May is dumb but there would be no dramatic trial. If they found his DNA in her butt, and did basic investigation, he would have taken the first plea deal offered.Assuming something similar to these events did indeed occur, I think that perhaps what happened was that May and her mother went to the hospital and May lost her nerve. The trauma of it all was too much, she didn't want to go through the pain of a trial, she didn't want to give evidence. She probably regrets not going ahead with this, and either misremembers or lies to try and explain why she didn't press ahead.
The hospital would have never just let a minor rape victim waltz out of the hospital and not followed up repeatedly. A woman panicking or losing her nerve is not uncommon and the protocols actually take this into account, it’s baked into how they deal with a rape victim from the first contact.
I can believe Jolene drove her to the hospital, they saw a crowded waiting room and May then demanded to immediately leave. Her mom not wanting to further upset her distraught daughter complied. Then maybe May decided to blame Jolene for her losing her nerve. Ralph loves to makes others responsible for bad or regretted decisions, maybe May is the same.
I don’t believe she reported a rape to any medical professional at the hospital. May must have been adamant about not contacting the police too. Contacting the police would have been immediately done by the hospital staff if she told them she had been raped.
The above is giving May the benefit of the doubt. May told people Ralph raped her, she told Ralph an uncle molested her, a Turk has raped her and then the whole mess with the schizo guy. This puts her in the unreliable narrator category, but doesn’t mean she wasn’t raped by some dirtbag at her high school.
I actually do believe something bad happened on her date with the guy, but everything that happened afterwards has been through the spin, trauma and cope machine of May’s mind. Now the narrative details change depending on the audience, whether it’s to make Jolene look bad, herself a more pure, innocent victim, the turk more like a super predator, etc… It also has the weird vibe of a dramatic origin story for a white nationalist woman.
