Each year, Variety selects ten of the best stand-up comedians in the country to showcase as Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch. Among those chosen this year were Insecure’s Amanda Seales, The Daily Show’s Dulcé Sloan, and American Vandal writer Jaboukie Young-White. And then there was Darren Knight. Knight’s credits include a series of YouTube and Facebook videos of a character called “Southern Momma” and a documentary about himself called Southern Momma: The Darren Knight Story, in which he is billed as “the fastest rising comedian in American history.”

The trouble seemed to begin even before the show started. Seales said in a statement to Vulture that Knight antagonized both her and Sloan while they were waiting for the preshow panel to begin, and then continued to do so during the panel. When Seales spoke of using her comedy to challenge racism and sexism, “he said, ‘comedy shouldn’t be about attacking racists. That is ostracizing your audience.’ ”

Things got more tense when Knight took the stage at the actual show, with his opening joke reportedly being “To our wives and girlfriends, may they never meet.” (If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s commonly attributed to Groucho Marx.) According to the reaction on Twitter, things did not improve from there. “Darren Knight’s set at @justforlaughs tonight led me to apologize to everyone around me that not all of us (Southern guys) are idiots,” tweeted one audience member. “Dude forgets the name of the festival HE’S PERFORMING AT, makes diarrhea ‘jokes’, & then insults minorities.”

Other attendees tweeted similar sentiments about Knight’s performance, which he chose to end with a mini-lecture on how comedy should not be about sexism or race, because that’s not what the audience wants. The audience booed him off. According to Seales, Knight also commented “Looking good, Precious” to Sloan as he exited the stage. Sloan tweeted about this exchange afterward.

The host of the show, Saturday Night Live’s Chris Redd, confronted Knight after the show, which is documented in a series of videos Seales posted to her Instagram Stories. In the videos, Redd can be seen having a heated conversation with Knight, who then storms off as Redd calls after him, “Real comics write real jokes!” The entire exchange can be viewed below.

Knight’s performance and treatment of his fellow performers aside, it’s also unclear why someone known for making videos on social media, and not stand-up jokes, was selected for one of the world’s most prominent stand-up comedy shows in the first place.

Seales has an idea, though. “This speaks to a larger narrative about the misplaced pressure to include voices from the Trump right in spaces simply to appease a demographic that is problematic and damaging to the upward advancement of larger society,” she said, pointing to posts on Knight’s Facebook critical of Maxine Waters, Roseanne’s cancellation, and the existence of BET. Redd, for his part, declined to comment for this article, but summed up his thoughts on Twitter.

Since the show, tons of comedians have commented on Knight’s performance, or Variety choosing to feature him, on Twitter:

This was an obvious set-up
If he behaves the way he did, it's proof that all trump supporters are racists who must be de-platformed
If he waters down his "act" or panders to the crowd, it's proof that Trump supporters are coward online trolls who don't dare say it to people's faces, or don't really believe what they say
If he spots the ambush for what it is and refuses to come, then it's both.

Racist jokes are also bad. Unless they are about white people because everyone knows you can't be racist to white people.

Everyone in this current round of the culture war is playing with fire. And not the warm cozy kind. The thermonuclear kind. Previous iterations of the culture war followed the usual age of reason arguments we have been fighting since the enlightenment. What is the place of religion and morality in society. What is the role of government in mediating the disputes between liberty and tyranny when one man's religious liberty becomes another man's cultural tyranny.

Now though, a combination of post modern philosophy with the social media revolution has turned our culture war into something else entirely. The 1990s we were fighting with pointy sticks. Now we are fighting with machine guns. The "weapons" have become far more destructive, and the consequences for the opposing sides have become far more severe.

The reason is that the "liberal" side of the culture war has embraced a racially based identity ideology, that is combined with a deconstructive philosophical narrative that seeks to do nothing less then to rewrite everyone's perceptions of the past and present. Exhibit A being Christopher Columbus going from heroic explorer to literally Hitler. As one of many examples. For the conservative side of the dispute, this has become a conflict not about abstract religious rules and personal morality. It has morphed into a conflict where the stakes are nothing less then the fundamental nature of reality.

People may not say they feel that way about it. But their brains do. The little voice in the night before you go to sleep says what you don't say in the morning to your friends and family. And consciously or not, they act on that. For the liberals to rewrite the oppressive reality with a new more progressive version, and for conservatives a frantic effort to stop them.

That is an intractable dispute, and we need to sort it out soon or it WILL get violent. Fundamental perceptions of reality are not tied to the higher orders of our brains. The better angels of our nature. They are tied with the chimp part of our brain where things that don't comport with established perceptions are alien, potentially dangerous, and need to be destroyed.

Isn't that actually the truth though?

Sure, if you want to view it that way. But he also opened the discovery and exploitation of the western hemisphere of the planet and was incorporated into the origin story of the current global hegemony. So the focus has been on his daring exploration, and not the fact that he is responsible for the deaths of the Caribbean natives.

But ask yourself this one. Why change the narrative. More importantly, why elevate the bad and ignore the good. Instead of intrepid explorer (which he was) we get genocidal scum bag (which he kinda was, disease did it more then him though). I could accept taking the bad with the good. But that is not the goal. The goal is to make the the good into the bad because bad happened because of the good. That is to say, the very existence of the the global hegemony, the United States, is born upon a throne of skulls, with no redeeming value whatsoever. And if we accept that, we undermine the entire conceptual existence of the United States.

So yes, Columbus was a son of a bitch. But he was our son of a bitch.
