Have you ever felt like you can't engage in your favorite past time, or can't finish a video game all the way through, because you're just too bored or tired to care? I've been busy lately, and noticed that in my moments of free time, playing games just isn't doing it for me. Maybe I just have a lot on my mind, but it really sucks that I can't have this one form of escapism from my daily bullshit.

One of the symptoms of depression is losing interest and no longer getting enjoyment from previously pleasurable activities.
This alone doesn't mean you're depressed though, maybe you've just been playing shitty games lately.

Nope, there's no other way to explain it, I must be clinically depressed. Guess I gotta kill myself now, thanks a lot.*sigh*

Yeah I figured it was something along those lines, but it's hard to cut out that which is stressful. Oh well, I will persevere and push on, until the good Lord decides to give me a break, so I can play my righteous vidya.

Maybe you're just maturing? I stopped being able to get into video games in my early 20s. I've tried playing games since then, but they don't hold my attention at all.

To be more specific about a solution to this problem, when anhedonic, pick something you normally enjoy doing and keep doing it even if you don't feel like you're enjoying it. After a while you might realize you are enjoying it and be glad you didn't quit earlier. It might sound like bullshit, but it's worked for me before, even though it doesn't work every time.

I don’t play nearly as much as I did when I was younger, but like a couple others have said, I’ll go months without touching a game and then spend my days off one week just playing.

If it’s not affecting your everyday life and getting in the way of your responsibilities and obligations, who cares how little or how often you play vidya?

You will find lots of people who say they are getting less interested in games as they get older. Its only a temporary phase though, people usually find another game they get into or they change the kind of games they play. There are 60 year olds playing Rainbow Six Siege so its probably just anxiety in life causing you to draw away. You might also be playing the same games constantly which will get boring.

The reality is the games industry just changes. Games today are just flat out worse than when I grew up, at least IMHO. Outside of a few outliers, I find myself playing more and more older games and hacks than newer ones. I think the emphasis on graphics ruined focus on gameplay and storyline. I no longer enjoy most of what's out or they take up too much time for me to enjoy as an adult.

A good example is Diablo 4, I played the demo for almost a week straight until 3AM every single day. I liked it, I had lots of fun, and will never purchase the game because it just took too much of my time.

Bottom line is, modern games are noticeably worse. They're either generic copy and pasted shooter (Helldiver, Destiny, etc.) or they're walking simulator, or they're online MOBAs, or they're anime games filled with weeaboo crap. There's just not much left for someone like me who enjoyed who enjoyed fantasy like the OG Final Fantasy or Castlevania growing up. Plus, it doesn't help all of my favorite games were ported to the PS4 so it makes extraordinarily difficult to justify spending money on another console or gaming PC ever again.

Yeah I feel ya. Videogames to me are boring right now. I usually play things like mafia or new Vegas. But mafia isn’t really built like a true open world game so it can get boring at times and new Vegas I’ve played a bagilion times but I don’t have mods (Xbox and I’d play 4 but even base game is just broken and crashes my Xbox so hard that it breaks other games and I have to reboot my Xbox). The only online games I cared about was BF1 and BFV but I get really worked up when I play those.

As of now I would much rather take up other hobbies like music, writing, drawing Photography etc. because it’s actually worth the effort and I have something after that I can keep for the troubles. Games get so washed out now a days that it would take a year and all your progress is gone because the next game released or a new updates up. The only one ironically to that was bad that I had fun with was fallout 76, id replay that if I had friends to play with.

I have a lull in my schedule coming up, so I think I'm going to spend the extra time on some other hobbies like writing and reading, just to offer myself some variety. It's good for the mind and soul.

On a semi unrelated note, if you ever get a PC, you should definitely get Battlebit. It really scratched that classic Battlefield itch for me, but it will still get you riled up at times for sure.

Yeah I feel that sometimes I have a lot more fun playing a Mario game then trying to deal with a modern shooter. I bought sonic adventure 2 just to replay and it’s great because I can replay my favorite levels and then walk away.
