Which brings to question JYs CRIMINAL trial for his weapons violation.
He would have to claim indigent to get a court appointed lawyer in the States, is it the same in Canada?

Donny is in custody and gets duty council. The equivalent of a public defender in Canada. Donny can apply for legal aid and may get it because hes already in jail, the caveat to getting legal aid or not is usually based on whether you're in custody or not. He should have filled that out asap as they keep them on the range.
Problem is that all takes time and based on his charge it would be quicker and get him free faster if he just plead guilty and just hung around jail for a couple weeks which is exactly what duty council will recommend. Applying for legal aid and then convincing a lawyer to work on legal aid (they get paid half when working on legal aid and dont think that isnt reflected in the amount of time they put into your case) can take months, so it's not very practical in Donnys case which is unfortunate.
TLDR: donny could get free representation possibly but it would leave him in jail longer even if he somehow won which he won't.

Have to agree with John. Here remand centres (jails) are short term detention facilities usually for any kind of pre-trial detention and short stint sentences. Prisons (provincial and federal) are for longer term incarcerations. Most people in prison are serving time for offenses they have been convicted of.
As for the notion that someone like Donald would be killed or seriously injured in a remand centre (jail) is a page right out of Tommy Robinson (and supporter) playbook. For the record. Just before the whole Yaniv story began to unfold to the general public - Donald spent 9-10 days in pre-trial custody in both BC and Alberta. Donald fled Alberta when he knew multiple charges were pending around December 2018. While in BC, Alberta finally laid multiple charges and Donald was well aware of the charges and the Alberta wide warrant that was issued. Donald refused to deal with his Alberta warrant, and a Canada wide warrant was finally issued in the last week of June 2019.
Donald spent 9-10 days in pre-trial custody in both a BC remand centre (jail) and an Alberta (Calgary) facility. He wasn't beaten up or killed. He had nice things to say about the guards.
