For those of you that have Redesigning Eva on the brain, I'm working on a thorough outline for the second draft. I using Notepad to gather research on criminal profiling, gene therapy, etc. and further develop the characters.

What kind of notes do you take? Any specific sites you find that are good references for these or is Wikipedia good enough?

Basically, the notes consist of...
-General information about Los Angeles County, for the sake of verisimilitude.
-Detailed character profiles, complete with symptoms of whatever mental illness or condition they suffer from, for psychological realism.
-Research on gene therapy and its methods. Artistic license may have to be taken somewhat, considering the focus of the story is on the characters and not necessarily technology.
-Methods of criminal profiling, since this is a serial killer manhunt story.
While Wikipedia is good to just get the gist of stuff, I feel more comfortable using more respectable sources, both on the Internet and in the real world. I actually have a book called The Human Predator, which is pretty much a historical chronicle of murder throughout the ages.

For developing the characters, I would suggest you try these:
  1. Don't get into the development and such straight away. Just focus on those "bare bones" (personality, appearance, and the like) first before going into some deeper stuff. You can't develop them further if you don't understand them, so hold off on that until you have more going for the character.
  2. What are some values the characters hold? What do they believe in? Some of these can change as the story goes on, but there are some that the character will hold onto no matter what. These also play a role in development and are part of the "bare bones" that make the character more interesting. For example, let's say Eva believes that you never abandon a person no matter what. This means never, even if the character in question just stabbed her in the back. This can even turn into a flaw (potentially a fatal flaw; not necessarily something that gets her killed, but something that works against her).
  3. You can try writing some short stories about some of the individual characters to flesh them out more than what is seen in the story. This gives you a better idea of how to write the characters, if a trait/value/whatever works, etc.
 
You know, there are times where, when I least expect it, I find myself in a trance, within my stories and inside my character's heads. Just today, when I went to the doctor's office with my grandmother, something hit me in the waiting room. Mentally, I was in a greenhouse in the back of Lilith Grant's mansion. Lilith, if you don't know, is the serial killer that Eva is hunting in the story. Anyway, I saw her pet cat, strolling through the aisles of roses and into a closed-off room. Inside, Lilith was wearing a kimono, sitting at a desk. Near that desk is a shrine to Dr. Klaus Krieger, filled with press clippings of his capture and subsequent trial.

What hit me was that Lilith craves the appreciation of her idol. She hates abandonment and rejection, and if the good doctor doesn't appreciate her Transformation....

Not drinking is fine. It's a personal decision, but it's important to realize you don't have to drink to get drunk (ie moderation) and it's a social activity. A glass of wine, a can of beer, whatever floats your boat, with friends and family isn't going to turn you into a raging alcoholic.
 
Connor, I completely understand your reason for not drinking, but if you do it out of fear of becoming like an alcoholic relative, you don't have to worry. More than half of my family are raging alcoholics so I was nearly terrified of the stuff until my mother explained that just having a drink does not mean you will suddenly go into a cold sweat and feel like you need more and more. Once I turned 21 I actually had fun trying out new drinks with the fiance to see what we liked and what we didn't. I have a personal preference to never actually get drunk, though, just buzzed, but that's my own choice. I also don't drink outside of my house or a friend's house, but once you get more of an understanding on how much tolerance you gain and how you can handle the alcohol, there's no need to be afraid of it, it's all about the mindset and self control, I had no struggle with drinking and am glad I tried it so I can take the edge off on a stressful day.

Then again, if you just hate the taste of alcohol, I understand that too.
