Each year, Variety selects ten of the best stand-up comedians in the country to showcase as Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch. Among those chosen this year were Insecure’s Amanda Seales, The Daily Show’s Dulcé Sloan, and American Vandal writer Jaboukie Young-White. And then there was Darren Knight. Knight’s credits include a series of YouTube and Facebook videos of a character called “Southern Momma” and a documentary about himself called Southern Momma: The Darren Knight Story, in which he is billed as “the fastest rising comedian in American history.”

The trouble seemed to begin even before the show started. Seales said in a statement to Vulture that Knight antagonized both her and Sloan while they were waiting for the preshow panel to begin, and then continued to do so during the panel. When Seales spoke of using her comedy to challenge racism and sexism, “he said, ‘comedy shouldn’t be about attacking racists. That is ostracizing your audience.’ ”

Things got more tense when Knight took the stage at the actual show, with his opening joke reportedly being “To our wives and girlfriends, may they never meet.” (If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s commonly attributed to Groucho Marx.) According to the reaction on Twitter, things did not improve from there. “Darren Knight’s set at @justforlaughs tonight led me to apologize to everyone around me that not all of us (Southern guys) are idiots,” tweeted one audience member. “Dude forgets the name of the festival HE’S PERFORMING AT, makes diarrhea ‘jokes’, & then insults minorities.”

Other attendees tweeted similar sentiments about Knight’s performance, which he chose to end with a mini-lecture on how comedy should not be about sexism or race, because that’s not what the audience wants. The audience booed him off. According to Seales, Knight also commented “Looking good, Precious” to Sloan as he exited the stage. Sloan tweeted about this exchange afterward.

The host of the show, Saturday Night Live’s Chris Redd, confronted Knight after the show, which is documented in a series of videos Seales posted to her Instagram Stories. In the videos, Redd can be seen having a heated conversation with Knight, who then storms off as Redd calls after him, “Real comics write real jokes!” The entire exchange can be viewed below.

Knight’s performance and treatment of his fellow performers aside, it’s also unclear why someone known for making videos on social media, and not stand-up jokes, was selected for one of the world’s most prominent stand-up comedy shows in the first place.

Seales has an idea, though. “This speaks to a larger narrative about the misplaced pressure to include voices from the Trump right in spaces simply to appease a demographic that is problematic and damaging to the upward advancement of larger society,” she said, pointing to posts on Knight’s Facebook critical of Maxine Waters, Roseanne’s cancellation, and the existence of BET. Redd, for his part, declined to comment for this article, but summed up his thoughts on Twitter.

Since the show, tons of comedians have commented on Knight’s performance, or Variety choosing to feature him, on Twitter:

No one would have thought about that boring movie if fatty didn't bring it up on Twitter.

Also
>calls comedian racist
>calls him white nigga

Critical audience misread here. 90% of the people who go to a magazine's comedy festival think "Fuck Dr*mpf and fuck wh*te m*les" is the funniest thing anyone could ever say.

In agreement here. People do want racy, blue collar jokes in most other spaces, but this wasn't a legitimate comedy night in a bar, it was a lefty circlejerk. He would've been great if he could both stand up for his righty opinions & make them laugh with it, but all he gets in a participation award for showing up with middle fingers raised. It takes some gumption I guess, but could have accomplished much more if he was actually a good writer or performer.

Comedians are the canary in the coal mine when it comes to the rise of authoritarianism. When society starts going after them, you need to start getting worried.

The CHEKA is often described as the ‘Bolshevik secret police’ but in reality only some of its operations were secretive or concealed. The existence and activities of the CHEKA were widely known and many of its operations were conducted openly and publicly. Though CHEKA agents had no standard uniform, most wore long leather coats and could be easily identified. All this was purposely done: to show Russians that the CHEKA was everywhere and could deal swiftly with those who betrayed or opposed the Bolshevik regime. Some CHEKA killings were carried out more for public effect than any political purpose. In 1918 CHEKA agents appeared in the audience of a Moscow circus and began shooting, after one of its clown acts, Bim Bom, made fun of the Bolsheviks and their leaders.

It sounds to me like everyone chosen to be on stage was really unfunny, just for different reasons. Christ.

Any smart comedian reads the crowd. Being versatile comes with the territory so if you go to a black comedy club and you're white, for example, you shouldn't start calling people in the audience niggers.

If I was a guy who was running a comedy place I would've blacklisted everyone Variety listed as the best comedians.

Uh, idiots.... being a comedian isn't about standing on stage and telling jokes anymore, its about educating the audience on why they should donate their paychecks to PoC who fight oppression by deciding not to get jobs. #woke

Imagine this exact sentence but replace "Trump right" with blacks.

For me, stand up comedy died the same day George Carlin died, so I really don't give a fuck about any of these "comics."

As it is, after doing a cursory glance, Knight is a "redneck" comedian who likes to compare him to Jeff Foxworthy, and the other three mentioned in the article are black suburbanites who have all displayed the usual millennial snark and/or sassy black woman routine, so how exactly did they expect this to pan out? This grouping makes about as much sense as having Toby Keith be the opening act for a Cardi B concert.

1. This guy is an absolute tard for failing to read the crowd, and he's a double tard for being so fucking self-righteous about it. You don't say "that isn't what the audience wants" to the audience, they say it to you.

2. All the other comics are stupid cunts for bullying this guy over his failure rather than letting him contemplate it in peace. All they could ever accomplish is cementing his hatred for the exact type of people he criticized in his act and legitimize his points.

When Seales spoke of using her comedy to challenge racism and sexism

Comedians overestimate how much their bits means to the audience.

You don't say "that isn't what the audience wants" to the audience, they say it to you.

In fairness, he was set up to fail and knew it. None of those audience members were going to watch his YouTube channel. He could have picked a different tactic but in some ways he's cementing his position as the comedian for the non-elites. Not a bad strategy.

Lessons learned for Herr Knight here:

1. Holocaust jokes are indeed funny
2. A field trip to Auschwitz is not the right venue for them

No, its the perfect place for a good zinger.

Meanwhile his daughter goes around talking about how he'd be an sjw.
