So I am to infer from this that Sony will never go back to E3. How badly does it have to go for E3 for them to decide to overhaul what has otherwise been a somewhat successful format for years? I know E3 has been the best example of Companies lying to consumers with fake scenes and vertical slices of games, but this is beyond pathetic.

It will be a shame if E3 dies. Even when it's shit, it's still fun to laugh at along with your internet buds.

E3 is pretty much dead, PAX is following suit, and Gamescom shortly after. Soon the only expo that will put out any relevant info on vidya (instead of just buzzwords) will be TGS, but with Sony setting up shop in California I feel there will only be so much time til that gets hijacked too.

Hey you take that back! Nintendo is not autistic, and they are SO ahead of the ga-

To give them some credit, they're smart enough to know their original blue ocean audience is long gone so they don't bother showcasing this stuff alongside their main repertoire, instead giving more casual products like this their own segment completely separate from everything else. They did the same thing with the overpriced cardboard kits otherwise known as Labo.

From laughing at awkward presentations to cringing at a bunch a of hipsters that are offended by titty jiggle physics.

Might as well just stick with the Tokyo Game Show for gaming stuff.

I'm glad obama gave iran money because I'm going to steal the nuke their making so I can do the needful.

The only thing that can save california is radiation.

California being Sony's Playstation base of operations isn't anything new. During the PS1 and PS2 era they had regional control for North America, when the PS3 hit that changed and everything centered around Japan. The PS3 fucked up so they turned to the Americans to save it. After the PS3 was saved they had the American branch become the (informal) main Playstation HQ and design the PS4 and the upcoming PS5.

They only just made things officially official a few years ago. This ontop of the Success of God of War and Spiderman has made them beef up their western devs where as both Microsoft and Nintendo really don't have western devs inhouse with that much support. Nintendo used to have Rare but they got rid of it and never replaced it.

Sony just purchased Insomniac games and is apparently still looking to tie down both Crash and Spyro for exclusivity for the PS4 and PS5.

On the Japanese end they've really helped Capcom promote monster hunter and none of their policies have effected Monhun, Catherine, or the upcoming Persona 5 Royal. They have not lost Japanese support at all. Sega even has Sakura Wars being a PS4 exclusive.

There's Retro, who's about as close to an equivalent you can get. But then they kinda just, stopped the past half decade (allegedly there was a lot of internal conflict going on but I don't exactly remember what was supposedly said to have happened). Last thing they put out was Tropical Freeze and after that it's been radio silence aside from its Switch port until out of nowhere Nintendo announced Prime 4 is being completely overhauled and handed to Retro, which really brings into question what the hell's been going on with them all this time.

They tried splitting it in half with one convention for industry people (E3 Business and Media Summit) and another for fans (Entertainment for All).

ah, thx. remember reading about it back then when I was still getting stuff on paper

can't speak for the "gamer" audience but shit's just boring these days. e3 was only fun for the cringe and the announcements teasers (if you were into that), pax was supposed to be the laidback grassroots expo, less corporate and more fun allowed but that kinda got lost starting with the whole dickwolves debacle. gamescom always was just "ah right, there's something in europe". even the "big" announcements they said they'd be doing the last few years were kinda eh and even less worthy going there when you can just wait for news-blurb.
otoh I can also understand corps not wanting to spend big money on some booths for a few days when people mostly watch that shit online and there's not really a need to network that much at a specific date anymore.

TGS at least has some effort and heart put in, but that's a just a reflection of the nip market giving more of a fuck what they produce and who their customers are. same way western conventions reflect the western industry.

I recommend making a TGS thread for 2020 so certain people like me can remember it's happening
Make one super thread for all of the trade shows. TGS, GamesCom, and anything that tries to replace E3.

Watching PAX become what it is now was just a sad experience

Even TGS is largely irrelevant. At lot of what they show is Japan only and thus will only be released in Land of the Rising Sun to the tune of 10k copies sold, while all the internationally released stuff gets revealed or showcased at another expo anyway, making the show redundant.

well, it's good if you like nip stuff, and even if you only get the games as import or years later it can still be enjoyable to watch since there's at least some passion involved.
AAA ofc get marketed globally at some point, so there's no reason to go to e3 or else for that anymore, and almost all of it is completely corporate anyway. I mean look at stuff like the VGAs (which the pope desperately tries to make the vidya oscars) or the pc game show which could be a great indy/crossplat promotion on a smaller, more chill scale but even that is a simple PR + trailer show; the best parts were stuff like the shaking unravel man or even sean murray rusing people, not youtube-playlists with fresh videos intermixed narrating press statements.
one problem is on one hand the western industry wants to push games as kind of an artform, celebrating the people involved etc when companies went the complete opposite with commitee-designed focus tested development, which then means they can't market it via the people involved. I couldn't care less what a woke numale writer shat out trying to "redefine" an established IP, and everything else is 110% planned marketing following a strict strategy etc, there's no middle ground.
for an entertainment medium that's supposed to be "fun" there is hilariously very little fun allowed.
