I wonder if he's going to think twice about Helephant now. Probably not.
Think twice about taking money in advance for a project that he may not even live long enough to complete? Ya, probably not.
Now, I've never driven stock car.Yeah, he's the one at fault. There are unwritten rules about this and he fucked up at least two of them.
1. If the car behind you is clearly faster, let him pass. The only time this doesn't really apply is towards the end of of a race AND both cars are competing for the podium or championship points.
2. If you're a lapped car and you're not in a position to get back on the lead lap, let the faster cars pass.
(There's nuance between the first and second point, but they are different)
There's no way to rationalize Coomelot being in the right. This isn't the 80s anymore and stock car racing is an expensive sport. Numbnuts is gonna have heat from the other driver after this shit. Not only did he cost his team money (money that he clearly doesn't have), but he cost the other guy too, from the big picture perspective and the race perspective.
It wouldn't shock me if he starts getting blacklisted. Stock car racing is still a good ole boys network and he's labeled himself as a money vacuum with negative return. He's not a raw, young driver oozing with potential. He's a bum that wrecks cars.
I did, however, used to do amateur "hobby" racing through the SCCA. At many of the races, I'd find myself on the track with vehicles either in higher or lower classes than me.
Heck, one of the guys I'd hang out with raced an Austin-Healey Sprite with a .9L engine. No that's not a typo, it was less than a liter in displacement.
My point is, you'd often have to make way for faster cars, or dodge cars that were practically standing still. There wasn't any "rule" that said you had to, but if you didn't make way, and chose to drive 3 wide into turns like that, you'd probably find all the valve cores from your race trailer's tires taped to your windshield at the end of the day.
Second time would get you an ass-kicking.
