Destiny 2: Every End is a New Beginning

I'm sure I've run into some of you in the Crucible during my on-again-off-again relationship with Destiny. The times we had were fun, Guardian. Might not have been perfect, but just in the moment, it was fun.
:semperfidelis:

Fuck everything that is Modern Bungie. May none of them find employment after Sony cuts them all and sits on their IPs until Destiny 3 comes out as a PS7 exclusive. I hope Pete goes out like Paul Walker in one of those shitty cars of his.

I joke but Bungie said they don't have the files anymore so it's impossible to recover and re-release sunset content from raids to planets
i remember some such kerfuffle, went before some big american court even iirc.
shit doesnt feel real, i would at this very second play d2 if it wasnt such shit with all the deleted content and i could just load it for sp without the live service turd coating. the idea that the game i played is now forever gone refuses to settle in front of the visible install files.

maybe it will be reverse engineered in a decade or so, for so much level design, modeling, and animation work to just be gone is utterly silly.
hell, maybe ww3 doesnt hit for a while yet and we are standing on the cusp of ai reverse engineering

Anyone remember the official Destiny Xitter post on April 1st of 2026, in which they said their currently-released major DLC was going to be their last? I'm seriously wondering if that was a Mandela Effect mis-remembrance on my part, because I do remember seeing it and immediately recognizing it for what it was: a Schrodinger's Cat post for if Sony continues to allow development, and then Bungie plays it off as just another April Fools joke. And if not, just act like it was a sincere forewarning. If it was real, it's since been deleted, and I still can't find any surviving screenshots.

Why the fuck would you end development on a reasonably successful live service game with established whales? 10-20 year old live games are low cost money printers if managed correctly.

the beast needs a new host

man i remember when peter dinklage was in this game, what a waste of a franchise rip stupid

Destiny is a reptitive game with shit lore that essentially breaks down to a coop leveling experience that are far exceeded by other coop games like Deep rock galactic.

Rip in shit bungie. You burned out on halo.

I have played destiny franchise from day 1 and probably spent like $500 on every expansions and sequel....

It was a magical game......that lacked all substance.....and then it got bloated.

I had some really good times in D2. I dumped way too much money into seasons and I honestly didn't even like the seasonal model, I just loved the game. The environment art was beautiful (Nessus was probably my favorite) and the gunplay felt great. I met so many fun randos in Crimson Days, too. RIP.

Of all the threads I frequent, the last one I expected to get a feature from Dear Sneeder himself was this one. Has Jersh ever commented on playing before, or is he just highlighting and enjoying another AAA shitshow?

Anyway, I knew that whatever news was coming couldn't be good if they were being completely radio silent for this long, but I didn't expect it to be cataclysmically "we're fucking done" bad. The fact that Bungie thinks that of their two games currently released, the one from the niche genre with a flopped launch and little population was the one they deemed worth putting all their time and effort into is utterly retarded. I seriously cannot fathom the logic here.

For those playing along at home, I would like to point out that not only could Bungie not keep to their new schedule for even a single year (major expansions every six months, free updates in between), the new plan was such a horrendous shitshow that they killed off the entire game rather than try for one more year. They were literally just starting to set up a new multi-year storyline, and now that's all tossed out the window. No story, no answers, fuck you for wanting more.

I've been on this ride for thirteen years now, ever since the first ARG that announced Destiny was even a thing (and I have the Alpha Lupi emblem in D1 to prove it). I've cut Bungie a huge amount of slack over that time because I could always see the potential there, and even when the game wasn't in a great place, it was still fun to play. Hell, there are many things that I should have been more upset over at the time. But I'm at the end of my rope here, no more defense. Not only are they saying it's dead, they're not even going to try to fix it. They're just giving up and telling me I was stupid for getting invested in the first place.

If I wanted to huff copium, I'd say that maybe this means they're in the process of planning out a full sequel, something that the community has seen the need for for years now. But given the article above, I guess that's not happening anytime soon.

So fuck you Bungie, I hope Marathon keeps failing and Sony shuts you down. You had a series with great potential and you kept fucking it up over and over again. Hope your trannies enjoy the unemployment line.

