I have a general rule that works really well for avoiding bad games: If it's from Japan and it's made after the year 2000, don't buy it.
The only RPGs that are worth buying today come directly from the U.S or from European developers. These development companies have dominated the market on story-driven role playing games for over a quarter of a century now. Wasteland 2 and 3, The Dragon Age series, The Witcher series, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Baldur's Gate 3, Pillars of Eternity 1/2, The Metro series, Cyberpunk 2077, we even have underdogs rolling in on shoestring budgets that blow a lot of Japanese releases out of the water like Sea of Stars, Kingdoms of the Dump or Death Trash. All of these games despite whatever flaws on release eventually get patched and they are fantastic games you will remember forever.
Japanese companies, however, have been churning out the same boring shit, weirdly with the exact same font (?), poorly translated and poorly optimized since 2002 and it has almost always never been worth your money or purchase. It's Japslop for people who want to masturbate to cat-girls and follow convoluted narratives that lack cohesion and common sense, always ending with "And with the power of friendship and love, we can win." It's all shit, all of it.
