Please post some examples I’ve never heard of this before.

Weird creature designs are a passion of mine - I fucking love how creative people can get. When I think of furry some of the more older popular species I can recall are the Chakats, which were just taur herm cougars usually, in a scifi setting and they don't really get seen anymore except from oldschool furs who never let go of them. I don't think they were ever closed, though.

I've never really understood closed species though. I'd rather personally make my own stuff than borrow from someone elses universe - no rules, full creativity and all that.
To a certain extent, I can understand if the person is creating their own universe, stories and lore and want to regulate a species to remain 'canonical' so no misunderstood information gets around of them. Eg. See how Sergals went from a canonical interesting space-race of warriors to femboy fodder where all we see now if them getting fucked in Secondlife. Mick has a few other interesting species that no one even pays attention to.

I've always loved the whole making characters, becoming bonded to them and putting deep thought into their creation and personality - When it comes to closed species and how people would rather trade and sell for big bux than keep a character longer than a week, it's clearly a pure aesthetics thing only. They don't care about making a character, they just want a 'designer' ref art and because of that they later say "sorry guys I don't connect with this char anymore who wants to buy them" and proceed to rack up the price due to buying/sketching new art for it, or even for just getting fanart.

People mentioning the Dutchies - YES. Holy fuck. Dutchies, 'fluff dragons' in general are stupid popular, and barely a unique thing to come across, yet because Dutchies suddenly gained popularity everyone who has ever made a fluffy dragon suddenly gets called a ripoff. They were around years before dutchies were a thing, and the idea of swapping an animals hide ie. Feathered dogs, Furred lizards, is one of the most basic ideas you can get for a new animal.
The gang mentality against anyone who has anyone a tiny bit similar to a popular maker they follow is mad. It's not furry, but there was a chick on DA a while back who was trying to sell some very expensive adopts of her og 'species', when it was really just completely generic anime people with cat ears. Slap a fancy name on, give it some magic abilities and suddenly it becomes exotic.

On the topic of 'thinly veiled very obvious fetish fuel', asexual slime bugs.

Foot, slime, and fat fetishes? Of course it must be asexual!

Reading the species doc it seems they actually reproduce by absorbing other things into them and converting them into bugs or whatever, via "oviposition". Which is somewhat baffling since they are described as lacking proper sex organs so where the fuck do the eggs leave from? Their skin?

All this is to say that I guess we can add transformation and oviposition to the list of jerk fuel this creator is into.

God these prices are such ripoffs wtf
I don't understand. Is this basically paying for permission to draw a more 'free' design in comparison to the species rules, or are you paying for the site/species maker to draw the design for you after you've designed it?

The worse they could do is end up on the ED wiki page so they end up getting roasted by the truth over their CS being jokes. I could name lots of creatures that existed before OS was even a thing. Be that in media or in games. Bet you they might make a CS based on animals as donuts then we will be doomed!

I'm going to be introducing my own line of Original Species on Kiwifarms, today.

Starting with Cronut Dogs and a few more, like Fritter Dogs, Maple Bars dogs, cake dogs, Jelly-filled dogs which are not to be confused with dogs that eat a lot of jelly, Danish dogs, Coffeedogs, Teadogs, sheetdogs, and lastly, kiwifarm dogs.

Kiwifarm dogs come in a variety of types like "Thread on why closed species are fucking exceptional".

This is the future of capitalism,..,...

Woa...
This but unironically. It's like the old goldrush, but now the one-toothed yokels with shotguns claim creative space and hope they strike autistic gold. Eventually every possible combination of generic features will be taken. Some kid draws a wolf with feathers? Better pay the neckbeard squatting on that particular combination, or else!

I still don't get what's stopping somebody from just making their own oc based off of a closed species. Not gonna lie, Dainties are pretty cute, but I'm not gonna pay upwards of $2000 just to make one. Sometimes not even make one, just buy the ""rights"" to have a pre-made OC. Fuck that.

On the other hand lots of desperate broke artists could always build up just enough of a following to introduce one and have potential buyers. Low price with adoptables of a closed species for mystique, then build up into the actual closed species slots.

Oh god I remember a similar version of this garbage back in the day on Deviantart where people would have "adopts" where people also paid for designs and this just seem to have taken it to another level- I do agree that more drama is probably needed to add into the the thread. But seriouslY i have never understood this concept? Just come up with something yourself. I can understand commissioning but paying just to get "allowed" to draw a design? Ridiculous.

