I am going to necro this thread because I'm curious: How many of you actually went for the 7 Day Survivor achievement for OG Dead Rising? I'm gonna go for it soon, my xbox is getting on in the years and I want to do this while I can. This is going to take me 14 hours of gaming non-stop, at the very least, and that's if I am not going to make any mistakes(VERY optimistic). Let me know what your experience has been, I want to go in prepared.

In the meantime, I am doing my other achievements as warmup and to finally 100% the game. Doing the Tour Guide achievement, and now Saint, it reminded me how fucking stupid the AI in this game is. I'm fully leveled up as of today and I have no problem fending off psychopaths and zombies, but good lord escorting these chucklefucks and making it back to the saferoom on time(or without one of them accidentally bumping into a zombie and letting it kill them like a bitch) is the real challenge. Thank fuck they made the AI miles better in later titles.

Other than that, I am very much enjoying my time, and silently dreading putting away an entire day, possibly several, to get this one achievement. Still, I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy the game, and boy is this one good. I forgot how good Capcom fans had it back then, especially since this came out right after RE4. In a way, you could tell Capcom would become modern day crapcom after Dead Rising 4.

I got Zombie Genocide but never the 7day
iirc from back in the day there was suggestions that you should probably put a big fan blowing through your 360 because the fans can sometimes shit out if you do something crazy like leave it running a game for seven days straight

The early models had a tendency to overheat and die, yes. I got the models that came after that and it's been going strong for over 10 years now, hence why I want to do this right now in case that luck is about to run out.
Shame the thermal paste on this Xbox was used up years ago, nowdays I wouldn't trust anyone to open it up and I don't have a workshop or tools in my current home, sadly. Fan it is then, probably.

it's been my goto solution when I've had a laptop's cooling system die
it's not an elegant one but it works

I've done 7 Day Survivor on both Xbox One and PC, only made it to day 5 on Xbox 360 because that's as far as I could get when I was younger. So I'll try and give some advice as someone who's gone over this game more times than I can count:

1) Like @XYZpdq Jr. and you yourself suggested, having a fan blowing on the 360 is a must-have for doing this. I was even having trouble with this issue of the console overheating even back when my 360 was only a few years old, so it's probably going to be even more important now.

2) Avoid damage and using healing items as much as possible. It's best to conserve your resources to get a good start, but this is just a good general rule. Make a beeline for the 3 health magazines around the mall to help maximize your amount of healing for the coming hours; the first is in the bookstore "The Sinister Read" across from the security room entrance into Entrance Plaza on the 2nd floor, the second is in the bookstore "Sir Book-a-Lot" on the 2nd floor of Wonderland Plaza where you find Shinji and Yuu in 72 Hour Mode, the third is in the storage closet next to Crislip's Home Saloon (where you fight Cliff) in North Plaza. These will help you draw out the use of your resources and extend your time significantly further than you would without them, they are instrumental to reaching Day 7.

3) If you have the Real Mega Buster from doing Zombie Genocider, as you mentioned doing achievement hunting, always keep it on hand to help minimize damage and deal large amounts back to anything you come across.

4) Maximize your food. Find a place nearby to hole up in that's safe from any threats and dump any surplus food near you and eat when necessary-- if you find any food or any that killed survivors drop in the area you're in and are willing to take a risk, go get it and bring it back to your hoard if your inventory is full. I recommend only eating on your last block of health as your life bar is about to be fully drained in order to get the most out of your healing items.

5) Beware of crashes. The Xbox 360 version is especially included in this, whether it be overheating or other factors. There is a notorious guaranteed crash in the Food Court during Day 5 (Day 4 xx Hours xx Minutes) that will fuck you over if you forget, I'm unsure if this crash was fixed in the remaster so just avoid it altogether during that time if anyone is playing on those platforms. Keep this in mind while you play, you may be pretty tired from boredom by this point in the run.

6) Find something to preoccupy yourself with minimal focus. Infinity Mode is a waiting game and food hoarding simulator, it's best to find something to listen to or watch while you wait to use your food as it will get very monotonous and boring quite fast. Don't make the same mistake I made years ago where I was about 3 days in and went to do something that took all my focus away from the game and came back to find Frank dead on the ground.

That's about everything I can think of off the top of my head. I'm happy to answer any questions or clarify anything if needed, and hopefully my shoddy little guide proves useful to anyone else willing to subject themselves to this challenge.

Very late but I did it. The achievement wasn't hard, it was just boring, god so boring. Didn't help that I got only a few hours of sleep that day so I was constantly falling asleep, but at least my Xbox didn't die. Honestly, achievements like "Saint", "Frank The Pimp", "Transimissionary" or "Zombie Genocider" were way worse. Thanks for reminding me about the Day 5 Food Court crash, might have saved my run.

I'm already doing Dead Rising 2, which I have only 50% of the achievements for whatever reason. I guess since I spend most of my time with Off The Record/Dead Rising 3 I didn't bother playing this one so much. This is going much smoother than DR1(minus grindy achievements like "Big Spender" that has you gamble for several real hours at the big slot machine in Slot Ranch Casino with three Gambling magazines) since the game is much easier(and since I still have some muscle memory as far as Zombrex/Combo Weapon locations and Psychopath strategies). Very much enjoying this game, can't wait to move on to the rest, altho I will sadly have to pass up on the online achievements for obvious reasons. Shame, TIR was really fun, stupid that there is no offline option.

