Now that I think about it, they could even do a combination of Builders 3 and Monsters. Start off as a slime and recruit other monsters who build with other materials, go into dungeons to collect schematics, etc.

Honestly, the more that I think about it, the more that I really hope they do something like this. This sounds like it'd be a lot of fun.

AI translations are already rolling out. Not every franchise is going to get them (DQ is unlikely because Squeenix has their own in-house fulltime localizers, marketers, and PR people) but there's just not that many localizers in the industry which means that a lot of lower budget games are moving towards machine translation with an editing pass by a contractor who speaks English natively.

As for difficulty, the Japanese are having their own civil war about this. There's even more extreme positions over there like, "we should just get rid of all the hidden items entirely because I don't like missing things" so I would expect the dumbing down to potentially get way worse.

Any opinions on the best Dragon Quest to start with between 1/2/3? And on which version to play? I can go with the HD remakes if they’re significantly better but I won’t turn down one of the originals either.
If you've never played Dragon Quest, then III HD2D is probably the best place to start. It's not too hard, the adventure is decently long, and the vocation system gives you a lot of flexibility to build a party how you want. III is also the first game chronologically in the Loto/Erdrick trilogy and it's very apparent that they've tweaked the HD2D remakes in such a way that they want you to play III first.

Alternatively, I think II HD2D has a really satisfying story and the characters are a lot of fun.

I HD2D is a novelty. I like it a lot as an oldfag who first played DQ1 like 26 years ago but it's not really a cohesive satisfying experience. It's also very punishing because of the action economy (you're only a single character in DQ1 but the remake has you fighting full parties of enemies).

As for remakes vs originals... I and II remake are better than their originals (especially II which a lot of people consider to be incomplete in its OG releases). III remake is up in the air - you get better graphics, more cinematic presentation, and a lot of extra content but some people don't like the way the game is balanced and the localization is divisive. I'm not a super autist when it comes to DQ localization as the games are firmly tongue-in-cheek even in their original language, but some people (especially non-native English speakers) find the accents and inserted puns frustrating to deal with.

Anniversary stream was all merch. Some talking early on about Horii's memories. He has a comic autobiography that looks like it was done by Toriyama and the guy that took over for him doing DBS and a book on how Dragon Quest was made, a behind the scenes thing.

They announced DQX is getting an all in one box, but it's still a MMORPG. This latest expansion is the last, the game is now in maintenance mode like FF11.

DQXI is getting another port, this time to Switch 2 on one of Nintendo's super shitty Game Key Cards. No new content and the graphics don't look much better.

10 minute video coming in ~15 minutes. That will probably be the DQ12 reveal.

DQ12 revealed. They scrapped the initial dark and edgy theme and came up with a new title - Flames of Fate is now Beyond Dreams. Apparently development was completely restarted so the wait is going to be quite long still.

Also new Dragon Quest Monsters.

Also I guess no Dragon Quest X for us westoids ever now that the game is winding down. This shit sucks.

EDIT: Protag for XII

He looks... off. Maybe this is some Japanese aesthetic trend I'm just completely not up on.

I'm not gonna lie, I feel like alot of people are overreacting to what was shown. How exactly do we know they completely did away with the darker story? I feel like we should wait for more details about the story.

Also i think the hero looks fine. IDK what people are meaning when they say he doesn't look like a Toriyama character as if shit like Sand Land does'nt have characters that he made like this.

his hairstyle is weird but it doesn't look so weird when he's in his lizard form.

I don't hate it but honestly I really wish they leaned into the "tired" look of the MC more. Give him baggier eyes, mess his hair up more, make him more disheveled. It'd be more in line with the game being about dreams more if the MC was sleep-deprived.

I thought the enviroments in the DQXII trailer looked great, basically just XI but on steroids. I've gotta agree with the people who don't like the new MC design though, the haircut especially just seemed kinda "Cringe" for lack of a better term.

Personally I was more enthusiastic about the new Dragon Quest Monsters. V is my second favourite game in the series so getting to play as Bianca and Nera again should be a treat.

I wonder why they'd announce a new monsters game since dark prince only came out a few years ago. I thought people liked it.

Where is Deborah? is she safe? is she alright?

DQM1 had a character from DQ...6?'s sister get kidnapped and he followed her to rescue her by beating the Elite 4 and becoming Pokemon League Champion or something... Only it turns out that she was doing the same damned thing and the last storyline fight was against her.

I guess what I'm saying is when Deborah is revealed to be your rival or the final boss of this new DQM game, lets all pretend to be surprised while suppressing a smile, k?

40 year jubilee and all you get is a 10 minute boomer commercial with some scrapheap game and bullshit spinoff announcement with no real info lol

Has anyone finished the Dark Prince DQM? I played the demo and picked up the game on sale, but it’s just been sitting on my shelf. It didn’t really feel like a DQM game, so I haven’t really had any drive to pick it back up.

Deborah better at least make a cameo, if not a playable character in the new game. Maybe they could make it an option to convince her to join you. I hope we also get Gema/Ladja. He’s still my favorite antagonist in the series.

The new hero definitely looks off. Was he designed by Toriyama? Or is it by someone mimicking his style? I can’t imagine they’ll ever change it, which is fine by me.

I don't know, maybe because they are making a new one and put them out every few years?
There was about a 7 year gap between Joker3Pro and DQM3 (The Dark Prince). But in that gap there were some mobile remakes of DQM1 and 2, which meant DQM3 was about ~4 years since the last DQM release.

It's been 3 years since DQM3 came out. It's the right time. It's just that Square Enix between DQMJ2 and DQM3 were being supreme faggots and refusing to release a lot of Dragon Quest games in the West (and the ones they did, they liked to fuck up).

Did you not watch the two hour long infomercial before the reveal where they showed off merch such as DQ Shampoo, DQ makeup sponges, DQ bath bombs, DQ bathtowels, DQ Glasses, DQ Sneakers, a $1500 music box...

I think they're funding Horii's retirement with all that.

What IS amusing is they didn't do that announcement live, they left, waited about 30 minutes, then showed the 10 minute video announcing "oh we fucked DQ12 up REAL BAD so we started over from scratch but hey here's some DQM to tide you over while we fix this." Normally you'd show that off during the infomercial and then take pre-staged questions from the other hosts, but, nope.

They knew it was gonna be real, real bad. There were almost half a million people watching what was supposed to be the DQ12 reveal live on Youtube and that chat crashed youtube's chat system when he announced they restarted it. Also crashed again when they showed off the DQ5 Waifus.

They're saying on X and Reddit that apparently Horii said when DQ11 came out that he had been penciling out a game where the plot was "what if dreams came true/affected reality" so that's probably going to be the theme of the game. DQ6 already did that, tho?

And apparently people already noticed that the trailer took place in the starting area of DQ9, only done up in high def.

As much as I love DQ VI, the main plot of the Archfiend wanting to take over the two realms kinda takes a backseat once you kill Murdaw and doesn't really pick back up until freeing the Citadel/Zenithia, so maybe he wants to take a second crack at it with a more present plotline.

Yay. Merch.
At this rate I wonder if Horii will ever retire or is he's about to go out on the job to the very end.

I’m just amused seeing people commenting “they wanted to see a darker take on Dragon Quest”, not realizing that’s how we’ve gotten to modern Final Fantasy being as… I’ll be generous and say mixed, as it is.

Dragon Quest clearly has a formula, and I’m honestly more surprised they admitted that fucking with it wasn’t working and are just starting over.
