Three, they have to not pay. Four, you have to go through the admin hoops (whatever paperwork/ meetings/ calls/etc. your state requires. Five, there has to be a request to the passport authorities to ding it.

Some of those may happen simultaneously or automatically (it's state-managed, so ymmv), and some may not. But the long and short is - it's not an automatic process. It requires someone to push forward. And idk what each state requires in terms of process or time or filings (again, likely varies), but anyone thinking this is an immediate or guaranteed outcome is just wrong. It is unfortunately not that easy to avail one's children of the supposed protections and assurances of court-ordered child support.

Eta: and as @Balldo's Gate noted, none of this happens without court-ordered child support in the first place. Until then, it's just hypothetical, which is to say - non-existent and irrelevant in the real world. Which is why turds like Ralph hook up with wimps like Meigh in the first place.

He has court ordered support in CA and probably will have another soon in NY unless May is totally retarded. If he falls behind in support payments it's not difficult to have the state dept flag his passport, but it does take some paper pushing. Most people don't bother because the average dead beat doesn't try to flee the country, but for the guys prone to it getting the passport dinged is a top priority. Given we are dealing with Vickers and Harry who knows Ralph needs to live in the third world, because he's poor and has shit credit, they would certainly make dinging his passport a top priority for Ralphamale if he failed to pay.

The whole purpose is to make sure he doesn't miss payments, or fall behind, and at this point I'd say it will work. Maybe Ralph can do the big boy math to figure out if $1600 a month is worth permanent exile. I don't think Ralph really wants to live in Mexico the rest of his days, regardless of what he says, and he def wants to be able to travel back to the states at will so he will probably be a gud boy and make his court ordered payments.

I commented a few weeks/months ago on back-of-the-envelope estimates based on the NY and CA calculators, used what Ethan has claimed to make (I knocked off about 20-25%), plugged in a low wage for the ladies, and made extremely conservative (zero) estimates of other assets (at least one of them asked fairly detailed questions, but in both I just went with what was most favorable to Ralph).

In both states I got more like $1600-$1700 per child, not together (though idr if I put in anything about healthcare insurance, which typically takes a bite/is factored in (in my state it factors into the base calculator dollar-for-dollar if the support-paying spouse covers healthcare insurance)). I think I did the Xander one when Ralph and Meigh were living together, so numbers could be impacted if Ralph no longer lives with Rozy, but that could cut both ways.

In any case, this is why I say Xander's getting robbed, though $800 agreed and paid is often better than an order for $1600 that a sumbitch refuses to pay, so it was probably hoped at the time to be worth agreeing to if it stopped the nonsense. (It didn't.)

Oh, I totally agree, it would take many months for Ralph to get his passport flagged. I guess just the looming threat that if he decides to stop making payments to Xander that the Vickers will be immediately on the stick to get the court order will keep him in line, which is the point.
