I'm glad Piccolo became more relevant somewhat recently due to new form. Shame he basically became a support role again immediately after for Gohan to headshot Cell Max.

Piccolo was long overdue for a power up.
I remember everyone speculating the U6 Namekians were gonna fuse with him and that be his return to relevancy.

This is fair, but even then, the sadism is a bit out of character for Gohan since every rage moment he has before this is him just outright trying to kill the person that pissed him off. But I guess you could make the argument that being in a Super Saiyan form makes it worse. Since Goku does become pretty sadistic on Namek after he turns Super Saiyan.
I wonder if him almost losing his dad on Namek is what got him to not desire to let his rage get the better of him. He already saw his mentor die protecting him, but Goku going Super Saiyan was scaring him and Goku had to scream at him to get off the planet. While he didn't know that his dad tried to show Frieza mercy (if just because Goku wanted to have a chance for a rematch like with Vegeta), him wanting to be merciful to Cell doesn't come off as uncharacteristic even though he had to eventually be pushed into killing him due to him being an unrepentant monster.