Now that my venting's out of the way, I guess I'll give thoughts about what this last update has on offer, which I'll drop in a spoiler box for people who don't care.
  • The only story is going to be "small character beats," so not a lot substantial there. Not like that's much of a surprise, given the free updates were never originally going to be that huge story-wise, but still. I doubt we'll see any hints of what we could have seen from Shattered Cycle or The Alchemist, or anything major at all.
  • The Director is back, but the Portal isn't really killed off. Not surprised by this either; as much as I'd like it gone for good, there's simply no point in putting forth any more development time on it. Better to just minimize its existence, I guess.
  • At least Pantheon 2.0 is going to be permanent, and the preview image suggests that vaulted raid bosses are indeed making a comeback, so I can't complain there. Curious what all the different activity versions are going to be.
  • They already talked about tiered dungeon and raid loot, but no word yet on how exactly it will function, aside from their earlier confirmation that old raids won't get feats. Crafted weapons will have a path to upgrade to tier 5. Destination gear will also become tiered and gain armor set bonuses, and new Distortion events will add extra challenge to destination activities (more on that in the future).
  • A bunch of sandbox updates, like filling out the remaining Light subclasses with their fourth aspects, void hunters getting an actual melee ability, a new stasis and strand grenade, and other reworks. Exotic armor autoupgraded to tier 5 stats (why didn't it drop like this to begin with), a few exotic armors getting reworks, and a variety of exotic weapon catalysts added with some extra tuning. Better late than never.
  • Various Portal updates, presumably to simplify all the ridiculous options and modifiers so you can just pick an activity and go. Again, it's too late to remove it entirely, but if it's going to stay, then making it less awful is the best we can hope for. Rewards are classified by activity type instead of all of them sharing the same loot pool. Onslaught and Crawl activities return to escalating difficulty, with tweaks to make them flow better.
  • Crucible events aren't being killed off like they were in D1 when D2 came along, with Iron Banner returning every four weeks and Trials available on all other weekends. A few new modes, Heavy Metal gets the Cabal Walker and a new map, and Competitive gets a new armor set and tiered weapons. Hey, at least it's not totally dead.
  • Gambit...still exists! Nothing major aside from a new armor set and reprised tiered weapons.
  • Seasonal events, however, are over. Guardian Games, Solstice, Festival of the Lost, and the Dawning are no more. A few of their weapons will still be available through a Monument of Triumph vendor, and ornament sets can still be acquired. RIP to some fun activities over the years, though.
  • I can't say I'm surprised that they're still keeping Silver purchases in the game; after all, you can still buy Silver in D1 all these years later. However, items for sale for Bright Dust will change out daily, so it should be easier to get the items you're looking for over time. In addition, Bright Engram focusing will give you an item you don't already have from a specific category for a Bright Dust fee, so hopefully that will also help knock things out (although it would be nice if they made that the default state of Bright Engrams).
  • The rewards pass sounds huge, presumably including a lot of cosmetics they were originally going to sell but now there's really no point. Maybe even some stuff planned for a later expansion. Well, more stuff to grind, I guess.
  • Full exotic armor transmog is also a welcome change, so now you can finally equip a full armor set without having to either work around an exotic or forgo it entirely. Especially big for exotic class items.
  • And finally, I can't believe it took nearly a decade, but they finally broke the In Case of Emergency panel over the "bring back SRL" button. If the game weren't being put on life support in the near future, I'd be excited, but as it is I'm just kind of apathetic. It sure will be fun for all of a couple weeks until everyone stops playing.
I won't lie, for a last content update, it is bringing a lot of good stuff. But why is it that Bungie only seems to manage to deliver when their backs are against the wall? Why couldn't we get this sort of stuff regularly, or even a fraction of it? Was it really necessary to string everyone along for months before finally dropping the bombshell that the game's dead? Couldn't you just, I dunno, keep working on it? Fucking hell.

Well, one more jaunt around the Solar System is in my future, I guess. Ain't no way I'm picking up Marathon, though.

Honestly this getting highlighted is surprising. But i legit don't see the appeal of it. Didn't help the gunplay was floaty and slow as shit. Felt like you didn't even control the character you were playing as.

The fact they peaked all the way back in 1996 is depressing af.

There's still time for the ultimate oxymoron. The final retarded cool kids club, the biggest one yet, should be "Unemployed at Bungie". I want a fucking TWAB about it.
