Judging by the articles I found written by staff at hospitals which have transgender youth programmes, relatively easy - although some skip the puberty blockers altogether and start kids as young as 12 on cross-sex hormones. Puberty blockers at the onset of puberty followed by cross sex hormones at age 16 is the currently recommended course of action.

Many within the trans industry argue that the recommendations should lower the age at which cross sex hormones are started because"16 is late to begin puberty".

So parents are being actively encouraged to actively affirm their child's target gender prior to puberty and then to suppress puberty. Neither of these are neutral actions to give a kid space to decide for themselves. They're more like a reverse form of conversion therapy because the idea that they are their target gender is constantly being reinforced from early childhood.

regardless what any of you believe about me or any other transgender people, it is the kids who go to their parents and tell them that they have the wrong sex for their genders. the parents not only don't force it on their kids, the majority of them resist what the kids are telling them. if my parents had accepted that and i had been put on puberty blockers at 11 and estrogen at 16, my life would not have been the hell that it has been. the worst thing for a gender dysphoria sufferer is to be forced into a gender role that is contrary to their instincts.

The problem is that the research doesn't support this course of action. Research produced by your own side shows that the majority of "gender non-conforming" kids identify as the gender they were assigned at birth by their mid-teens. So you're advocating a course of action for the group as a whole which will benefit the minority and may damage the majority - especially if you add in the recommendation that children be socialised as their expressed gender. All you are doing is changing who is going to be raised as the "wrong" gender from trans kids to cis kids.

Ironically, the argument for relaxing standards for adults was that the majority will not regret their decision to transition and should not be held back because it will be a damaging process for a minority. So on the one hand you're arguing for what benefits the majority when it comes to adults capable of informed consent and on the other you're arguing for what benefits the minority when it comes to kids who cannot give informed consent.

Gender roles and gender expression are not the same thing - you of all people should know that. You can be trans and reject the stereotypical roles of your target gender just as you can be cis and reject the stereotypical roles of your natal gender.

it seems to me that gender roles are the societal standards contrived in accordance with the rigid hetero-normative sex/gender binary and gender expression is how the individual presents their gender identity to the world.
gender identity and sexual preferences are not the same thing either. i'm not homosexual. my penis wants to do what penises do, but in my mind's eye, i'm the one getting laid by a man, so i seek a man with a vagina.

i leave those sorts of decisions about standards of care to the doctors and am only speaking from my own experience and the personal narratives that were shared with me. the majority of us with chronic acute GD know there's something wrong when we're very young and have a pretty good handle on what it is by the time we're starting our teens. by the time the blockers are started, the kids will have pretty well convinced themselves, their parents and their doctors that it's the right thing to do. this documentary illustrates that pretty well.

for us who have a clear medical need for the hormones have a lot of concerns about all the gender queers suddenly deciding they want to do it for other reasons than the need to manage the symptoms of GD. personally, i think any adult should be able to modify their bodies any way they choose without stigma.

I do too - provided they pay for it themselves and accept the consequences.

I get why you think you would have been happier had puberty blockers and hormones been available to you in your youth, but you're looking through rose coloured glasses. Puberty blockers would have just kept you a physically immature male, with all of the social problems that entailed. Hormones would have made you a guy with boobs and an immature set of male genitalia, in the 1960s.

You would have been an outcast with both men and women, finding refuge only in fringe society. And that's not even taking into account just how little we knew about hormones at the time you were an adolescent. A time when DES was still being prescribed and oral contraceptives contained levels of hormones which would make a modern endocrinologist blanch.

There is nothing wrong with assuming that a child with an age in the single digits is not capable of making an informed decision about a set of medical actions that will have life-long consequences. Children don't think about the future that way because their brains are undeveloped. No one is saying a child can't believe he/she is the wrong gender. No one is saying that all legitimately dysphoric people had pushy stage parents who brainwashed them into believing they were meant to be another gender. What we're saying is that there are some crazy people out there pushing their children into this in order to get attention, and since that can't be ruled out as a contributing factor, medical intervention to change the gender of a child is wrong and should not be legal. Debi Jackson is the transtrender version of Lacey Spears. Lacey is in prison for murdering her son. If she hadn't killed him while using salt to poison him and make him ill, she'd probably still be blogging about his illness for pity points.
 
Why can't kids be fucking kids and figure out what they are when they're old enough and not have any kind of political bullshit pushed on them?
