I think that the good old days of yaoi fangirls going like "raep is smexy :3" never really left us. People just feel the need to jump thru hoops to justify finding raep smexy because they forgot the part where it's smexy because its goddamn anime characters who don't actually have feelings.
We need to retvrn.

Pretty much. I really do miss old fujoshis that weren't ashamed to admit to having weird fantasies and didn't try to justify every little thing. Nowadays they rag on their own guilty pleasures while pretending to be TIFs. Yes it was stupid, but goddammit was it fun watching them squabble over which fictional characters should bone. What can I say, times be a-changin' and sometimes I wish they didn't change so much :(

Can't 1/4 of Alan Moore's work be consider fan fiction?
Broadly yeah. A lot of people don't bother thinking of anything commercially published as fanfiction but Moore did write a bunch of stuff based off of existing works/mythos that weren't really intended to be "canon" to them. I mean yes by this definition Dante's Inferno is self-insert RPF Bible fic but honestly good for him. Good for him

That one comic that has, like, Dorothy and Alice and Wendy and the whole thing just reads like a long list of his rapey pedophilic lesbian jerk-off fantasies deserves a spot in this thread imo. It's not even the content that got me, I just thought it was fucking boring and way too obvious he wrote it with his dick in his hand.
Commercially published, mind you.
The Wikipedia plot summary kind of undersells it

Edit: Alan Moore's dick in his hand, not Dante's dick in his hand.

See also people who absolutely flip their lids over the really gross shit that corpsefluid writes while being totally fine with a fic where a character eats his boyfriend's guts. Like man, I don't like scat/piss/farting either, but I just don't read those fics, so it literally doesn't effect me that they exist. AO3 isn't gonna run out of server space anytime soon.
(Also I don't know if corpsefluid is still selling dildoes. She never mentioned closing her business [that I'm aware of] but she also hasn't posted about it since like... before covid lockdowns happened.)
I'm an equal opportunity critic. It doesn't really matter what the fetish is; if the fic overall is bad, it's bad. But most of the time it's solely due to the authors attitude. As said before, we all have our guilty pleasures, and there is some degenerate shit that might scratch that pre-nut itch, but the author has no qualms over what it is and does not pretend otherwise. It's the ones with the "discourse", like adybpt from the pro ship thread, that tend to be absolutely annoying. Fanfiction is not fanfiction but a political springboard for them. The gender shit in particular has grown, and there are a significant amount of enbies in fanfic. it's still a white woman thing but there are more Chinese users showing up.

(Still can't stop thinking about that one AC fic where Arno got a gun shoved up his ass. It was a smut fic, Chinese language too. Thanks google translate)
I absolutely refuse to read any fic with an opening author's note that says like "Don't read this if you don't support xyz". I don't give a shit if it's something I actually do support, and I don't give a shit if it's the best written fic in the world that's perfectly suited to my tastes. I'm hitting the back button
I hate perfectly written fics that either take a nosedive with the storytelling or make decisions that don't make sense. Then, if you point this out, you get blocked. See my example of pooner Shay and how the autistic historian openly declared "medical facts be damned." The ABO shit has to be the worst contender, because you have males with functional vaginas and the worst misogyny (not involving women) possible.
As someone else said, by the looks of it most badfic nowadays has evolved from typo-ridden messes to politics-stuffed schlock, hence all the CoD pooner shit. Also I was previously under the impression that said CoD pooner shit made it abundantly clear who has the pussy. Then I asked a friend about it who's apparently seen it happening and no, apparently it's often left untagged and hits you right in the face. Bo1/Bo3 Zombies enjoyers keep winning, have yet to see pooner Richthofen.
There are about 300-400 fics of Ghost and Soap being pooners, separately. They are as dumb and hilarious as you can expect. And not one, not a single one, has ever done their research. They've got Soap with open BPD or the worst autism entering the army when there are restrictions, and a fic where Ghost gets pregnant because he didn't think he would after PIV sex.

They might have been degenerates but they held down jobs and didn't show up on Twitter begging for money.

And I presume that 300-400 fics is among those that are tagged as such. Imagine how many remain untagged and then come seemingly out of nowhere to the average yaoi enjoyer, fucking rip. Moral of the story, stick to the classics and avoid the remakes for your best bet with avoiding pooners and/or troons. Of course even that's not foolproof as they're bound to worm in everywhere, but oh well.

The infamous Fire Emblem Guro fanfic series is now almost at 1 million words total:

And the newest entry is fucked, in terms of the description:

And is stuffing someone's corpse to make them into a doll a thing, when it comes to guro stories?

Skimming through the table of contents for the series, I'm surprised at how inventive the author is. Not many repeats of the same kind of death. It is really funny to me though that they feel the need to specifically point out which deaths are nonconseusal, like, you'd think that'd be the assumption. Wouldn't it only be neccessary to specifically point it out when the character in question is actively trying to die, since a reader wouldn't really expect that when clicking on a snuff fic? (Plus a lot of the "consensual" deaths seem to be suicides anyway. Why not just describe them as such?)

