This always comes up in the anorexia threads - physicians in the US have limited power to force medical care onto competent adults, and the court system largely does not have the resources to deal with forcing every single ana-chan into wardship just to uselessly tube-feed them. Eugenia, Fit Vegan Ginger Anna, Ashley etc. are all legally adults who can and do refuse medical care. There's a duty to stabilize someone in an emergency situation, but after that? Get fucked. Doctors here aren't stewards of heath or any of that high-minded shit. It is purely a transactional business service. Pressing patients like Eugenia into accepting medical care they need but don't want drives them away, taking their sweet insurance dollars with them. Eugenia doesn't want a good doctor who will advocate for her best interest. She doesn't want to get better. Her mom doesn't want her to get better, either. They want someone who will pat their ass and slide them a blank Rx pad.

This is the same thing that enables doctor shopping by munchies and other illness fakers. The fakers shop around until they find a doctor burnt out, disinterested, and/or amoral enough to just do whatever they ask for in exchange for the ability to send hugely-inflated medical bills to the patients' insurance company.

Getting somebody declared mentally incompetent is really fucking hard if they don't have some obvious brain damage or chromosomal disorder or something. Anorexics fall into an uncomfortable gap where they're a combination of adults with the ability to withdraw consent and also intentionally killing themselves. Starvation isn't a medical emergency like a heart attack is, either, so there's no legal obligation to save them.

Eugenia and her mom are both in on this weird abuse starvation exhibition. There's really nothing anyone can do about it. Maybe there will be a child abuse investigation after she dies or something.

She's an adult plus let's say she magically decided she wanted to start recovery today, she's done so much damage to her organs, her life would still be very short and uncomfortable. At this point, her body has most likely already started eating her brain, heart, and muscles.

The old blog called ''Medusa'' (it's gone now) was about women with end stage Anorexia. I remember reading some of the cases about women, Eugenia's age or a bit older that could NOT recover because of the organ damage. They were terminal, there was no going back. This is just the reality. Eugenia had a window of time to get help and to prevent organ damage, that window of time is gone now. If she would have gotten help in her teens there might of been some hope.

Yes, but the consensus was Eugenia wouldnt survive refeeding. When done properly, refeeding syndrome can be avoided. It is complicated but studies show phosphate plays a huge part in it and refeeding has to be done very slowly at first with labs drawn frequently. Basically the electrolyte imbalance can spike glucose, blood pressure and sodium to high levels upon refeeding. Clinics like Denver Acute are equipped to handle this.

But yeah, Eugenia wouldn't have a normal life expectancy.
