To be fair, with characters like Astolfo and D'eon it does make sort of sense because the ingame mechanics treat them that way as well, such as the game giving 'genderless' characters two valentine return gifts, combined with the japanese language just having an easier time referring to characters in a non-gendered way. I just think it's autistic that the fanbase makes such a big deal about it cause the game is casual and jokey about it.

Well to clarify it isn't so much about whether it makes sense because that's a can of worms I won't open, but instead I mean that I'm a bit annoyed that they, the fans, took what was supposed to be a joke as some kind of statement on representation.
Say, I'm pretty sure Astolfo just likes to mess with people and not to be called non-binary or whatever. And like you said is just a joke, but the fans treat is as some kind of SJW statement which does bother me a little because you are walking on eggshells if you want to refer to Astolfo as "him".
EDIT: Also I got the gameplay thing wrong. I misremembered the wiki listing him as male. My mistake.
