I genuinely think that they're trying to go for that Gamecube era cell shading look, the issue is that their graphics still look way too rough for that since they tend to lack good shading or texture work. I would love a return to 2d Pokemon especially since the sprite work they had in Gen IV and Gen V for instance looked fantastic.
