I wish they'd release DQX outside of Japan.
They can't. Realistically it's impossible. The game's on it's 8th or 9th expansion now, not counting free updates and the base game. It has as much text in it as like all the other DQ games combined. Localizing that would be impossible, and that's before you consider having to set up a data center, hire support staff, etc.

The good news is fans localized it completely. You can play it right now if you want. IIRC Square Enix removed the geolock on IPs, too, which is kind of a de-facto nod that they're allowing this. (IIRC, you still don't want to get involved with the JP community / make problems for the support staff, or they will ban you.)

I was an avid player from September 2024-January 2025. I got through about to Version 4 and even paid real money to play it. Addicting as hell and if the set up process wasn't so nightmarish (fuck amazon) I'd say it's a good place to start if you wanna play a MMO.

also here's my character BTW. Play this game guys. It's worth it.

Wait, why is the setup nightmarish and why does it have anything to do with Amazon? The only thing that's made me hesitate is I'm too lazy to make a second Square Enix account

In other news, DQ7ReRemake is out. It's pretty good but giving voice to the female character makes her like 10 times more of an insufferable cunt. It does feel a bit easy compared to the other versions, even on the max difficulty.

Well if you wanna buy the game + all the expansions (on pc) usually foreign players buy through Amazon JP. I had a particularity bad time buying the game because Amazon kept locking my accounts. Also square enix's account system is shite but I'm sure you already knew that.

Lmao. Does she backtalk Orgodemir in this version? (It is a running gag in spinoffs).
Speaking of, what kind of voice they gave him?
*I only care about demons and monsters in these games, anyone else is set dressing*

I haven't got to Orgodemir but there are JP players that have already hit 4-5 turns on the postgame superbosses and superboss DLCs. The max reward cuts out at 25 turns, so... yeah.

There's apparently a specific combination that makes you do ~20,000 damage a turn. It's just a matter of setting it up. He could still improve it by doing seed farming (his stats aren't capped at 999 yet.)

I haven't gotten to hear Orgodemir's voice. While easy, I haven't been able to bring myself to just go full bore grindathon on it.

I can't remember if Shepherd was always this broken but Lambpede plus the Let Loose absolutely melts bosses. I picked it up on Ruff because I was interested in fucking with Monster Master after enjoying Monster Wrangler so much in DQ3HD2D, but I've kinda abandoned that in favor of just having him use his shepherd skills (the shepherd regens are also really nice for throwing on Maribel so I don't have to babysit her).

I'm finishing up Buccanham right now so maybe it falls off in the last quarter of the game but it's still absolutely busted.

Also something I noticed - Hustle Dance says it "Restores around 70 HP to all party members" which is pretty decent as filler healing, but I think they've made it actually scale off the Charm stat because my Aishe (who I've put mostly charm boosting equipment on) is actually restoring around 250HP to everyone with it which is absolutely bonkers.

Armamentalist/Ranger doesn't seem as good as I remember.

Wasn't there an offline version of DQX released or in development? They could at least translate that.

Stampede isn't really broken but it helps a lot mid game. Shepherd always seemed like a joke class so I think it makes sense to give it one of the better moves in the game. It ends up being a lot less useful late game, so it makes sense to have someone go for Shepherd right away.

Yes and no. DQX offline was just the base game + the first few expansions and was literally meant to let you import your save file to the MMORPG.
They did what?? The whole reason I love Dragon Quest is that it keeps going. That is why 7 is my favorite.

They made it shorter? What the fuck!?
Shorter and easier. Way, way easier. And that was after they had already made it shorter and easier with the 3DS remake.

No, I don't know why either. Given how many times they keep remaking it and how little time Horii has left, I'm guessing it was a sore spot with him.

Whoops lol. Clicked too fast and accidentally told Bobbie she's a terrible person for wanting to go live with Ellie, and there's no way to change my answer unless I want to go back to my save from an hour ago.

