It's not really a matter of "if that was the case" since court documents have proven that to be the case. Steam doesn't pay anyone and never has paid anyone for exclusivity deals. They rely on their massive market share and trust it to continue working in their favor.

except if you look at the past drama it's less about steam removing stuff but the inconsistency in doing so. most people buying it are well aware what it involves since, you know, they're actually willing to pay money for it.
steam has zero issue with whatever stuff you can patch into your purchase from the outside, since that would mean they'd have to remove GTA and skyrim too because hot coffee and loverslab exist. however they can possibly be on the hook for hosting if it's already in the game, so it's down to the publisher not being retarded and break the terms of service, which even the dumbest consoomer is able to understand.

You realize that Steam didn't use to allow smut for most of its existence? Back when they built this gigantic market share that they now have? It's only been a few years straight up porn games have been allowed on Steam. If they were banned, well, Steam would still retain about 99% of its customers. Even now people into eroge know they have to skirt around the rules while dealing with Valve, downloading patches from 3rd party sites, only having a limited selection etc. This type of info is always the top-voted in the Steam reviews. No one would be shocked if Valve decided to revert its policy on porn games. They have the option of guaranteeing they stay in business, turn a profit, and have funding for their next game, their employees get to keep feeding their families, and in return, they have to whore out a bit. It sucks, but we live in reality, not some utopia where you can just be a perfect saint all the time.

My exception would be people who ran a kickscammer and got their dev spending paid for up front and then whore out in what is probably breach of contract, but that's not most of their exclusives.

Anyway, any decent game getting released there as an exclusive is bleeding the beast to death, as they aren't making the money back from these things.

And the reason Steam works, thanks to Gay Ben, is it gives you a better experience than you'd get by piracy. People are willing to pay for that. And it started out as an absolute shitshow, nearly as reviled as EGS is now, with a barely functional client. And you got forced into it in a really asshole way because they forced you to install it if you wanted to buy Half-Life 2. I mean what were you going to do, just not buy Half-Life 2? As if.

But then as the platform evolved, it had one amazingly good feature. Maybe your house burns down, maybe your computer explodes, maybe you get your brains sucked out by aliens, but you can always just install Steam and there all your games are, just click and it's automatically installed, forever.
