I think it's high time we create a separate thread just to throw in the unrelenting wave of articles, pushing for people to eat the bugs.

In the last few couple months, we've had articles like these:

You WILL eat ze bugs, goy.

The EU just decided that companies can include powdered cricket in food products, the third insect powder that is allowed in the EU now.

We're going to see an explosion of insect and shellfish allergies because of this.

I really thought people freaking out that this was some kind of humiliation ritual were just being crazy but now I'm not so sure. One of the things that makes me think maybe you're right is that boomers and older gen Xers remember the adoption of sushi as an acceptable food in North America. Most people over a certain age will never accept a radically new food. There's always a small group of neophilic weirdos who will be trying new stuff in their 90s but the normal human pattern is to get fixed as to what is acceptable food quite early in life and for that to not change. And everyone my age and older has actual memories of this happening with sushi, so the idea that bugs will somehow become acceptable? And pushing bugs isn't psychological warfare? I might be convinced.

I mean yeah, any edible insects or food made with insects should have shellfish allergy warnings since insects can trigger those allergies (presumably because insects and crustaceans are both arthropods, and sister groups iirc).

I put sea bugs aka frozen shrimp in my noodles today, shit was cash. Still eating dried mealworms sometimes too. Arthropods are edible and delicious (unless you have an allergy obvs)

I still think that "eat the bugs" is a psy op to make vegetarianism more acceptable.
You will eat the plants and you will be happy, cause meat will become prohibitively expensive for most people. Cause the ruling classes want to keep their money, power and level of consumption, so they will do what they always do: offset it onto the average Joe. Remember the carbon footprint? It was popularized by oil companies, they are the biggest polluters, but you are the one who's at fault, normie, and you will have to pay the price.
Also, AI will probably take over hundreds of millions of jobs in the next several decades, so a lot of people will have to rely on UBI, and I doubt that it'll be high enough to let them consume meat and dairy on a regular basis.

And watch as Luddism takes off when regular people are unable to make a decent living thanks to robots. Hell, might even make a religion out of it. Or simply retool pre-existing religions to turn against robots.

You ate sushi and fermented soy in the 80s because you were or wanted to appear cultured, smart, exotic, etc.

Can't say that about huffing cricket powder or sitting down to a nice big bowl of fresh crickets. You eat those because you do as you're told and don't want any trouble.

It’s so weird. They hate the rural people and they are really trying to get rid of them…

But living on the fringes of this dystopia seems nicer than in the bughive, even if you have to keep a couple cows and chickens going, and the internet sucks.

I’d rather have prime rib and no dragon dildos than the opposite.

That's not weird at all, they hate rural people precisely because they live outside of their influence (at least to some degree). They want everyone to be completely at their mercy. No sane person would choose to eat bugs or fake meat instead of steak, so the choice must be taken away.

What about rural people who eat bugs? Like in most countries close to the equator at least seasonally.

You can try and bullshit other people saying that shrimp are bugs, but I can cook and eat a bag of of 'em for dinner and feel fine. That female journo that shoved a bunch of roaches in her mouth while trying to shill them nearly died throwing up.

Why don't Billy Gates and his butt buddies and the whole WEF circlejerk sit down in front of a few cameras (live) and eat a couple plates of bugs --each, and only for the benefit of us plebs, of course!-- to witness just how cool it is?

The difference, as several people have pointed out in the thread and elsewhere, is the meat. Prawns and other a edible crustaceans (which are generally decapods) have a large, fleshy muscles, which is usually the only part of the creature we consume. With insects (generally hexapods), the entire creature is eaten, with most of the consumed material being the chitinous exoskeleton. That chitinous exoskeleton is where all the problems lie, because while it is high in protein and some nutrients, it is also extremely difficult for the body to process; a significant amount of the proteins it contains are toxic or allergenic. Regular exposure to insect chitin almost inevitably causes some form of allergic reaction on a long enough timescale.

Bugs are what I feed to the chickens, they love them, and I enjoy their delicious eggs. Why upset a fine partnership?

I mean, it would make more sense to cultivate bugs as food for livestock rather than direct human food. Little backyard or rooftop chicken runs could increase urban food resiliency in the face of supply chain shocks.

You can feed chickens weeds, kitchen scraps and bugs to supplement their grain, they love it.

You can compost the chicken manure for backyard or community gardens. It really could be beneficial if applied correctly. But where’s the humiliation there, I suppose?
