Assuming something similar to these events did indeed occur, I think that perhaps what happened was that May and her mother went to the hospital and May lost her nerve. The trauma of it all was too much, she didn't want to go through the pain of a trial, she didn't want to give evidence. She probably regrets not going ahead with this, and either misremembers or lies to try and explain why she didn't press ahead.

May is dumb but there would be no dramatic trial. If they found his DNA in her butt, and did basic investigation, he would have taken the first plea deal offered.