This is how we can win. Chop til you drop 2.

The original wasnt that bad when you go into it knowing it will be completely its own thing and not the original. I was in a big DR phase back in the day so I bought Chop until you Drop (cant recall if it was expensive or not) and I remember having a good time...mostly because I expected RE4 Dead Rising edition. It has many familiar guns and the melee weapons feel kind of awkward to use but its nothing you cant get used to.

The game also offers an unique what if by having original zombie animals...one of which is a parrot that drops grenades iirc...look, it was an admitingly somehow even weirder version of DR 1 but it doesnt mean it wasnt enjoyable on its own way. It is a time capsule of the unique state that the Wii was where trying to have PS3/Xbox360 games on it involved either heavy downgrading of graphics and features or a completely version of the game that offers unique experimental insight of an existing experience.

Here is something interesting I found the other day: It's been believed for years that DR2 removed the feature of making most survivors undead when they get mauled by zombies, as they simply drop dead when they get swiped in the game. Well, the feature IS in the game still...in one location only.
If you bring a certain set of survivors(most, but not all) over to the area right outside SporTrance in Royal Flush Plaza, you will be met with a DR1 styled cutscene of them being mauled alive if they get surrounded and die to a zombie there, and then they will come back as a zombie. This is a VERY buggy feature, which makes me think they either never finished it and left it in by accident or scrapped it at some point. It is unconfirmed if this works in OTR, and it should be noted that this triggers a CUTSCENE in DR2, where as in DR1 when a survivor became undead it triggered an in-game cinematic. The main difference is that the latter can happen anywhere naturally, where as the need to trigger proper cutscenes limits the area this can happen to one location in DR2, as each survivor has to have a separate hand crafted cutscene done just for them. Multiply the amount of survivors by possible locations the game has and you can see just how stupid this decision was, and why this feature was likely cut. There is also reports of this potentially happening by Dark Bean(coffee shop right outside Royal Flush Safehouse) but I cannot find any evidence for it.
There IS evidence this might be possible, however. In DR1, if you gave a gun to a survivor and they were surrounded by zombies, sometimes they would blow their brains out and trigger a similar in-game cutscene. There is at least two survivors that still have this cutscene in DR2(the black couple you find outside Dark Bean, where those cutscenes take place) but it is proper cut content and cannot be triggered in any way.
Very interesting to see remnants of cut content for the game, I am guessing the scrapped undead cutscenes when they interfered with coop play too much but done too much work to outright cut it, where as the suicides would have been cut for moralfagging reasons, or to avoid controversy(COD Black Ops similarly censored a suicide animation in multiplayer if one decides to commit suicide in last stand mode in multiplayer around that time). It's crazy there is so many detailed death scenes like this that 98% of the fanbase never seen before.

Anyways, did anyone here complete Zombie Genocide Master achievement in Dead Rising 2? It's harder than I thought, I already got Zombie Genocider 2(which has you kill 53,596 zombies) but the extra 12K or so really trips me up. I've tried ignoring all the cases and kill zombies for three days, not enough time. I tried doing the cases and then use the extra time from the last cases + overtime to finish the job, not enough time still and the sheer amount of zombies killed softlocked me at the loading screen for Yucatan at some point(never had this happen to me before). I figure I am going to do the cases again but ignore absolutely everything other than wilted flower + scoops with zombrex, or just collect zombrex in locations that spawn them. I went all autistic for this and got a milestones sheet written up, to see if I am on track for getting this achievement. Problem is that your average playthru takes about 6-8 hours of real time to complete, and I can't just spare an entire day to mowing down zombies in a red SUV.

That suicide one is still in the game but its used on a particular npc.

Andy will commit suicide with his shotgun if Chuck gets too far away from him after starting a conversation and before the conversation is finished. This will also happen in co-op, Andy will immediately commit suicide if one of the two Chucks is not near him.
That's really weird though does that death animation play on any npc or just those 3?

@30+GameOvers I did it on the PS3 release at the time, I think I had to split my time between keeping the main story going and then spending the rest of the time driving up and down the one outside area (Silver Strip?). It was much more tedious than the achievement in 1 somehow.

It really is, at the end of Zombie Genocider 1 you still have time to fuck around and get a whole bunch of other achievements, here it seems every single minute matters. My mistake for taking time to fuck around and build a whole bunch of combo weapons/killed psychos(for their weapons) in case I ever needed to use them
Thank goodness for the milestone sheet letting me know if I am on track. I found that going one full lap in a SUV around the Strip and then building a Slicycle(Unlocked after killing Leon, extremely easy and quick if you just run him over with the SUV) to make a second lap is the most efficient. Every lap decreases the density of zombies so resetting the area is key, however the Slicycle is so quick that a second lap to clean up any zombies you might have left behind is an easy way to double dip. Once gas zombies show up there is also much more zombies on the Strip, but like I said the game also becomes more prone to crashes so saving is key.
Shame they cut out the Protoman Blaster out of DR2 and only brought it back for OTR, would have been a neat little unlockable.

