What do you even mean, "given the times we live in"? Speaking from a communication technology standpoint, this is one of the easiest times in history to meet a wide variety of people. And, provided both parties are willing to reveal information as easily-accessible as their facebook profile (and probably continue to communicate on there), it's easy to remove a lot of the risk. It's not that scary. No one's going to rape or kidnap you, Connor.

Last girl I dated, we only talked online for the first month. Sure, we were set up by a friend, but I hadn't seen her in person or heard her voice at all until we ended up hanging out about 4 or 5 weeks later. The only place that we could work out for us to meet was the parking garage I had to use, because I'd never been in the town before. So there we are, two people who'd only spoken online, on the eighth floor of a parking garage in 15-degree weather. Neither of us died or got thrown in a trunk because we both were up-front and established trust. It's not that difficult. Just don't be an idiot about it.

I'm pretty sure it's the latter. My guess is that his parents are normal levels of strict ("No, Connor, you cannot drive to Ohio because Molly Ringwald said she'd meet you there,") but he exaggerates it both to get out of doing anything and to satisfy his need for drama.

I can't currently find the post where he says he hates his parents for crying over his hospital bed after he tried to kill himself. It was a great one because it was obvious they were hamming it up and only acting like they cared about him and how could anyone believe their crocodile tears??? Anyway here are two posts where he both projects his own faults on his mother and is super pissed they are worried about him after his second suicide attempt.

Not that I've heard of. My guess is that they've kind of given up on him ever growing up and achieving anything. I don't know how much of it is Connor dramatizing his own life, but it sounds like they may have had some personal issues, and they don't have the time or energy to ride their adult son's ass just to get him to accomplish something.

That's....pretty damn sad if that's true. Just for parents to have that realization that "Well shit, my son/daughter isn't going to do anything with his life..." and just kinda coasting along hoping, at the very least, son/daughter doesn't go to jail, kill self, etc.