I saw that they cut three entire regions out of the game. But now I am seeing that they are still in, but optional?

What exactly is missing? If regions are cut, I'm totally off this train. And I was so hyped for this, too.

I was trying to find something about that, found this instead and was reminded of how much I hate the modern translations

I'm a bitch so I went back to my old save. Thankfully, it was only about half an hour with zoom and skipping cutscenes.

Oh, don't even get me started on how they fucked DQ over in the west. The fucking accents, the alliteration, the shitty puns, they rewrote entire series staples for retarded fucking jokes that I'm sure were just fucking hiiiilarious on the fucking Square Enix USA slack server.

The only saving grace is they went with the UK guys for voices and the like, to give it a different flavor than FF, and that's saved it. In another universe we'd have Team Four Star doing oh so fucking hilarious "Dragon Quest Abridged" dubs on the official localization.

DQ localization is never going to change as long as Yuji Horii is alive. People like to bitch about dangerhairs, but it was Richard Honeywood and Horii himself who worked together to set the standard on how to localize the games. Horii did this because he wants to sell to the absolute widest audience. He wasn't content with Dragon Quest remaining a niche franchise for nerds who read translation notes outside of Japan. He wanted the normgroid Nintendie audience. He wanted Dragon Quest to be a global property on par with Zelda or Kirby or Donkey Kong.

Don't forget - Horii isn't some put-upon old man. He's the CEO of Armor Project, which is the sole arbiter of what goes into Dragon Quest. Even Square-Enix has to go along with what he says, and every interview indicates that he's only gotten more hands-on in recent years when it comes to how his games are marketed abroad.

This is why I find the discourse in the west to be so... odd. So many people talk around the issue as if Horii is just a puppet being pulled around by evil Americans/Euros/Jews/women. It was those evil Americans who made him censor outfits, not a cost-benefit analysis rooted in the fact that getting a B from an increasingly conservative CERO instead of an A would probably cut sales by 20% which directly eats into his bottom line as a rights holder. The goofy names and accents are American wokalizers besmirching a proud Japanese institution, and not Horii insisting that the slop be tweaked in each market to be maximally digestible.

tl;dr it's easy to hate localizers, but do you have the courage to hate Yuji Horii?

I'd like some citations for any of this. I find it hard to believe he'd just come out and say "yeah I don't give a fuck go wild"

WaPo did a story (archive) where they talked with a lot of the foundational people who did localization of Japanese games.

Here's an excerpt from the Honeywood part:
Juggling creative decisions with visionary game makers was fraught with potential conflict. A few years later, after the major Square Enix merger, Honeywood was working on Nintendo DS remakes of Dragon Quest’s Zenithia trilogy (consisting of Dragon Quest IV, V and VI). He presented series creator Yuji Horii with a ledger of proposed name changes, leading to an argument over the name of a horse — and almost sank the franchise in the process.

“He wanted to call the horse Elizabeth,” Honeywood said. “After the Queen.” Honeywood objected, suggesting a more traditional horse name like Mary Lou instead. “Horii-san just jumped up and down,” Honeywood laughed, “like frothing at the mouth. ‘You cannot change this!’”
Honeywood didn’t understand why Horii was so connected to the name and pushed back. Horii explained it was because the horse turned into a Pegasus at the end of the game.
“I said, ‘Horii-san, that’s the next game. That’s like [Dragon Quest V] or [VI], and we’re still translating [IV] at this point. We’re not even discussing the same thing.”
“I don’t care,” Honeywood recalled Horii saying. “You have to keep it.”

Frazzled, he did just that.
Afterward, he was pulled aside by the Dragon Quest team. “Don’t upset him,” they told Honeywood. “We don't want to lose him over something like that.”

Dumbfounded, Honeywood replied, “You really think that he would give up working on Dragon Quest games with Enix over a horse’s name?”
“Yes.”

Horii reviews and gets a final say on every single change done in the localized script and wields enough influence to cut off a project entirely.
