I believe so but now he's one of the strongest because of a wish. Who would had known making a wish was easier than wasting hours training. All Goku had to do is wish to be stronger and he'd kick Freiza's ass!
It burns up your life force to turn into power. The alien dude (as well as Granollah) basically only have like 3 years left to live because the rest of their live was turned into energy essentially.

Why didn't krillin and Co. not think of that in the Namek saga? Just make Frieza to be weaker than any of them, kick his ass and boom problem solved.
