Doomkid's still alive? I thought he finally grew some brain cells and avoided this kind of drama. Anyway, him still siding with Troonworld's finest is a reminder of why long-term residents from Troonworld are mentally ill.

Doomkid is a sad case because the dude made very entertaining Doom related videos and I'd watch them repeatedly back in the day. His editing is good, the voice is soothing and his tutorial videos did help me quite well.
He has potential to be even better if he focused on that.

I just wish he had some common sense and stepped away from Doomworld and made more tutorials or just casually stream himself making wads and chilling.

He's the only KKKlub member I appreciate to some degree and am thankful for his content.

The rest of them can disappear into the oblivion and I wouldn't shed a tear about it.

@Untermensch Doom Janny funny you mentioned that. I just told Doomkid that I like his persona he's showed in the past, as well as his youtube content, but not the fake mask he wears on DW. The guy assumed I hate his guts, because "the insignificant dork dared to criticize him". Yeah, his ego still gets the better of him by the looks of it.

By the way, the comment chain under archcynic's DoD roast is developing well. If someone wants to take a few screenshots to preserve it, go ahead before it gets nuked. Can't do it myself at the moment, I'm at work.

Forgot to mention that Doomkid's wads are fun to play as well, usually because he focuses on vanilla mapping and can make gameplay feel fresh with dehacked changes so much so that even slaughter moments can be less grindy and actually fun to fight.

I can't seem to find archcynic's comment. It's probably buried in the sea of shit, so if anybody could link it, that would be great. (if it's possible)

I don't know if there's a way to link to specific comments directly, but the comments are still there if you want to dig them up for an easier read. You have to sort them by newest and then scroll down to the comments made yesterday.

There's also some retard there with a nickname "alittleguy8114", who is an avid KF lurker, claims to hate the forum, but apparently is unable to stop visiting it. He thought he would be exposing me there, and scare me off, but then when it didn't happen, started to delete comments. So if it looks like i'm double posting, I'm actually replying to some hilarity. At some point he said we're all evil because we are part of a forum who causes people to commit suicide. There's also something buggy with the comment chain, some of the posts repeat for some reason, so if you think i'm posting the same comment twice for no reason... it's not me doing it, it's either youtube, or my account is bugged.

I actually very much like MtPain's prose. Even if it's a little silly to equate Doom maps to grand works of art (especially when so many of them are the same nowadays...) it added texture and character to the show because he is, for all his faults, an exceptionally skilled writer. He could elevate an otherwise good level into something ethereal with just words because of his passion.

The problem, of course, is that you can tell that at this point he is obviously bullshitting. Just go back and watch his review of Haunting Dreams in Scythe 2 versus what he spits out now. I swear to God he's used that generic fade in + music playing for about ten seconds before speaking transition like five times in the last three videos. It means nothing because he is using all of his talents and powers to say literally nothing. He is so afraid of being controversial he's essentially blowing smoke up the viewer's ass and it all turns into useless background noise.

When the DW friends he bought with patreonbux inevitably turn on MtPain it is going to make a nervous wreck out of him.

Is it safe to say that I don't buy MtPain's theatrics at all? Doom isn't like some grand art compared to paintings from Michelangelo/Picasso/Van Gogh. It's a landmark in video game industry obviously but it's not the uber-grand masterpiece that he likes to paint Doom with.

I hope that happens. He will have to find out the hard way that dealing with narcissistic schizos isn't worth all the trouble.

Boring is right, even on the modding side do you see anything new noticeable unlike the last decade? The big projects back then have either halted due to laziness, with a little bit of lack of interest or the authors have retired and moved on to something else aside from Doom. The community experiencing an untreated hemorrhaging because of their identity politics or other dumb shit like that Marisa noncery only made things worse. I have a good feeling that this meme of DSP turning around will apply to them in the next decade.

Don't forget the Kool Kids Club + DW moderators simping for Bethsoft and trying to hijack mapping standards causing tons of community figures to dip. Including Kraflab who was also harassed, with the blessing of site moderators, for removing ENDOOM support from dsda-doom.

EDIT: BTW I have an insane conspiracy theory that the harassment and troonerization of DW is so they can have de-facto control of literally the last independent Doom fan space. As they outlined in the ID24 specification, they specifically wanted to "ensure the continued commercial viability of Doom + Doom II" and hijacking mapping standards and the community were obviously part of that. Linguica might have stopped it but he's an absentee father who hasn't been active on the site in years. Rooting out people like Kraflab was just par for the course for their plans because trannies make excellent corporate slaves, and non-trannies like Xaser could easily be bought.

Of course those plans have probably been blown the fuck up by the new Xbox CEO gutting bethsoft.

The best DoD episode was the one he made on Mock 2: The Speed of Stupid. Barely had any moralfagging about "aged humor" and even poked fun at his own style during the Ejipt and Tapeworms Suck Anii segments. He seemed to be having fun with it. I too got sick of following the channel somewhere along the way when the series started to be more about waxing poetics rather than giving honest opinions. I'm not a fan of the map myself, but I did consider his words on The Mucus Flow a lot more during a time when he didn't give every single other map the same treatment. You got to have some Gene Bird shittalking too to liven things up.

I don't know why Iccarus got such bad TDS as an Aussie. He was drunk off his face talking about bad takes of American politics and I unsubscribed. Haven't watched his stuff since. Having kids didn't beat any sense into him. Thanks for teaching me what a "plinth" is, I guess.

Doomkid was genuinely entertaining, but he did a fence sitting video about the state of DOOM modding. His mods are good and well thought out. I come back to his stuff ever so often, but do so knowing he silently endorses troonery is total disappointment.

Thanks to Nightdive basically being "Doomworld Studios", the Kool Kids Club can now invade and wreck any retro game community of your choosing.

