There are all sorts of assessments which would need to be made if you wanted to determine "what's best for Chris". A mental health assessment would only be one of them - after all, autism is a development disorder, not a mental health one. In the real world, there's often a huge gap between what's desirable in terms of support and what's realistically available. All the assessments in the world won't help Chris if the resources aren't there.

Autism isn’t a mental health condition, it’s a developmental disorder. Chris is kind of stuck- autism is diagnosed mostly in childhood and children are given support to help develop social skills etc during the time they are growing and learning from the world. Chris is now an adult, it’s pretty hard to do anything at this point as the time for socialisation (i mean psychologically, learning behaviour etc) has passed.

So yes Chris could see a professional, but it would have to be a specialist developmental physician and I highly doubt much could be done at this stage. The main thing that could be beneficial would be an assessment on whether Chris has the mental capacity to make decisions or not. If not, then the state would have control over what to do, however if it’s ruled that she does have capacity, it would be fully up to Chris as to what happens after Barb dies.

Many people who lack capacity have someone who is nominated to make the decisions in their best interest, but Chris doesn’t really have that now (Barb’s own capacity could be questioned tbh) and so it’s a very sticky situation. Chris needs some kind of advocate to help her at this point- that way there would be someone to help organise appointments and just get the ball rolling. The only issue is, who?
 
How did barb not hear anything? She must have, and did nothing. If she were worth a shit as a parent she would be the first person Chris would turn to when he's distressed, and she would bring him back to reality somewhat. How fucked is it that null is doing her parenting duties?

Null's the closest thing Chris has to a father figure, and that's super fucked up. Are we even in the same timeline?

She's a 76 year old frail woman who is used to Chris behaving strangely and has no doubt heard many odd noises coming from Chris over the years. I have little doubt Chris was told there would be dire consequences if he told anyone what was happening and there's no doubt Chris would believe those warnings. If Barb was capable of bringing Chris back to reality, this wouldn't have happened to begin with.
 
People like this are proof why stopping high school bullying was a bad idea.
