It's a fascinating book I highly recommend people read, just for the morbid curiosity of it all.

I agree. Some of the anectdotes leave you totally shaking your head. The crazy bastard's luckiest score was when buying old clocks that had dials and numbers painted with radium and zinc oxide paint so that they would glow in the dark (and this is what set of the 'Radium Girls' scandal in the 1930s as the girls painting the watches were told to 'tip' their brushes with their lips) which no longer glowed due to the zinc pigment breaking down but were still radioactive AF, one of the clocks had left inside of it a FULL CAN of radium-infused paint! Presumably left inside the clock by a worker by accident and then sold all unknowingly.

This could have led to a mess the size of the Goiania incident where scrappers stole a radiation therapy machine for cancer treatments from an abandoned hospital in Goiania, Brazil and managed to crack into the radiation source, a capsule full of tasty blue glowing cobalt-60. They proceeded to share the magic glowing powder around friends and family, espcially little kids who were fascinated with it. Then sold the busted open machine on to ANOTHER scrapper. By the time people were falling over puking with huge weeping radiation burns all outside and inside them, under 10 people died outright but about 200 people were dangerously contaminated, thousands less so but still now at an elevated cancer risk, etc. by the time it was all found out.

Anyway, lucky that David knew what he had bought and danced a jig of joy, and promptly worked the radium into his reactor in the shed instead of ignorantly poisoning everyone and everything around him for miles and miles, so there's that at least.
