It's like Cuties. The movie theoretically deplored child exploitation but it spent time lavishly display exactly the thing they actually condemned.
This is my take as well. It's not that the trailer presents the Satanic orgy with children watching as a good thing per se. And, like Cuties, it may even nominally/superficially be saying "This obviously bad thing is bad, actually!"
But, what did the movie actually consist of? 90 minutes of kids twerking and stuff, right? People didn't tune in to learn a valuable lesson that children aren't sex objects. They tuned in to watch children *be* sex objects.
Likewise, here, everyone ends up dying as a result of their human sacrifice festival. Granted. But what did you actually consume as entertainment? Interspecies sex, vomiting into a pig's mouth, a man agonizingly burnt alive, etc.
It all exists, like Cuties or monkey torture videos, not for any sincere moral lesson or to contrast with an (unseen) greater good, but to titillate and arouse people with the depraved acts on screen that they enjoy intrinsically.
Pretty much. There's quite a few examples of this... they are more subtle in DOS II, but in BG3 there are some blatant moments... there are for one characters that are sort of... "excused" for horrendous actions (ie Minthara, and you even get that one 69 scene), ShadowHeart (I'm gonna get hate for this one... but like Minthara and Lohse to some extent there's the "i was possessed/mind controlled/whatever" excuse)... in BG3 you get to slaughter all those kids in the grove and see them dead. Or then you get to do that in Last Light Inn. You also get to kill goblin kids. And kill that one gith egg. Lots of dead kids in these games... Wasn't there a basement in DOS II full of ghosts of abused dead kids as well?
Or that pretty graphic scene where Orin slits the throat of that kid who comes to your camp?
Gortash being
sold by his parents to Raphael and presumably abused?
Then you have that little girl in DOS II who was possessed by demons and that you can save, and in BG3 Astarion
kidnaps a bunch of kids into a vampire sex cult.
...and the hag who literally eats children but okay sure Grimm folklore or whatever, except that if you always help her she
sends you a letter saying she wants to "climb you like a tree"..., Raphael telling Mol she's like a "flower waiting to be plucked" or something...
... and then there's that one cursed dead kid in Cazador's mansion...
And then ShadowHeart's father
turning into "a wolf" who chases her through a forest, and she's "saved" by a cult, and the good ending is her forgiving her parents, in fact the whole story makes you feel very guilty for not helping them. Pious people, who turn into wolves, and all kids in the cult have to undergo that kind of ritual... okay, read in between the lines.... her whole goth girl with daddy issues character was built to titillate nerds, now tell me that isn't true.
And then in both games the creepy toy maker, and in BG3 he
hides explosives in children's toys, and there's a store where they sell explosives/fireworks to children. Although you can blow it up into the stratosphere and that's one of the most fun parts of the game imo
Mizora preying on Will when he's a teen and the whole sexual tone between them... okay, could excuse that one sort of is this "cougar who gets wet at violence" character trope didn't appear so much.
The "mind controlled/possessed woman who is good if only she is shown the light" thing is a big trope in this game apparently... Lohse, ShadowHeart, Minthara, Laezel, Karlach to a degree (she's basically Lohse 2.0), Bracchus' Rex's gf who turns into a skeleton and now worships the goddess or whatever (although you can kill her in a pretty funny way), Orin to a degree with the whole
incest thing.
Also, that weird mad scientist guy in Fort Joy that when you look him he has 2 daggers, called Chastity and Abstinence, with this description:
"The encrusted blood still sticking to this dagger reminds you of something Mama always told you. Those who deny their appetites make up for them in other ways. One way or another, the blood will flow."
Political much? But hey you get to meet his mother and tell her she failed as a parent so that's funny.
And oh yeah there's also this one kid in said weirdo's basement.
And if you play as Durge in BG3 you can't tell me there isn't some obvious gore porn and titillation to the whole thing.
I'm forgetting some but as it is, it's quite the body count isn't it?
Idk. Just strikes me as weird, is all. Raising awareness for child abuse? Sure, that's one thing, another is showing dead kids repeatedly, showing kids being killed, showing kids who were abused and forced to turn into vampires trying to drink your blood, being rewarded with an explicit sex scene with a woman who gets wet at the thought of slaughtering a bunch of kids and their parents... that's a bit odd.
I have a weird feeling about this one. I think it might be pretty cool gameplay wise, but story wise...? I definitely think that whatever weirdness is under the surface is def going to come out in full force because as others said they are emboldened after BG3's success.
I could be wrong! We'll see, in time. All I am saying is... there's def some questionably writing choices and it's more than just a one off thing.
