Isn't this game just a troon-filled slop fest? Does it have any redeeming qualities?
In TYOL 2025, no. The core gameplay loop is extremely repetitive for the players, and a number of the Killers are simply stupid OP in an even moderately competent player's hands. The reason anyone even plays anyone other than the OP-tier killers is because they are so OP its boring after a while and Killer players will eventually get bored and try something else.
Survivors can't fight back and its very difficult to counter a killer's plans in any meaningful way, and once a Killer starts winning its usually a steam roll.
Like almost any long-running multiplayer game, the game suffers from "content bloat" where the devs keep trying to introduce new mechanics to keep players interested, but to make them "interstering" usually means making them OP and disruptng the current balance, to trying to balance "shiny new" content the next time they release "shiny new" content becomes a fucking nightmare.
They'd be much better off introducing new gameplay mechanics, but A) they'd fuck it up because its modern gamedevs and B) the player base would almost certainly immediately melt down over needing to learn/do new things.
That said, while the 'slugging' changes (Note for tourists: In DBD, the survivors have 3 health levels: Full, Injured, Downed. when they are downed they can just sort of crawl around the ground slowly like a
sluguntil they either recover [previously required another player using an item, or perk selection] or the killer comes to finish them. ) are needed and IMO overdue, the Tunneling* changes are overly punitive for Killers. I get what the devs are trying for, which is they don't want 1-2 players taken out 3 minutes into a 20 minute match, but that's definitely the wrong way to do it.
*Tourist Note: The core mechanic in DBD is for survivors to repair generators to open gates and escape. In the case of a survivor team getting utterly rocked, there is a 2nd mechanic where there is a randomly-spawned tunnel hatch somewhere on the level that opens when there is one remaining survivor.
So Tunneling means the Killers focusing on a suvivor to permakill/remove them from the match.
A game changing a few mechanics around is not a community feature you fucking autistic manchild retard
The game patch isn't. But the autistic tranny meltdowns it causes are.
DbD is fun when you're winning, but awful if you are losing, that is why the community is so toxic. I think the Friday the 13th game was more fun, but sadly it got screwed over by a lawsuit.
Friday 13th was better for the multiple survivor goal options. Every game had multiple ways for the survivors to win, the downside was you had to have a really bad Jason or a pro-teir team of survivors (or a Jason willing to play along/self-nerf) for most of them to be viable.
I felt the fast-travel mechanic for Jason was bullshit, I think a fixed-point mechanic with better "killer sense" would have made better game play where survivors would need to be stealthy vs. speed, instead of jason being able to warp around the map and just show up behind them because fuck you that's why.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre I think is a vast improvement over the usual Killer Asym, with multiple action paths for both Survivos and Killers via the "Grandpa" escalation mechanic.
V.H.S. is also good with that sort of mechanic, but I feel like that one is too survivor-biased; the monster either steamrolls the players off the bat or gets ground down the players.
No not really. Hasn't been fun since they nerfed keys and hatch years ago. Has survived this long by being one of the first asyms and constantly releasing new content even if it's sloptent.
lolwut.
Serial Killer themed, I'll grant you.
