How is it that comic books are still a thing in the 21st century - let alone one about to attract this amount of sperging - when as a medium, they're more technically out of date than VHS tapes?

The same way live theater, live music, reading paper packs, going to the movie theater and a hundred other things are still a thing.

Comics are a medium separate from literature proper and feature films. They provide an experience unlike either while carrying traits of both. People like comics because as a medium it's actually quite solid.

As an industry in the west it's a dumpster fire but that has more to do with the biggest players in the industry than the medium itself. Comics are still doing fine everywhere else on earth. It's only in places where the big two rule that it's a complete shit show.

I disagree. Don't underestimate the level of cognitive dissonance FROG's followers will engage in to maintain there little fan club. Ethan hasn't appeared to be about CG principles for a couple years now and he's done fine.

Nobody agrees to do a Red Sonja issue for pennies. They do agree to do a Red Sonja issue for pennies hoping they will do Batman or X-Men one day. So, he who controls Batman controls comics.
Dynamite would have to deal with a serious bleed of potential talent, as well as licensies drying up because of bad press. The Gail Simones are replaceable, but his options are boiling down to the Mandy Summers...
If it was just for selling comics, Nick Barucci could call RCM and ask him "Jawbreakers Ongoing when?" and throw him any license and make some bucks out of it. But he is losing having the guys who will be making Batman in 2025 doing his comics in 2020 and maybe getting some shit from the producers of "The Boys" tv show - or maybe from Garth Ennis himself.