Wouldn't the correct term for those "consensual deaths" be either assisted suicide, mercy killing, or euthanasia?

While this fic isn't as horrible as most of the other fics posted here (even if it does feature the Troon R6 Siege operator, I think), this part of it gave me a chuckle:

So ripping Pride color undergarments is confirmed to be a warcrime, that's good information to know.

And this fic is just, I have no words, even with it's punny title:

I'm finding myself blindsided by decent fics that, out of nowhere, suddenly veer into a giant soapbox that has nothing to do with the story. We're about to burn down a drug lab, why are we suddenly having an entire lecture about different character's sexualities and how to tolerate and respect them?

Someone has shitted up my very niche, very small fandom with way too many "woke up in a female body (fondle fondle) after a brief illness" fics.

And there's another set of crossover fics where everyone is suddenly gay and madly in love with each other and have extremely romantic buttsecks everywhere. Obviously written by women who have zero idea how bitchy actual gay men can be.

A strange direction to explore as the original works were '80s Y/A space opera/ecology/commerce with slight romance but no hint of gender swapping or bathhouse in space tropes.

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I found this story in a 4chan thread. It has to be hands down one of the most horrifying things I've ever read. I understand it's fetishistic like all of the other work by that author, but it's legitimately unsettling.

Can you give a brief summery for the thread?

I skimmed it briefly, and apparently the chick becomes an Eldritch abomination blob of flesh with anatomy where they don't belong, but she and her fiancé fuck anyway.

Sure, but I should warn you that my summary won't do it justice. You really have to experience it yourself

So basically a man and his fiance are working on a portal machine. The woman gets sucked into the portal by accident. The man eventually manages to reopen the portal, and finds that the dimension on the other side was empty, except for a pink squishy material that goes on as far as he can see. From the material arise clones of his fiance, some not so much clones as arms and legs reaching towards him. As he steps closer the ground becomes a vast array of tongues, turns out a hundred years have passed for the fiance. Turns out she's been waiting.

I don't remember that part. Fucking hilarious though.

That does get to another point though, what counts as fanfiction, at least for this thread? You could plausibly say The Thirteenth Floor (or World on a Wire) are fanfictions for Simulacron-3, and the Koran is a Bible fanfiction, but most people don't. I'd say saying "Harry Potter is a D&D fan fiction" does not make sense, but where it gets interesting is that a lot of lower-end fiction is highly derivative, so for example Schooled in Magic is highly derivative of Harry Potter. That would generally imply that many so-called "Original Works" on AO3 are not very original at all, but are they fanfiction? It probably has to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Non horrible example

Breaking Bad / Invader Zim cross, played mostly deadpan.

Zim decides to weaken humanity by giving Walter white a 100% pure recipe. White is incredulous, because 100% purity should be impossible. Zim does not care.

This is set shortly after Gus cut Victor's throat to terrify Walt and Jesse.

I liked how competently written the story was. It reminded me of the Sopranos/Stargate cross where they didn't wink at the camera at all. Sadly, that Sopranos fic went off the rails hardcore.

I'd rate fanfiction as something that is 1) explicitly derivative and doesnt pretend not to be 2) the author doesnt intend for it to be canon to the source material. So Dante's Inferno is fanfiction, shitty Disney Star Wars movies are not (though the writing quality may fool you!)

However I think that for the purposes of this thread, original fiction on AO3 should be fair game. Hell, original fiction anywhere on the internet, as long as long as the author self-published it for free public access. That way it's similar in scope to fanfiction, even if it's not explicitly derivative of anything/derivative in any way besides the author just not being very creative. The point is that anybody can just go online anc click on it and read it in its entireity for free.

Somewhat related, but I've witnessed a phenomenon in at least one fandom I'm in wherein someone who self-publishes books on Amazon (usually "erotic novels") and will basically advertise them by swapping out the names of characters for the names of characters from a TV show and posting it (either part or the whole fucking thing) to AO3 under the tag for said TV show. I find that a lot more questionable in terms of whether or not it counts as fanfiction. Usually because the original character that they rechristened as the TV show character acts nothing like the TV show character and would be horribly OOC if they'd been originally written to be the TV show character...
I can see if I can track down an example of this, but I'm pretty sure this is actually against AO3's TOS (yes, AO3 has a TOS, it's mostly about not making profit from your derivative works) so it's possible that this author's stuff finally got taken down.

I think this is relevant as it clearly has overlap with the fanfiction/shipping community

Good to see an actor not feeding these horndogs. I understand a bit of fanservice here and there but there's a point where you need to politely but firmly tell people you're not comfortable with something or it's crossing a line. It's made better (worse?) by the fact that his character spent hundreds of years as a mind controlled slave being forced to seduce victims for a vampire master.