I'm curious if this something that just happens during gameplay or if they have a dedicated cutscene for it like with Lashawndra/Gordon. I still think those were done away with because they interfered with the co-op gameplay, imagine doing something with another person and then the game comes to a stop to show you a man blowing his brains out with a shotgun or a woman getting toppled and torn apart by zombies while screaming. Kinda puts a damper on the mood if you two are just fucking around by putting masks on zombies or spraying each other with mayo/ketchup or something(I can't be the only one who did this with their coop partner).

I wonder who approved and play-tested that particular achievement for 14 straight hours of play on a console prone to overheating and general hardware failure. I know dev kits are drastically different from stock consoles.

I don't even remember what the reward was, it might have been part of Arthur's outfit like his underwear or something, but it was the most underwhelming thing for the amount of time it took to do.

I believe achievements were very last minute. In the early 360 days, nobody really knew what to make of them, so you have shit like Quake 4 achievement for being the number one on global leaderboards. That's right, best player in the world, obviously not even 0.1% of people have this achievement, but that's the kind of mindset those early 360/PS3 titles had. For DR1 specifically we have leaked builds(thanks to Stipo360) that show that these achievements were done last minute, as was the Infinite Mode. I don't think there was much thought put into it, just "wouldn't it be cool if someone survived an entire week of ingame time in one sitting?" kind of thing. This achievement must have killed a lot of consoles.

I think Arthur's outfit is entirely unlocked thru in-game means, only the armor itself is given to you for the S ending I think. Boots are bought from as store, helmet is gotten from winning in a poker game and the mustache is just chilling in the barber shop in the Royal Flush Mall. Also, one of the unlockable outfits is the Dealer Outfit, which is also just chilling in Yucatan, so I don't know why they made that one of the locker room clothes instead of something unique. We know that there were a whole bunch of cut costumes from DR2 thanks to leaks, like the Megaman/Protoman outfit and a third Cowboy Outfit so that might have been a placeholder for one of these(before it got removed)
For 72K kills in DR2, you get squat. That's what I was referring to, it would be nice to get another super weapon like in DR1.

It happens in real time he shoots himself then falls off the slot machines he's standing on top of into the crowd of the zombies gathered around. I had it happen to me in co-op, didn't even realize that was the cause till just now when I had to look it up for this.

I thought as much but I didn't play the game for exactly 10 years now(looking at my achievement dates) so I didn't want to make assumptions. They had the resources and yet they didn't give us the suicide survivors back, with turned survivors being something of an afterthought(despite how much effort it took to make those animations). Very interesting artifacts of the development, I wish we had nearly as much info on early DR2 development and early builds as we have on Dead Rising 1.

I've got to say, I think Zombie Genocide Master is even worse than 7 Day Survivor. The latter was just boring, ZGM is a straight up speedrun tier achievement you need a proper guide and preparation for. I don't know how many times I've tried and failed it so far, I'm always a few thousand short by the end. Zombie Genocider 2 isn't the issue, but these last few kills are, I always run out of time.
Thanks to the milestone sheet, I know where I should be at any given point in time, at least, but even when I have a loss I figure I can always make it up. That's my problem, it just gets exponentionally worse. It's gotten to a point where I now started the game over and only save once I hit my quota, if I run out of time I start over from a previous segment. It's going pretty well so far but the achievement is unrelenting, even the start was pretty difficult with all the prep work having to be done at that stage. I've definitely spend more than 14 hours on this one alone for sure, considering a full playthru takes around 6 hours of real time each.

Still, even as tedious as this one achievement is, I can't help but love my time with the game. Dead Rising 2 and Off The Record might be my favorite open world games of all time. It's shocking to me that the industry didn't follow this blueprint but instead sucked off Ubisoft with their Far Cry and Assassin's Creed when making open world games moving forward. One thing that I think sets Dead Rising 2 apart from more modern games I noticed is that it knows that you want to have fun and it lets you HAVE IT without paying for more DLC or having you grind for it, while at the same time making the game difficult as well for newcomers. The time mechanic really is genius, the skill doesn't come from killing zombies themselves(as I've already written out) but with how much you can do in a certain time frame before you have to go back to the safe house for the next mission. The game also does atmosphere right: It knows when to have funny moments but at the end of the day, it is a dark story with an even darker setting, especially when you get to Case West. At the same time, Chuck can crossdress, wear funny masks and have them show up in cutscenes, not to mention all the dumb shit you can do during gameplay. Modern games just cannot do that, it's all super duper edgy and serious to the point the game isn't even pleasant to play(like Last of Us 2) or it's a complete marvel joss wheadon cringe fest where nothing matters and the stakes might not as well be there at all(too many to count, but nu-saints row comes to mind). I look at Dead Rising 2 and I see an artifact of a bygone era, I can only imagine what could have been if games were still like this but with all the new technical innovations. Even Dead Rising 3 and especially 4 fell of after this, so this really is the peak.
