So, are the OG graphics censored as well when used? Because if they aren't, then this just sounds like sour grapes coming out of Mark Kern for once, which is strange since he's usually a bit more on point with his doomerposting about modern day Blizzard and the game industry.

Doesn't Kern spend most of hist time grifting about his nonexistent mmo? I have a hard time imagining him being on point about anything, really.
Most people doomposting about the D2 remake give me the same vibe of 4channers looking for the next TORTanic to guffaw at.

Looking at most recent screenshots, like the rogue encampment, it just looks kinda...bland. I mean, not even counting the ugly characters, just the general ambience of it. Almost feels like a soul vs soulless meme

I'm probably gonna stick to playing the original. Just hoping that Blizz leaves that untouched and doesn't pull a WC3R on it

Looks like they upped the brightness in that area specifically. It worked for Diablo 3 (I liked it at least) because the art style had space for it. Like it or not, it was a more colorful game. On Diablo 2, the more muted colors require harsher lights. It worked with the old sprite-based game because the edges on everything were pretty harsh, but with smooth 3D models you lose some of that effect and things look muddled.

Also, what did they do with the spell effects and dynamic lights? Everything looks so eye-searingly bright whenever there's any kind of spell or particle effect on screen.

If even half the shit the Mark Kern was accused of doing on Firefall was true, he's an absolute lolcow. My personal favorite was when he read a thread about how terrible PVP was on their forums and rage canceled PVP in a game that was trying to be a eSport without informing anyone else on staff before hand.

Ohhhh 100%. But I do believe him introducing Blood Elves as the pretty horde race for the asisn market in WoW first expansion. So I can believe his shit posting grips about D2 Remastered.

While Kern does offer some unique insight into the industry given his past experience and he isn't necessarily wrong about all of the points he makes, I'd still take anything he says with a massive grain of salt since he spends way too much time on Twitter doomposting and harvesting clout from other people who are jaded about the state of modern video games.

It's a bit annoying when a lot of people treat what he says as gospel truth purely because he was a dev at Blizzard back during its golden era.

inb4 all copies of diablo 2 are automatically updated to the Remastered version a la Warcraft 3, breaking any and all mods, destroy any and all old save files, and then the remaster is just the game but with more polygons.

People who think this won't happen is naive. Blizzard wants you to migrate to nuBattleNet since it doesn't financially make sense to maintain the legacy servers. Of course they gonna force the upgrade to "ensure that the customer gets the latest and greatest experience that Battle.Net has to offer".

Oh god, don't get my hopes up!

For real though, the amount of people saying shit like "I can't wait to relive my D2 glory days" is some sad shit. Like go play fucking D2 then. What's stopping you? Some old graphics/UI? Ever since when has that stopped the old school gaming breed from enjoying something? Oh no! It doesn't tax your $4000 pc and it doesn't have rtx/dlss!

Idk, most of the hype sounds like some mid-life crisis stuff to me. It's not going to be the same experience. Just like the ppl who thought WoW classic was gonna bring back those 'glory days'. I honestly hope it's a train wreck because watching people get constantly burned by giving nuBlizz money is the real entertainment, to me at least.

Holy shit, wow this is bad. They didn't fucking learn anything from Warcraft 3 Reforged?

remasters will continue until morale improves!

I already heard that for d3, and we all know how that turned out...

Fuck this, sticking with my 20 year old copy of d2 and lod. Still got the CD keys written down and everything

CD keys still require battle.net access and they'll make you have a B.net account if you try and play online. Mind you Both Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2 were still being sold in stores as new the same year Reforged came out.

The only incarnations of blizzard's classics that don't require battle.net fuckery are the Playstation copies of Diablo 1 and the n64 copies of Starcraft 64.

Diablo 3 doesn't count because it was made when Blizzard gave up.

So I've been in touch with the speds going on about the Diablo 2 Remaster censorship, and, it seems, the changes go well beyond making the Amazon look like she should be smashing up a Gamestop.

Almost all of the footage has shown that all the female characters have been covered up, changed, or altered. Equally telling, however, is that they've changed the monsters. For the uninitiated, Diablo II has a lot of female monsters, and they're usually pretty creepy looking, but also wear very little clothing and the effect tends to actually make them more disturbing visually. It's a well-known horror trope, and was used rather famously by the Nurses in Silent Hill 2, for example.

For reasons known only to Blizzard, they've begun censoring these, including the Act 1 boss and the first major boss of Act 1.

These bits of censorship are telling, because like the WC3 Remaster, they really give you an idea of where they're going to be going with this "remaster" - namely, that they are going to do this with basically every conceivably attractive female character or enemy in the game. Think of how much time and money is being spent on doing this shit, hiring teams of modelers specifically to cover up a pixelated bit of boobage here or an ass cheek there on a character barely 64 pixels tall.

That Blizzard is going to fuck this remaster up to competition standards is a bygone conclusion; the censorship itself just gives us our first taste of how up they're going to fuck.
