Don't quote me on this, but I recall reading that the invasion of Ukraine cut them off from a lot of their workers and they had to hire more Western "talent" - BG3's Act 1 and 2 are markedly different, better written and less degenerate/woke than Act 3, and they were even more so during the EA.

Thing is, the announcement wasn't greeted with widespread excitement from what I can gather (journalists aren't human and don't count). Most of the comments oscillate between confusion and disgust.

I am now comparing it to the trailer of Dragon Age: Origins in my head - your party traversing dangerous terrain, culminating in a cool fight where they get to showcase their abilities. Even though that trailer was a bit too "Hollywood", it still successfully zeroed in on what makes fantasy cRPGs popular and the kind of content people want to see.

Now compare it to this shit - racemixing, gratuitous sex and gore, human sacrifice, bizarre revelry. Where is a dude in plate armor stabbing an orc to death, where is a mage throwing a fireball at a horde of goblins?

This looks like edgier modern D&D art - food, parties, sex - no actual adventuring to be seen.
