The only game I still didn’t know what to make of is DQ7 because it’s such a rabbit hole. There are 3 versions and each have thier highs and lows.
From what I understand Reimagine is led by a guy who never finished the tutorial of the OG which really speaks for itself .
I've played all 3.

VII PSX - has a very simple but straightforward English translation and the pixel art is timeless. Much slower paced, especially in the beginning, but I think it fits the game well.

VII 3DS - modern DQ localization. Little censorship or alteration of costumes. Changed the vocation system to where only the basic vocation skills are permanently unlocked. Has a few major glitches that you'll want to keep an eye out for as they'll completely softlock your game.

VII Reimagined - modern DQ localization but amped up to 11 (even as a DQ localization defender, I found it too much at various points). Character costumes (especially for one character) have been altered for modern sensibilities. The vocation system has been reworked to be more like an FF job system. Multiple side story threads are outright gone. Monster selection has been reworked and a lot of monsters that had unique sprites/models are now genericized. If you find DQ7 intimidating because of length, this is the version to play but otherwise I can't recommend it.

tbh I'd say just play the PS1 version on an emulator. Maybe grab the strategy guide from internet archive as there are some hard stops that'll slow you down unless you specifically know the trick.

I am honestly shocked, I was considering the 3DS version because I thought it is the middle ground between PlayStation and the demake. I thought there was no way for glitches to be here but here we are.
I really appreciate your insight. I was hesitant to play the Playstation version because it’s one of those “buy the guide, goy” but I will just download it.
Btw I take it there’s no mod - such as cutting down loading time or such - for the PSX version, correct?

It does not have significant load times.

I don't think it really needs a guide, the game takes place of a series of small vignettes so its not hard to know what to do next. You do need to check everywhere for shards but just make it part of your exploring. If you get stuck a few hours in there's a witch that tells you where to find missing shards or you could reference a list.

I'm not up to date on the mods for VII PSX, but you shouldn't really need anything for the load times. It's low-res pixel graphics with a pretty spartan selection of samples for the music. I think the game might load almost all of the assets for an area when you enter because there's not a noticeable delay getting into or out of battles.

The 3DS version also has an unfixed memory leak in the core game loop which causes the game to lag like crazy after a few hours and even crash.

Looking at the fanarts … yes now I remember why he looked familiar
He looks like Nanashi from Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse
Shit, i kinda see it too. The way the spiky hair looks is kind of different, since Nanashi's was more slanted to the left.
On one hand, this is quite concerning because it gave me Metriod 4 Prime vibe and you know how that ended up.
On the other hand, I don’t mind waiting. I started looking into DQ last January and I am basically this:
I ain't worried about it. I don't know exactly what happened with Prime 4, but i trust that Horii and his team won't fuck up and make a shitty game.
Honestly, I don't there's really a DQ game you can really call bad. At least for the mainline games.

I dunno man, I get the sense that Horii has kinda checked out. DQ12 is also being developed by Hexadrive who were the ones who made Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, so I'm feeling very iffy about its prospects.

Is this only in the localized version? I beat the JP version because I assumed it would never be released in English and never ran into this. I only put a few hours into it in English because the localization drove me nuts (and the menu lag without L2 cache forced on with a new 3ds was atrocious).

Why would you need a mod to cut loading times? That's basic shit in the settings of any emulator.

How can anyone have faith in XII being a fun game? It's going to have pink bubbles again, to guide you to the next plot point, maybe something even worse like a QuestHelper-esque arrow. There will be mandatory perfectly detailed maps that only turn off when you want to take a gay screenshot. You will either get fully healed after every battle or get showered in herbs and magic water. Stealing will be a 100% chance and it will rain armor and weapons in treasure chests explicitly marked on the ever-present map; consequently inns and shops have disappeared and gold is useless. There are only 10 new monsters, each with 12 palette swaps. All monsters will have their lips removed, not just the trolls, because fat lips are racist; consequently a Lipsy is now called an Ipsy. There won't be a casino because of CERO gambling retardation.

At least we're sure to have tons of costumes to play Barbie dressup! Yay! Don't forget to preorder for your level 99 boost with exclusive Liquid Metal Armour set for only $29.99! And a seperate pack of stat boost seeds for only $4.99 a dozen!

Faith no but I'm open to being surprised. Maybe they'll fix the gay localizations.

But I'm very content with the 8 mainline games I do like and nothing else, that's plenty.
