The stuff I'm hearing about 12 makes me think they're just going to redo the story to 5 and just make the party less silly.

Because there's probably going to be romance options in this one.

That and 5's plot was pretty basic so you can rework shit to keep it fresh, but they're probably going to have a Great Sabercat as a party member and an amazon warrior lady so the westerners become more familiar with the Dragon Quest series staples of reoccurring things.

We've already had gay bois so that's not really an issue at this point.
 
I played the demo of XI and I’m conflicted. I hate JRPGs from a gameplay perspective, but I can almost get into DQ. Is there something that you’d say sets it apart from other JRPGS? I really want to like it, but the gameplay is really unappealing.

It’s the problem I have with JRPGs and older RPGs in general. I think turn-based combat by itself is tedious and boring. Most turn-based games I play or enjoy are more tactical, usually requiring more flanking and terrain. I think what I’m trying to communicate is that I get the appeal of DQ except in gameplay. I feel like I’m missing something that makes that part enjoyable.
 
I think I want to replay Dragon Quest VII again. It's the best JRPG that is the seventh in its series by a mile.

Nobody cares for this game enough to get coherent references...

Dragon Quest being a relatively unchanging JRPG is largely its appeal. You picked quite possibly the worst series according to your tastes.

Turn-based combat is like a comfort food. It involves a lot of very repetitive battles and light resource management, and enjoying having your characters slowly grow over time. If it doesn't click with you already, it won't click with you if you try to force it. Maybe try again in a few years?

Yeah seriously. It's the reason I love it more than any other series. It hasn't betrayed me. It knows what its fans like and it does it well.

I have 7 on PS1 when it was called Dragon Warrior and the newer 3DS release. I'm unsure which one I like best.

7 takes forever to get started in the PS1 version but it's very much a time capsule of the era. So you get more involved with the original feeling of when the game was made. The 3ds version gets going quicker but it lacks some things that the original had.

It hasn't betrayed me.
I take you have not played 9 or 10.

They have changed stuff throughout the series though. Battles go by quicker and you have more options for party builds.

Also when the series came out, the first game had zero side content. So you had to grind or else you would be too low a level.

Bravely Default kind of breaks this trend...By having your team wiped just by doing anything.
 
Just finished the main portion of DQ11 and I really don't know what to say honestly. I don't feel like my time was wasted but I have absolutely 0 interest in doing anything regarding the post game. Some thoughts

  • Side quests were absolute shit. Just basic fetch quests and I'm angrier at myself for doing them.
  • Supporting cast was great. I only mildly disliked Jade and I want to commission degenerate artwork of Serena.
  • I actually wasn't that bothered by the more 'japanese' quirks of the game. I dropped Tales Berseria and I can't go back to FF10 because a lot of the jap cringe.
  • I didn't touch Tokkington at all. That shit was a slog
My big issue though, and something I have to question about all JRPGs of the modern age, is the combat system. I'm happy they went with a system like FF10, where characters get their own turn instead of like previous DQ games where you had to set all the actions at once. My problem though is that 90% of the battles I just had autobattle to set. What's the point of playing the game when I don't actually get to 'play' it? I dropped FF12 over this same issue but surprisingly DQ11 kept me engaged. Probably because it's the only DQ that I spent more than 3 hours with.

Well, we're already at the point where people want easier gameplay and in some cases, skip it entirely. Which means that an RTS that'll run you for most of your day off will be condensed into...


But Dragon Quest 4 and 5 wasn't really that hard for me on the DS. Sure, I had to grind every now and then and figure out where to go next. But it was easy, all things considered.

If you want a challenge, Bravely Default is good for that... Except for the final boss, for some reason. Just don't except much from the story.

The issue isn't difficulty, the issue is engagement. I though DQ11's bosses to be a good difficulty, if a little repeptitive. The problem I has is if I can just set something to auto and walk away then I think it's a shit game honestly. I'm here to play the game, not watch it.

Dragon Age Origins and other WRPGs do this so much better. When I play those games I have to actually sit there and manage the battles. Even smaller engagements have difficulty.
