11 S sold pretty badly on the switch, especially since it needed a shitload of work to port over and pretty much took the development time of a real game to finish. It was a heavily promoted game too. In comparison Final Fantasy 7 remake was promoted around a similar timeframe and sold way more. This was also reinforced when 11 S made it to other platforms and had somewhat better sales, however many people were turned off to it being called the definitive edition when on the PC and PS4 the downgrade was noticeable. So OG 11 still wound up beating the S version in the end.

It's the entire reason why the west didn't get the Switch ports of 1-3 in physical format was due to 11's poor sales on the switch and why both of the Dragon Quest builders games had very low print runs on the switch as well.
Sounds like bullshit to me.

Kinda sucks but oh well. It'll be a while before we see another DQ 8/9 level success in the west again.

I just want a fixed DQ4 with party talk implemented. Is the mobile edition really gonna be the best way? I tried looking for info on possible hacks for implementing party talk to the DS version but it's like people just abandoned the project due to being insanely tedious/difficult.

And the mobile version currently has a gamebreaking bug where it crashes if you use Torneko's appraise skill. ffs.

Good thing DQ7-8 3DS versions are easily emulatable and I would have bought physical copies but the fucking price has skyrocketed in the last few months.

Mind you in japan they got free copies of the trilogy if they beat 11. That didn't happen in any of the western versions.

However in total DQ 11 outdid both 8 and 9 in the west. So I mean atleast the series is holding on and gaining some ground. It's not on par with how Monster Hunter went from nitche to massive global success. But I think it just needs to be given time.

The problem is with dragon quest is that it kinda targets the nostalgia of earlier games, but it never got popular in America. So it's not part of the whole Zelda and Mario group that monopolizes the 8 and 16 bit eras. Final Fantasy's main driving force really started at 7 when 3d was just getting started and the earlier games are kind of like how the earlier Elder Scrolls are remembered. Like people may like Daggerfall to some limited extent, but Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim's popularity dwarf it by a major extent.

It's Marissa Moira, the regular bullshitter and biggest Sony fanboy of the forum. Take anything he said with a big grain of salt.
I said bullshit as in "man this series keeps missing out on good shit because noone wants to buy it".
Step down white boy, you're out of your realm.

There's many things you can fuck around life with, But Dragon Quest isn't one of them.
man i can't wait for them to give DQ another massive push, agaain.

Dragon Quest 11 S did sold at least a total of 630k physical copies in Japan (545k in September 2020 for the initial release & 82k in March 2021 for the New Price edition which is the base game + all the cosmetic DLCs and voice drama set bundled together) which is pretty damn impressive for a re-release of a game. There was also a 3DS version of the OG game that stayed japanese-exclusive and was actually the best-selling one over there.

It wasn't a flop by any means even if it took time for the game to appear on the handheld as an enhanced port.

Hence why I did say you should take anything he claims with a big grain of salt.

Square was banking on Final Fantasy 7 Remake numbers for it though since it took similar amounts of time to make and cost. If DQ 11 was a budget release like Trials of Mana pulling under 3-5 million is fine. But it's big budget AAA release it can't pull numbers like that. To put it in further perspective, Final Fantasy 15 sold nearly 9 million copies and that's a bad game. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a game that was considered poorly performing by Square and that did similar numbers to DQ. Going Japan Only doesn't make a series sucessful you need to look at Western Numbers because the majority of Square's playerbase for everything else is western. If Fucking America and Europe drove the resurrection of the Mana series, there is zero reason why Square would expect an exception for DQ.

The 3ds version was not released in America on the 3ds but 11 S contains all the 3ds content.

No it doesn't. Much like how it is missing the Crossbow sub-quest(and all of its really nice prizes) from the PS4 original, it is also missing the Tockle Dungeon minigame from the 3DS version, which was what was used to unlock the Pastwords in that version(Though while the crossbow quest missing had no excuse, the Tockle dungeon used the 3DS-only Streetpass to even function)

One thing I've grown to appreciate about Dragon Quest is how it handles its emotional scenes. Most JRPGs, even ones I like such as Final Fantasy, tend to get really melodramatic during the emotional moments, but DQ is remarkable in that it's usually more understated yet powerful at the same time.

My personal favorite moment is from VIII when you help the King of Ascantha. The King has been mourning the loss of his wife for years, so you show him a vision of the past when she was alive. It's a touching, beautiful moment but it's also quiet. The King is certainly emotional, but it doesn't give way to sobbing, nor is the music blatant "YOU SHOULD FEEL SAD" music. And yet, I'd argue that makes the scene so much more powerful.

There are other moments too, like reuniting the dead lovers' souls in III and meeting Rab for real in XI. Dragon Quest has a better grasp at tugging at my heartstrings than most video games, even games that are deliberately trying to be sad.

I rather play the GBC ports of Dragon Quest 1-3 on my modded 3DS along having the DS and 3DS Dragon Quest games than the lazy mobile ports. I loved III on the GBC and the switch port looks doesn't excite me.
I tried out Dragon Quest I GBC recently and was pleasantly surprised, it has some nice QoL improvements over the NES version. Like not having to open your menu and select "Stairs" in order to not just walk over them.

Look at this goofy-ass box though:

DQ11 for the 3DS is pretty amazing in terms of depth.

Tickington keeps the style of each previous DQ instead of converting them all into 8bit.

Also still bummed we never got DQX in the West :(

It's going to be about the theme park event opening up and the new expansions to the mobile game.

Crossbow quest rewards are still in the game files but you're going to have to hex edit them in. I forgot about the streetpass dungeon though.

The crossbow supposedly had complaints that it resembled a gun too much with how the character holds it and fires it, so it suggests that it was a late term removal.

I mean usually you hold a gun and crossbow with two hands regardless. But the MC whips it out and shoots it like a pistol in a movie.

Dragon Quest XII has been announced, with the subtitle The Flames of Fate. Yuji Horii's saying it's gonna be more of a "Dragon Quest for adults." No real articles at the moment, but it's been confirmed largely through Twitter.

Also III's getting an HD remake. None of that mobile shit, we're talking from the ground up remade into high definition by the same people who did Octopath Traveler.
