I blame Roger Ebert. His overgeneralization about games not being art caused the journos as well as certain game devs to become determined to prove him wrong even if it meant wreck8ng the medium to do so

Yes and no.

Before SJWs there was the "games as art" crowd but I was ok with them for the most part because they were just trying to bring video games forward as a medium and experiment in creative ways, there's nothing wrong with variety and experimentation.

But then they got so totally fucked in the ass by identity politics and they now think "art" is simply another word for "propaganda"

So it's the politics that are the problem, not treating games as art in of itself.

A good example of this devolution is the "Handle With Care" developer, a gay guy, the "Handle With Care" games were a couple of really arty, experimental Source engine games that were pretty interesting, what's his latest game from more recent years? A game where men blow each other in public restrooms but the penises are replaced by guns as a real deep statement on video games' fascination with firearms, so deep.

Considering the rates of AIDs, drug use, other STDs, and a myriad of other issues with gays that "game" just sounds like a big 'ole Freudian Slip rather than a statement on firearms.

gamers do not even want art. A game with artistic merit will be turned into a trashy franchise or fandom if it has success. And if it has no success it won't matter. As a medium gaming is amazingly disposable and cutting edge games become antiquated crap at lightspeed. Sometimes before they've even finished.
And none of that has any actual effect on what is and isn't art.

I read Eberts column. I can see why it irritated so many people but the fella ain't wrong.
He also gave Clock Work Orange a scathing review, as well as Fight Club, are you going to say either of those aren't art? I also recall him saying that a Spaghetti Western could not be art at one point.

Ebert had no position to say what is and isn't art and anyone who sucks his dick about what is and isn't "Art" is a brain dead sheep jerking off to a dead guy who hated EVERYTHING that wasn't Indy Garbage or Hollywood Fart Huffing.

For the Record he gave American Beauty 4 Stars and Fight Club 2, that is all you need to know about Ebert IMO.

Yes it does. An environment where artistic people WANT to work is important for art lmao.

That's the funny irony of it, but the developer flat out states on the website it's a commentary on video game violence, because all good art stems from the artist just flatly telling you it's meaning, am I right?

And people who -WANT- to make something are going to make something regardless. No it won't be a "100 Million Dollar video game" like Last of Us 2, But quite frankly "100 Million Dollars" won't matter if the person in charge of the project is a hack who isn't doing it to make something good, and is doing it for industry asspats and a 30 Million Dollar check.

They will likely go to another medium is my point. We do have a surfeit of genuine talent in this industry. They are all busy animating Captain Marvel energy blasts but at least it's "a movie". I would also add that Clockwork Orange was shocking and disturbing for its time so him not liking it might end up being part of the art.

Bullshit, there is plenty of talented people who have passion for games and work in the industry. Just because Bloated Corporate garbage like Mass Effect Andromeda, Fall Out 76, and TLOU2 shit the bed doesn't mean there isn't talent in the industry.

We agree to disagree. You could be right and I could just be jaded. But it's not like I ever expected any of those games to be games I'd enjoy.

How dare you support an organization that saves jobless wastes of human skin like me during massive natural disasters!

Now, I'm going to go donate to BLM and Planned Parenthood.

On one hand, I can get recruiters making some shit up or exaggerating it to meet a quota. On the other hand, national guard isn't really a branch that would set people off to do something like "kill brown people for democracy" and whatever other critical hot takes one would of made back in the 2000's.

Something is going on across multiple threads. From what I'm seeing, there's mass #metoo accusations going out across the entire games industry. It's basically what Anita and Zoe Quinn were trying to do before Alec an hero'd.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough information to make a long post about it, but those accused include
Angry Joe

the DotA community

Chris Avellone

Chilled Chaos

If there's any more, post a link to the thread here and I'll add it to the list.

Yeah I read yesterday that several people like Natalie "Zombieunicorn" Casanova (the wanna-be bullyhunter, former playboy model and amateuer Twitch bodypainter) made accusations known. She said that Tom "syndicate" Cassell (CSGO lotto *hinthint*) actually raped her. Something is going down this year and ffs I can't put my finger on it. It feels like as if some wack grand scheme is playing out that doesn't want the normies to calm down.

Only found a german soruce so far:

Keeping people cooped up for 4 months made everyone go crazy.

Niggers burnt down their cities, and now the Left is going #metoo on themselves because the Niggers were getting all the attention.

Women who tried to fuck to get their career on and failed and now are trying to #MeToo to get their career on. At least some of them are.

Also, it basically cascades. One does it, then the others do it. It was the same with celebrity #MeToo. It starts with something legitimate like Cosby and then it eventually goes to 'he brushed up against my shoulder and he made me uncomfortable, so he's a rapist'.

To be fair, I think A Clockwork Orange is a very good movie that I hated watching. I quite liked Ebert as a reviewer even though I didn't often agree with him.

Yup, they're trying for a second wave to time with Covid, or something. Except the accusations seem a lot tamer, and veering into that trend of absolving women of all responsibility, saying things like, 'Well, I was 21, just a kid, and he was in his late 20s,' and 'he got me drunk'. Like they're starting out with the 'sex I regret is now rape' stories and just going from there.

Doesn't help that someone tried it on Justin Bieber, he had receipts to prove it was impossible, and Jennifer Schurle had a massive and rather hilarious meltdown about how traumatised she was that ... a man had evidence that he wasn't guilty. I'd hope for no more Holowkas, but they're getting more transparent about that being the ideal end goal.

Method is also throwing out one of their own for being a creeper... on a 16 year old, no less.
