I've always just been primarily a lurker in Doom communities over the years, not an active poster in any of them. When I get on a Doom kick, I want a fun new WAD to play, or hop in multiplayer and play some Coop or deathmatch in something not much more complicated than Dwango5. So it's definitely wishful thinking to just want a community that follows my standard, when I put nothing into it.
ZDoom, almost 20 years ago now, created a schism. ZDoom ports are "the way" to play multiplayer. I participated in that plenty back in Skulltag and earlier Zandronum days. The problem with ZDoom, beyond the community, is that it's not Doom. It has its own floating point physics, own mapping rules, no standard specification, and can't even fully document ZScript. And ZScript alone allows WAD authors to break the engine rules of Doom, so determinism is gone. It is a constant moving target. So long as ZDoom is "the way" to make "modern" WADs, or "the way" to play online, that schism will forever squelch the "actual", Vanilla Doom experience. People jizz their pants over games made in the ZDoom engine like Selaco and Mohrta, or MyHouse.WAD and say "Oh my god, can you believe this is Doom?!". No, I can't believe it's Doom. It's not Doom. That's not the Doom engine. That's ZDoom, an engine created by a tranny, a mind-raped loser, and now run by a committee of other freaks who will surely continue ballooning their egos in their perceived dominance over their claim to the Doom standard.
The gatekeeping that must be done, for my daydreamed Doom community, starts with that: ZDoom ain't Doom anymore, and hasn't been for a long time. There's plenty of amazing projects which have been created for it, and I'm not taking that for granted. But call it UZCoom or something else.
