Apple has shut down Facebook’s ability to distribute internal iOS apps, from early releases of the Facebook app to basic tools like a lunch menu. A person familiar with the situation tells The Verge that early versions of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other pre-release “dogfood” (beta) apps have stopped working, as have other employee apps, like one for transportation. Facebook is treating this as a critical problem internally, we’re told, as the affected apps simply don’t launch on employees’ phones anymore.

The shutdown comes in response to news that Facebook has been using Apple’s program for internal app distribution to track teenage customers with a “research” app.

That app, revealed yesterday by TechCrunch, was distributed outside of the App Store using Apple’s enterprise program, which allows developers to use special certificates to install more powerful apps onto iPhones. Those apps are only supposed to be used by a company’s employees, however, and Facebook had been distributing its tracking app to customers. Facebook later said it would shut down the app.

This poses a huge issue for Facebook. While Apple provides other tools a company can use to install apps internally, Apple’s enterprise program is the main solution for widely distributing internal apps and services. In an email, a Facebook spokesperson said “I can confirm that this affects our internal apps.”

In a statement given to Recode, Apple said that Facebook was in “clear breach of their agreement with Apple.” Any developer that breaches that agreement, Apple said, has their distribution certificates revoked, “which is what we did in this case to protect our users and their data.” Apple declined to comment on shutting down all of Facebook’s internal apps in an email to The Verge.

Revoking a certificate not only stops apps from being distributed on iOS, but it also stops apps from working. And because internal apps by the same organization or developer may be connected to a single certificate, it can lead to immense headaches like the one Facebook now finds itself in where a multitude of internal apps have been shut down.

Apple and Facebook have already been bickering over privacy, but this is the first instance of Apple taking an action that directly shuts down some of Facebook’s activities. Last March, Apple CEO Tim Cook criticized Facebook’s handling of the Cambridge Analytica data sharing scandal, saying, “I wouldn’t be in this situation” if he were running the company. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg later said the comments were “extremely glib” and spoke of Apple as a company that “work hard to charge you more.”

To be fair they did say they were banning fake news and few news is faker than natural healing and anti vax nonsense.

yeah, I'm not opposed to this. Free speech doesn't apply here. It's not the same to say "Hey, Trump's a moron" than "Vaccines cause autism". One's an opinion, the other is stated as a fact.

I guess we're gonna see a few conservabros complaining about this because they love pseudo-science, specially naturalist pseudo-science. It's often the libertarian type that tends to believe that everything industrialized is trying to insert nanospies in your body or some nonsense. Because obsessively trying the new extravagant healthy diet is soooo conservative.

I don't like them as much as the next folk but I think the slippery slope has proven itself to very real and very dangerous, and I think it's extremely foolish to turn a blind eye to the banning and silencing of anything that not clearly illegal, let alone cheering on censorship if it censors something you dislike or disagree with.

No sir, I don't like it. They're just giving these idiots more fuel to add to their persecution complex and not actually doing anything to combat their bad ideas. That's not to say that I have any faith in Facebook or public education to turn out careful thinkers but still.

I'm a libertarian and I'm completely for banning this. It goes against the party status quo, so sayeth the bright minds of Reddit. There's a huge difference between free speech and freedom to express your opinion, and selling harmful and false pseudoscience as fact. Like someone else said, saying you think Trump or Sanders is an idiot is your right to an opinion and shouldn't be taken down because some fag got butthurt. Saying things like vaccines cause autism and re.tards believing it will cause actual abuse and harm to their children and shouldn't be encouraged.

It's weird how Pro-Vax spergs throw a hissy fit and actually think censorship is totally fine, which if you do, will only make people believe Vaccines do cause Autism and people like you want to cover it up.

Maybe if you didn't make a big stink about it people would have just laughed at it and it wouldn't have been a big deal. Like seriously. Hypocrite. I don't give a shit if it's wrong it's still hypocritical. You know they will use the same excuse for Libertarian and Right Wing thought (It's obviously wrong so ban it!).

Remember, they made a “satire” tag so people wouldn’t look stupid for sharing joke articles.

I say it falls on the person to not be duped.
It's not daddy Facebook's job.

Until we develop a vaccine or cure for stupidity I think any measures taken to censor bad ideas are just ridiculous. Instead of blaming the idiots why don't we hold the education system accountable?

Or better yet, burn it to the fucking ground.

And this is why we're newfrens.

i love how the internet is getting a worse place for everyone, lets hope for a successful nasim this time when a normie has enough.

It sounds like Natural News was perfectly fine on Facebook, and all the scamming people with batshit insane antivax healing crystals was cool. but the "far right" (not wanting to transition children is far right now) stuff just took it too far.

I find it weird that NN is now aimed at both people who like homeopathy and organic food and are also right wing. I didn't think there was much overlap there, apparently I was mistaken.

It's the distrust of authority that does it, I think. They're right to be skeptical, but they have a hard time sorting the wheat from the chaff.

I'm not sure forcing fringe wackos underground will help things. As soon as you push something off a major platform like facebook twitter and google, then you've isolated it from the general population and allowed it to become more of an echochamber, possibly making them go even more extreme.

Lookit all the "I'm libertarian BUTs" coming out of the woodwork.

Better to stand up proudly for your fascist ideals than to try to pretend free speech stops applying if someone contradicts the majority.

You don't prove people wrong by trying to silence them, though you can squelch the willingness to speak out by constantly harassing anyone who doesn't agree with you.
