Shortly after the election they published an article about how radlibs in general had no idea what happened because they're so smug and out of touch that they didn't understand why sane people don't trust the democrats
It was David Wong that wrote that, and he was being completely disingenuous. He was literally posting about Trump voters being Nazis before and after the election, before and after he wrote that article.

I'm not sure why he wrote it. I'd guess either one of his superiors made him or else he had the overwhelming temptation to be smug and that was the most topical outlet at the time.

But having searched for Wong's articles I'm now reading "16 ways men are trained to hate women (you won't believe how #9 mansplains you!)" and wondering how they were smug enough to not see this coming.

THAT IS NOT WHY LUCAS MADE LEIA LUKE'S SISTER (yeah, I know, :autism:, but Chuck at SFDebris has been doing a super history of Lucas and Star Wars, and he talks about exactly why Leia and Luke ended up siblings and it had nothing to do with this.)

But seriously what's with these guys not realizing women tend to like romances? I always felt like Leia was the one being rewarded with Han anyway.

They don't romance women. They swoop in after a breakup between a woman and a real guy and assure her they're not like those other, predatory guys.

In their experience women don't like romance, since they're always saying no to guys like him.

So I guess now they're assuming readers don't like reading, either.

I remember an article bitching about unpaid internships in journalism, both print and video, and how the interns needed to band together and insist on being paid. Except there were so many people trying to get into the field that if anyone bitched they were fired immediately and the next sucker was hired. The person writing was complaining about how this was unfair and thereottabealaw, etc. etc. etc.

It was one of the best unintentional humor articles I’ve ever read.
unpaid internships ARE pretty shitty.. but uh.. maybe get into a field that isn't so overstuffed with bright fresh faces?
if everyone suddenly wants to write their opinions all over the internet, then your opinions and ability to string together sentences isn't that unique.

right size

???????

Cracked was trending briefly last night on Twitter. The tag was pretty much an even 50/50 split of blue checkmarks lamenting the "fall of a great" and virtue signalling that other companies would be wise to "hire these talented people" but of course none of them were willing to do the hiring themselves. No, someone else should do that, because none of these virtue signalers have any money. The other half of the split were people mocking Cracked's downfall and laughing at their misfortune. It was pretty great.

This whole scenario reminds me of a very condescending article they wrote many years back about how sorry they felt for Mad magazine (the humor magazine they ripped off decades ago) because they hadn't gone digital nor were they devoting their entire brand to clickbait lists for hipster liberals.

It contained this little gem of a picture.

Whose ship is sinking now?
Good fucking riddance.

I found this post on reddit from one of the former writers talking about seeing the decline of Cracked first hand.

And the old adblock saga I think was from 09. It just shows that Wong was saying adblock would be the death of Cracked even back then.

I started reading Cracked way back in 05, even bought Wongs first book. Part of me feels a bit bad seeing it fail like this, I just wanted to have a laugh after work damn it, not get told how I'm a racist sexist that will rape everyone because I like video games.

I have a job that pays well, so I’m gonna start submitting articles for cracked just for fun and see what happens. Hopefully they won’t be too upset with “ToP 10 Reasons Hitler Did Nothing Wrong.”

Cracked was never the same after John Severin left. Mostly because it really wasn't the same Cracked, the website had only the barest connections to the magazine.

"But during the ’60s and ’70s, Severin seemed to be everywhere, especially as the artist-in-residence at Cracked, where he did almost all of the covers and usually several features each issue, producing additional Cracked covers for paperback reprints. After being one of the founding artists for Mad, he began working for the Mad imitation Cracked in the late ’50s and stayed there for nearly 40 years, because he was paid as well as the Mad contributors and was allowed to contribute several features in every issue. In addition to the mountain of work he produced for Cracked, he was simultaneously working for Marvel, Warren and DC. Severin was the consummate professional who editors and art directors knew could draw anything, from a Roman legionary to Cracked mascot Sylvester P. Smythe, and everything in between. Like fellow EC colleagues Jack Davis and Frank Frazetta, Severin could crank out great humor comics with the same facility he drew war, Western and historical tales. Severin was nothing if not versatile, though his style was always instantly recognizable and remarkably consistent in its quality. Even to the last, it didn’t seem that Severin had dropped a line."

Wait, there was a period of time where Cracked the magazine wasn't shit?

Cracked was actually how I found this place years ago, when they had a photoplasty on weird subcultures that I wouldn't BELIEVE exists:

I was completely enamoured this first time I saw this face. I needed to know more. Like, there's no way this guy is real, and I needed to know why some fucks would document his every move. Little did I know I'd become part of the hive. So it led me here and has costed me precious time and is slowly turning autistic. GG.

Also spent $20 just to shitpost even though I barely post.

I used to read Cracked often. The tipping point for me was when they started hosting articles written by extremely questionable people (the Zoe Quinn and Brianna Wu articles). As much as I enjoyed reading it before that point, I'm now not sad to see it sink.

Hey, the Zoe Quinn article was when I quit reading it, too!