Next up are SiN and Thief. Enjoy!

As I was writing this, I realize this started to sound faggy. But I’m just going to run with it, I’m half agreeing here anyway.

I think it depends. A lot of Doom maps have special qualities that are hard to express.

There was a line about Sunder Map 3’s Dreaming Garden about how block shapes related to childhood innocence. Utter cringe, bad take.

But it’s hard to look at Oceanmadman’s El Duelo from D.O.O.M. and not be moved. And his write up captured it extremely well.

Whats more, I’m fascinated by the contrast between more “primitive” works and modern “professional” ones.

Simulacrum, is for example, very well made in terms of visuals and presentation. It doesn’t feel cynical to me, either.

Although I see the complaints about gameplay (its gameplay never bothered me), that’s not my issue with it.

It lacks, for a better word, magic. Professional sheen, evocative scenes, and yet so much of it falls flat. I even generally like Myolden’s work (Nostalgia is great).

And then I find myself returning to Alien Vendetta. Many of those maps’ visuals don’t hold up. The gameplay is way more variable in quality (Demonic Hordes sucks btw).

Yet, it’s always a joy to return to. Maybe it’s because there’s a slightly better sense of continuity and sense of escalation in the “narrative”. But whatever is there, it has soul. Misri Halek is still great (to say the least), No Guts No Glory is still a blast, and Overwhelming Odds still has a bit of a cinematic touch. I can almost feel that world when I step out in the courtyard of Bulls on Parade. I don’t know why.

I look at the Midi pack for it, and I’m still surprised. These songs are mostly not just bangers, but often totally ill suited for the maps they are paired for.

Into The Forest I Go To Lose My Mind and Find My Soul is a five minute epic full of so much anxiety, mystery, and forlorn. But it’s for fucking Crimson Tide. A quick 5 minute map that’s actually discontinuous in theme with the AV episode it’s in.

At that point, do we call it pretentious? Or is there just something legitimately weird about that megawad that pulls out that much emotion and creative energy.

Some of these works really do have some sort of ‘pull’ on me. I can’t totally explain it.

I think Alien Vendetta is worth fascinating over, because I can relate to some of its pull. I could never say the same about Simulacrum or the vast majority of modern megawads.

If you can:
  • Find words to express why you like or dislike a thing
  • Record footage of yourself playing the thing
  • Talk into a microphone for an hour
You can make primo Youtube bucks. That's all MtPain is doing. It's clearly lucrative, you can afford to

1789484886107.png

uh, pay rent for one month, at best.

There is originality and artistic expression in level design, enemy placement, event triggers, art direction, new assets and everything else that makes up a good WAD. Good music can make the most mediocre gameplay feel like the coolest thing ever. There's absolutely creativity and personal expression in the combination of those elements. I don't care to listen to someone drone on about it, but yea for the couple thousand people who do, I guess you can afford a couple grocery trips.

As Troonworld owner Linguica (edit: and the quoted poster) once put it:

Didn't Crimson Tide use that one track from the ROTT soundtrack? The one which is played in ROTT episode end screens, what was it called... "Watz next"?

The midi I’m referring to is part of a midi pack (replacements for the original OST) that got released in 2022.

Originally it had The End of Doom by Bobby Prince. Which also does not fit lmao. Poor Crimson Tide.

My main criticism of slaughter wads is never about the difficulty. It's more of a secondary criticism, because the Doom community is mighty autistic and some well-known imbeciles have no ceiling on how unforgiving a map can be. It's almost like they want to make levels for a TAS run, then normal players.
The difficulty doesn't really bother me. After 32 years, there are going to be people who know every in and out of the engine. What gets me is the absolute non-creativity of it all. Everyone follows the same lame formula. I hate how every single release has to have a section where you fight multiple archviles with only a stripper pole for cover and monster closets of excessive amounts of the same enemies over and over.

For me the problem with modern megawads is apparent by simply looking at the automap (here taken in GZDoom because I'm too lazy to install a map editor).

The average Alien Vendetta map:
av-m28.png

The average Simulacrum map:

simulacrum-m9.png

Alien Vendetta has actual structure and progression, compartmentalized rooms (you actually go through doors), and the overwhelming majority of maps are like this.

Simulacrum suffers from what I'd call "painting syndrome". The overwhelming majority of maps are enormously large open spaces, essentially one giant blob, that can be viewed at great distance, so that as much detail and artistic expression as possible can be packed into a screenshot. Map11 is an especially extreme example of this:

simula-m11.png mirebough.png

That giant tumor you see is probably the single largest area in the entire megawad.

The problem with these kinds of enormous areas is that, to justify their existence, they have to be filled with an absolute fuckton of monsters, and the resulting gameplay is always, always slaughter.

You don't find slaughter like this in most of Alien Vendetta because it has actual progression (like an actual fucking game level) and isn't just one giant arena where a billion revenants and mancubi eat up your rockets. It doesn't have these gigantic fucking monstrous areas because, for one, at the time they had stricter limits, and for the other, the goal of mapping wasn't to show off your artistic prowess to your friends.

Alien Vendetta is meant to be played. Simulacrum is meant to be looked at.

Artistic or not, it's ugly most of the time as well. Whoever made that green abomination and decided that it also needs a green sky is utterly retarded. All these bazillion linedefs, all these hours spent in the editor, just to create a green pile of vomit that is not only ugly, but also boring to look at. I'd rather stare at a Sandy Petersen map for 10 hours than to play Simulacrum for 10 minutes.

EDIT: I also don't understand how these mappers get a kick from making these uninspired turd. When we mocked them with the CCP project, I was so bored in emulating this visual style. The first time I ever felt depressed when making Doom maps... and mine were just 5 hour speed maps. Maps like the shit in Simulacrum take dozens of hours to make.
