Interesting quote from @Bolo talking about the new Disney movie, Turning Red:
I would say to not read much into it, the period thing will be at most just a gag or quick thing in the movie, the article used it because it makes a good clickbait to have a "pixar movie about periods".

They are trying to make the movie to be more interesting than it is really, this concept of "teen changing into creatures as a metaphor for puberty" is pretty much film genre on itself, the 80's had a bunch of these movies after the sucess of "Teen Wolf".

And I liked the trailer of the movie, looks fine for what it is, but at the same time, anyone can tell how the movie is going to play out, because these last Pixar Movies have been on a really safe side, and even the ones that I enjoyed, like Lucca, the played as second-rate to the classic, and I doubt "Turning Red" is going to flip the formula.

Also, the thing about these Disney/Pixar/Calart folks is that they are very much in essense very sheltered "good person" liberals.

They come from high-middle class and rich families, They get their opinons from their aproved peers and they think of themselves very progressive, but when push comes to shove, they stay on their safety zone, this whole "we are pushing buttons! We are normalizing old stigmas, we are making progress" is nothing but play act.

So the plot to Turning Red is out via golden books. Looks like a snorefest. Also if mommy tells you to stop being a troon or a brat, it's fine to blow them off because IT'S WHO I AM MOM!!!11

So I guess the director, due to spending her young adult life on Tumblr (you know she did), still has some mommy issues because she's half-Chinese, and Chinese women are insufferable as-is. Guess instead of going to counselling or trying to reconcile with her, she decided to use animation as self-therapy or something.

Great.

B-b-but Disney told me it was an inspiring and heartwarming utopia that was filled with black and brown people. They would never lie to me!
To be fair to Encanto, they do actually address Colombia's violent history and reveal that the reason why the family and villagers are in the Encanto in the first place was because their original village was burned to the ground by raiders and the family's grandfather got slaughtered by them. (With machetes! In front of his young wife and infant children! Fun times!) The Encanto is only safe because there's massive fucking mountains that are magical on every side of it preventing outsiders from coming in.

This thread seems to really have a hate boner for the movie, but I quite liked it and thought that it's one of Disney's better movies in a long time.

Asians can be weird as hell about their heritage. I've seen Asians brag about how they do things better than whitey, and they only do xyz thing that whites never do (which I've noticed them to be things my white boomer parents do), and such. And then immediately turn around and scream about how horrible they have it because they're Asian and their parents have horribly high standards or shit. Even when they're half a step above neet and have no self awareness about it.

I thought the story was mediocre as hell with ugly Tumblr character designs. If you kept the plot more or less the same and made all the characters white it wouldn't get nearly the fuss.

Honestly I thought that Lilo and Stitch did the same basic premise a lot better, with much better character design.

You could say that again. :heart-full:

I noticed lately does Disney not want to make attractive people anymore. Lately all their characters look ugly?

That's everyone, but after Frozen, they don't want to trump Queen Elsa while still trying to make characters look like her.

Goes to prove that Elsa is the creator's pet, as well as the fandom's pet. To me, she was just wasted potential.

Also, heaven forbid that Disney and Tumblr artists in general, make minorities look horrifying and fugly, while the so-called "White devil" characters are always attractive. Who is being racist again? Hmmm?

I always thought they were just doing rehashed renditions of war propaganda. But, if you blatantly tell them that, get a bucket of popcorn ready.

Tiana was very attractive, as was Prince Naveen. Jasmine, of course, needs no explanation.

Disney, you were literally doing this shit just fine a decade ago wtf.

I miss the days of Tiana, Naveen, Jasmine, Mulan (animated version), and Alladin.

What the bloody hell Disney?
