Yeah, I was a little disappointed that the conversation you had with Prava at the end of the first expansion went nowhere. I expected Mephisto to do something with the weakened and divided Cathedral.
Why would he? the Zakarum Faith is directly opposed to The Church of Light, which was created by Inarius a long time ago (a LONG time ago), the Religion around Akarat is all about inner light and shit, not relying on godly Angels, it doesn't worship any Gods at all, beyond revering Akarat's teachings (and getting horrifically corrupted by Mephisto)

Akarat showing up would lead to direct bloodshed and he'd have to drop his facade if he interacted with The Church of Light.

They recently lost their object of worship, and "Akarat" would be a prophet who mysteriously returned after dying centuries ago - a good replacement. They were willing to accept Urivar as their spiritual leader. Say what you want about Mephisto, he sure is more charismatic than Urivar.

funny enough the Zakarum Faith instantly knew Akarat was Sussy Baka, and basically sent someone to follow him around and try and kill him if he is infact, a demon in disguise, ya gotta give it to them, they got fooled once, and they did not want to get fooled again, sure the last time it was basically just their Pope who got Demon'd, but they took no chances.

and again, the Church of Light's core tenant is that humans are shitty and need to try and be like Angels, Akarat's teachings are very much the direct inverse, they are heretical to each other

I've been on a Diablo binge lately and Diablo 1 and 2 have been good despite me liking both games for disparate reasons; 1 has the best environment and the best use of tension while 2 has the better narrative and gameplay loop. Diablo 3, I'm still in Act 1 right now granted, has been just fucking unbearable to sit through. That slavic or filipino guy I see rage baiting in the ARC raiders thread is just wrong.

Chris Metzen writes like a fucking twelve year old who just watched Sword Art Online; the constant exposition dumps during boss fights, the characters explaining their motivations and allegiances like the viewers are children, the embarrassing melodrama told through cringe worthy in game animations, and Metzen's "that would be so cool" train of thought whenever he comes up with plot points. I don't know if this guy is a weeaboo or if he just phoned this project in for money, but regardless, the story has been the worst part.

I've also yet to see my health fall below even half my bar as I'm playing. I'm of the belief that you HAVE to play on max level to get any enjoyment out of this game.

He also wrote WarCraft III, you know.

This is why 4 , such as it is, is lauded for its story over 3, because it isn't nearly as fucking shitty, and brings the characters back down to earth a bit, though by the end of Lord of Hatred, Protag is basically the coolest most heroic character to ever live in this series, because they had absolutely no reason to persevere and everything went fucking wrong, and still they got the BIG fucking W by yeeting Mephisto to the Void, even if no one but Tyrael will ever know or really care.

even if no one but Tyrael will ever know or really care.

Thats why 4 works for me. All these characters we meet and (mostly) care about have horrible things happen to them, we fight back against the corruption and death of humanity, we see the cosmic struggle of the creator of humanity's inability to change her innate evil nature... and nobody cares but us. The fragile, slowly rotting realm of humanity exists for a few more years, perhaps, and the only one who understands or cares about what we went through isn't even human by nature. Not to mention every single side quest basically results in us making things worse for individuals but preventing larger tragedies (potentially).

It offsets the power fantasy of kill crushing demons to death in a way that keeps it fresh versus d2 letting you square up with all the primes or d3 being.... whatever the fuck d3 was. Imagine d3 trying to handle Lorath's death, with exposition dumps and a talk talk talk quest and a monologue about the games themes. D4? Dude gets axed, we avenge him, and Tyrael goes 'we don't have time to grieve right now, help me bury him we have shit to do'. That simple grave hits infinitely harder than dumbass Leah getting got.

Plus d4 gets the fuck out of its own way after the plot resolves and isn't trying to pretend its anything but a glorious loot treadmill now that I'm into torment difficulties.

Yea, it perfectly sums up the setting, which is always bitter victory for man, the cost of which is essentially everything, and the results are temporary, its the quintessential raging against the dying of the light, Lord of Hatred did it particularly well, with the entire last act having you rummage through the OG Horadrim's little rooms, its restated the obvious truth.. Tyrael found these men, got them to band together, and ultimately doomed each and everyone of them to fighting against the Primes (and in Kulle's case, being attacked by his own people for being too ahead of the curve) they couldn't highlight it harder with Tyrael himself handing off the Stones to Kulle, the man who would INVENT A WAY TO BIND PRIME EVILS and his reward is to be stricken from his order, his name stricken from history, and be forever maligned despite being totally correct, same with Jerrad Cain and Tal Rasha, all essentially lead like a pide piper by Tyrael to their doom.. for His people's War, and its still the most just outcome.

all while Tyrael stands beside Lorath, a man who Tyrael shaped the entire life of, and after this moment, would go and die just like all the rest, its very tragic and does a great job at laying out the broader themes of the Diablo setting, none of the settings hero's are really remembered, The Horadrim are treated like myth, Uldyssian was forgotten by everyone except his own brother and Rathma, the D1, D2 Hero's either died horribly after corruption or quietly, as unknowns, the D3 Protag likely was met with a fate similar to Uldyssian, too powerful to live, and the D4 Protag is a nobody, they start a nobody, and end a nobody, despite all you accomplish, no one will know you even did anything, except the human looking, but inhuman acting, Tyrael, who won't even shed a tear for Lorath's death.

Edit*, I believe Lilith acheived the impossible in the very end and changed her nature, and this likely made her no longer a true demon, and probably died forever because of it.

Alright, I’ve completed Diablo 3 and Reaper of Souls and I’m moving on to Diablo 4. I’ll do some cathartic sperg about 3 some time later in the general thread.

I’ve been playing it for a while and I’m not sure how far I am now, but so far I’ve been mixed on the story because the writer definitely knows how to world build, exposit, and maintain atmospheric consistency, but they’re really faltering in character pacing and development. Character deaths come abruptly with little development or if there is, post mortem which robs a lot of death scenes of climactic emotional payoff. Neyrelle’s mother’s death comes very abruptly through weak pacing of her character where her only sole motivation for serving Lilith was knowledge… with no elaboration of what that knowledge is or why she’s so interested in it.

Vigo betrays his personal ideals… over a bracelet. His repentance is done off screen with little elaboration of him as a character. His death also comes abruptly as a boss gimmick. When he died, I just thought in the back of my mind “man, how much better would this have been if he was a companion in that big armor for the duration of the dungeon while Neyrelle bantered back and forth between each other?”

I’m also not really clear why Neyrelle needs to be a main character in this story. She’s a prodigal child who is deliberately putting herself in the line of danger and getting obnoxiously huffy with me when I ask her to stay put. She barely has a personality aside from curiosity I guess and angst. The voice actress, bless her damn heart, is desperately trying to make the character interesting, but she has nothing to work with.

I mean it’s so far been miles better than Diablo 3, but it’s also frustrating me a little bit because pacing and characterization is a big problem for me. I have hope it’ll get better.

No one ever figured that one out. Best to assume they needed a female chink with a stubby arm to tick off the diversity checklist.

They must be saving Heaven for the last expansion. They're really dragging this shit out.
