Blind people are still part of the hearing world and are linguistically connected to it since they are still able to listen and speak and can use screen readers and braille to maintain communication. Deaf people are excluded from spoken language. That's why there's a Deaf culture with its own language/art/history and not a blind culture, and why Deafblind people are more likely to hang out with Deaf people than just blind people.

Despite having been deaf, sorry I mean Deaf, for all of my life, I admit I've never felt like I belong in the Deaf community, nor do I fully understand some certain aspects of it. The notion of denying deafness as a form of disability is especially baffling. I completely get -- and agree -- that just because you're unable to hear doesn't mean you're incapable of leading independent lives, earning college degrees, holding down jobs, raising families, etc. But to outright deny a physical disability that significantly impacts your everyday life, regardless of your capability for independent living, as such? That's like saying Phil/ADF is a true and honest, perfectly healthy, and beautiful woman, despite obviously being a severely mentally ill man who's mutilated his body to oblivion.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I've known a few hearing people who actually believe in the whole "deafness isn't disability" ideology, and sadly I'm related to one such person. As if Deaf people pushing hard on their ideology wasn't bad enough, imagine getting laughed at when you're in an argument with (hearing and able-bodied) somebody, and you bring up the topic of your being disabled. Fuck you for not seeing my disability as such.

Not going to powerlevel here, but I'm glad I've left the Deaf community years ago (although for reasons mostly unrelated to its ideology,) and I rarely interact with that community nowadays. This thread only vindicates my decision to do so. :heart-empty:

Content wise you are fine imo. Sorry for the delay, let me just go over a few small details. The content you have under the first spoiler is good and should be visible at all times imo, i'd personally remove the spoiler there. Notable deaf people improved the OP considerably, good job. Besides that, just a few formatting issues that are a bit hard to explain, changing a few font sizes and etc. If you don't mind, @emspex will format it and imo the thread is ready to go, just needs one more approval from another staff.
 
This community is quite odd to me because I know a few people who have severe hearing loss, one doesn't know ASL so you have to scream at her constantly or she can't hear. Another is upset because they are starting to loose more hearing and worry they won't be able to listen to music anymore. In what way does this not sound like a disability? Surely anything that impedes your ability to interact with the average person in society is a disability, no?
I get not wanting to feel weird and wanting to be independant but at some point you have to acknowledge the things you aren't physically able to do
 
People who are “hearing impaired” at all are considered disabled under the Americans with Disabilities Act, so they are disabled under the letter of the law.

I have epilepsy and I’m disabled. Doesn’t bother my ass. These fags need to come to grips with the notion that being disabled doesn’t mean you can’t function in society.
 
So, they hate being called disabled. These people need SJWs in their life to enable them. "Oh, you're deaf? Well that's nothing, I diagnosed myself with PTSD and Bipolar, I'm far, far more disabled than you are."

Well... New York (Archived), California (Archived), Utah, New Hampshire (Archived) and Louisiana already passed bills to replace "hearing impaired" to "d/Deaf" and eventually, they'll probably change the way Americans with Disabilities Act refer to us.

But... that's the very nature of superiority. If I can hear and you can't, then I'm by definition - superior to you.
 
At long last a Deaf thread! PAH!

I took ASL as my foreign language in high school. I started to get an idea about things being a little weird when no small amount of the curriculum was about how the ears worked (and why cochlear implants suck).
This was like twenty years ago or so, and even then the idea of "Deaf isn't a disability because fuck you that's why" seemed like it was a pretty standard idea.

The class started to lose steam in the second year and she kept tagging in the teacher who handled the Deaf kids, and we'd usually just end up watching movies that had some form of sign language, like Congo because Amy good gorilla. I forget if she used ASL or SEE though.

I don't know if it's just Florida Deaf (obviously destined to surpass any more common Deaf) but I got the impression that what's used on the street to communicate wasn't really a single strict system of ASL or SEE, but a pidgin of the two with some regional odds and ends credited usually to the nearest Deaf school.

I might be misremembering but I recall something about ASL being the master race and SEE being looked down on.

Are other Deaf communities weird like that? Is it just a USA thing? Is ASL growing out of France to blame?
 
I can empathize with a lot of Deaf folks about not wanting to be defined by what they lack. it must suck if people look at you and think only about what you can't do. I don't blame them or think they're odd for wanting people to look at them for what they have (culture, language, etc) instead of what they don't have.

well yeah, ASL is a complete language with its own grammar. SEE just uses english grammar. it would be like if I went to japan or something and tried using japanese words with english grammar. I might be understood, but whatever i said would be weird and it wouldn't be artful
 
Ugh, yeah this thing is insane. You've got people who got a bad draw in one particular aspect of life: They can't hear. Because of what is essentially similar to buyer's remorse, they want to say they're just different, not disabled. (You don't have the typically present ability to hear, so yeah, you're disabled).

I guess too many people around them went along with this for long enough for it to get a foothold? Plus they've essentially got a secret language, and are somewhat cut out of everyone else's conversations. So it makes sense that they're more seperate. However, if we ever have a way to cure deafness these idiots are going to be a big loud problem. You can do everything a deaf person can do if you can hear.

And I have horrible vision. Not bad enough to be blind, but I can't legally drive without correction. Without my correction, I am disabled. I have the disability of terrible vision. I'm glad the blind and poorly sighted people of the past didn't fight to prevent people like me from being able to live normal lives so we could embrace our status as Blind.

So while I do have sympathy for these people, also, fuck them for making a deaf kid have a harder life than it already is because of their stupid cool kids club.
 
Back when I worked EMS we had a large, world renowned, school for the Deaf in my district. It was by far the scariest most horrifying place I have ever encountered. (And I’ve seen some horrors!) We actually wanted to try and get at least our officers trained in sign language. Enough to facilitate EMS and Medical Emergencies. The school fought us in ways that you would not believe. They took steps to insure that the kids only communication with the outside hearing world was exclusively through them and their “teachers”. It didn’t take us long to work out that yes the place was in fact a cult. A really scary one. Conversations with Law Enforcement and CPS went knowhere. They were just as frustrated as us. The place was politically protected.

Just goes to show that it doesn't matter if you're deaf, blind, black, white, male, female, disabled or perfectly abled, we all have one thing in common:

A tendency to be giant assholes.
