I don't understand why he had to make those wood blocks to couple two ropes together. Wouldn't a sheet bend serve the same purpose, but without the dense hunk of sharp edges whipping about overhead?

Also, for all the talk about not wanting to use blocks and tackles because of "friction" or losses or whatever, those lines sure do go around a lot of corners and through pipes and such.

What exactly are the drilled out golf balls for and is it normal or another doug invention?

All the sharp edges are going to eat into that poly rope he's using, thus defeating the purpose.

Was I the only one cringing when he used a hose clamp on the kernmantle rope?

The hose clamp proved to me he doesn't know knots. A very concerning state for a sailboat captain. I really enjoyed him talking about how important chamfering the wood blocks was 3 later.

Doug learns to drive the boat.

Doug screws with the propeller shaft.

Doug gets nervous.

Doug (maybe?) calls off the trip downriver.

Nothing like waiting until 2 days before taking your big ass boat down a crowded waterway on a busy holiday weekend to learn how to steer the boat.

I hope he doesn't kill any innocent bystanders.
Obviously he feels no responsibility to others for property damage.
Remember his "So if I park my dingy next to your 9 million dollar boat and my dingy catches fire and burns your boat your saying I owe you 9 million dollars? That's not how it works."

That is exactly how it works and why sane people have insurance.

Anyone wonder if Adam Sessler is his kid?
They look a lot alike and both seem to be stuck on "I am right about everything" mode.

The amount of issues his retard prop pitch controller is causing him is unreal. I'm thinking a manual control would have been easier and better.

Also in case anyone missed it, the boat is an absolute pig to steer and especially dock. Lots of people predicted this issue due to the lack of a bow thruster. He's already run into some rocks and put a dent in his boat.

I think a punting pole would be better tbh.

Over/under on him finding a convenient reason to postpone this trip?
It isn't to late, he could blame the Coast Guard.
His disciples would believe anything he said at this point.
Hey, that give me and idea for an excuse.
He calls up the crew and says "Hey guys sorry to disappoint you but one of you pussed out and said he couldn't make it. I am too much of a gentleman to say who it was. We will try again later."

His followers go crazy trying figure out who the heretic was and none of them suspect that Doug "felt the fear and called it off."

Watching the video up above and he’s a creative guy finding solutions for problems. Hey, that’s pretty neat!

Read the thread a bit and these solutions get worse and worse as you learn more about boats. When you start seeing hose clamps and rats nests of hydraulic lines as fixes the fear starts to build. Those head chopper metal brackets in the galley are my favorite.

Doug has this misplaced sort of optimism and some kind of fundamental ignorance. He's not dumb, but then he's also completely retarded. He's genuinely suprised the overweight, underpowered boat can't get up to speed. Legitimately don't understand why he didn't add either a larger motor and a bow thruster, especially with his hang ups on redundancy. He also mentioned something about towing. It's crazy.

With him going to Kerr: He did say in the video that he's resigned to spend another month at the harbor, but the overriding concern in the conversation was to "not be on the news"...

Doug does the "Hey Human" podcast

Says the plan is to go to Kerr and stay there and learn how to sail the boat and stay there until the end of hurricane season. Who knows if the plan's changed since he recorded the podcast. Also, there's apparently no docks or facilities at Kerr large enough to support the boat, so he's going to be anchoring and hauling his waste ashore. (Or just dumping it overboard...)

"The boat is built to be operated singlehanded" - Sure, not counting the 2 guys in the dinghy that have to tow you and push you around everywhere

Interviewer: "Is it a letdown now that it's done?" Doug: "No! Because there's always something to fix!"

https://youtu.be/l-6-rWQQGZU&t=413s bookmarked for where he tries to pump some water out of one of his fuel tanks. Apparently there’s been a leak from where one of the masts was supposed to be installed.

There’s a shot of Doug standing in the machine room and you can see a home grade electrical panel cover in the background. More sharp edges waiting to slash the unwary.

That’s what I’m loving with this guy, there is a fractal amount of things wrong on this boat. It’s wrong no matter how far you zoom into the work.

Am I the only one getting the Groverhaus vibe from readin this? Same energy.
Also what is this with men and boats. Im a man and I dont get it. My father took a loan to buy 12 000$ boat with an engine despite the whole family asking him to settle on a smaller boat so he wont need to borrow money. At least he had a common sense to buy a factory made metal boat.

We're talking entirely different time scales but there's also the fact the less than ideal design decisions of Groverhaus would at worst be an inconvenience/eyesore. As an example, the criticism of the Groverhaus stairs over there being a chest height window at the landing is a world apart from storing propane in an enclosed space along a running engine and a machine shop with zero safety devices/alarms installed.

Groverhaus was built to be a home and fills that role, the only thing in question is how well. The Seether was built to be a sail boat and a research vessel but is guaranteed to sink if it encounters waves and will only ever be researched by the NTSB.

Do you think Doug will ever be able to perform an ocean crossing? Or is the Seeker going to be a less seaworthy vessel than the Kon Tiki raft?
