Have you ever felt like you can't engage in your favorite past time, or can't finish a video game all the way through, because you're just too bored or tired to care? I've been busy lately, and noticed that in my moments of free time, playing games just isn't doing it for me. Maybe I just have a lot on my mind, but it really sucks that I can't have this one form of escapism from my daily bullshit.

I had that happen to me recently. One week I was racing through chill indie titles, week before that I was grinding Monster Hunter and Palworld, and then suddenly one day I came home from work and despaired a tad because nothing at all seemed appealling. I wanted relaxation, but just thinking of going on MH or one of the ARPG titles I was playing at the time felt like work after work, and the bite-sized idle-tier games felt too monotonous at the same time. Spent some days just going to bed early after that and it got better.

Sounds like you aren't in fact feeling ready to escape. When you were a kid, you didn't have a developed sense of responsibility, you didn't really give fuck. Now as an adult you're always acutely aware that even if the game you're playing is fun, you're still supposed to be doing something else with your time.

I basically stopped playing games (or at least reduced the time I spend playing by like 90%) in the year I graduated college and haven't felt like coming back to it since then. I blame the fact that modern games are generally fucking dogshit and a total embarrassment, and when I play games I replay old shit I like or catch up on old shit I still haven't played. Lately I've been replaying stuff like Re-Volt and Lego Racers and having an absolute blast even though they're relatively easy kiddie games and very short. Last new-to-me game I played was the original Unreal and that was also a great experience.