Also I highkey want to draw art of these "Closed species" In a kiwi farms shirt or something just to piss them off :story:

Nothing at all. As mentioned in the furry character thread, it's mostly community policing and unspoken agreements to respect the artist.

On topic, I appreciate y'all for cataloguing all these. I'm aware of the few larger closed species debacles, but there's several more I haven't heard of, and I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad that I missed the less well-known ones.

So a few people have brought up 'what keeps you from xyz' here, and I think that actually brings up another huuuuuge drama source: what happens if you own one of these closed species designs, and you commit the cardinal sin of breaking Da Rules? Well, a couple things. You get a thousand screeching autists all over your accounts, you probably get blacklisted by whoever owns the species and everyone they've ever talked to. But the most 'holy fuck really' tends to be that a lot of the time they'll decide to punt you out of the species. And according to a lot of them, that means taking back the design.

There are kind of three ways this can happen, going from least severe/vindictive/isnt-that-illegal to most.

OPTION 1: Out of the community, no longer a 'canon' character
Since a lot of the draw for some people is the big fanclub/rp group/etc aspect of this, this can be a bummer. The character gets taken off official lists of all species characters, can't interact with characters that are a part of the 'canon' world/storyline, it's not really that big of a deal but it's usually punishment for if the character breaks the preestablished lore or something.

OPTION 2: Must be 'removed from species'
Since Official Traits are SOOPER SRS BSNS, some species owners will demand that if you've left the species group or broken some rule of theirs, you have to alter the character so itno longer meets their standards for a species. So if your character is a... idk, a catboy with a unicorn horn and an ass made of sushi, you've gotta remove some combination or all of those 'traits' to some standard they deem necessary that it no longer resembles the species. Don't do it to their liking, or refuse to redraw/alter a character that you like and may have spent a bunch of money on art of? Well that's just too fucking bad, they'll go about the process of sending the masses after you, kicking up a fuss on whatever sites you have imagery of the character on, etc etc. Toyhou.se, a site a lot of these types like hosting their character art on, is notoriously prone to catering to this kind of tantrum, and people getting half of their characters deleted off the site because someone threw a fit about 'ownership' is not that uncommon.

OPTION 3: lol fuck you it's mine now
This is the most insane one to me, especially since again, these sparkledogs often have pricetags ranging up into the hundreds or thousands: with some species, they'll straight-up put in their species rules that if you misstep/piss them off/etc, they can (and will) reclaim and resell your character. Yes, the one you paid for. Yes, the one you've likely paid a whole bunch more getting commissioned art of. No, you will not be getting a refund, you criminal, you've committed double plus wrongthink. This one naturally is where you tend to see the biggest shitshows go down, because it'll always clearly draw the line between cliques and fanbases and you would not BELIEVE how many kiddos you'll see screeching 'but it's in the TOS of course they can do that!!!!'.

----

If you want a fun example of this sort of nonsense in motion, go check out the thread on Adiago, if you start here it's her making a big deal because she broke up with some dude and decided to take back his character and resell it because he's no longer giving her the D. It's an ongoing drama still I think.

Here's some assorted links and screengrabs, I didn't have anything in particular in mind as an example for this so it's a bit of a potpourri of things that came up for 'revoking CS'. A lot of the interest is in the comments, just for an idea of how often people encounter this, the contrast between attitudes on it, etc etc.

"Cinnadogs" were (maybe still are, fuck if I know) one of the big early popular food+animal closed species, I know they used to be a total drama magnet. Also ugly as sin imho.

Here's the current version of the rules for that species, which apparently doesn't include the reclaim/resell anymore, but does state that if you fuck up you're banned and your characters are voided. Also an example of what a species ToS looks like. (archive)

How this sort of situation tends to go down (sorry for no direct link/archive, toyhou.se requires a signup to view anything on the site)

Here's the character in question, btw, there's no accounting for taste but wyd.

If you don't mind me giving a bit of backwater, but there's this one closed species that's been on my mind for quite a while after talking about it with a friend. They were previously called 'Anifurries' before being changed to 'Cudjuus' and they are created by "Komaeda" (Discord) for a story of hers which according to the other creator (who we'll refer to as 'Aren') is pretty bullshit.

Basically, Cudjuus are a closed species but on rare occasions they open up for MYOs! But here's the problem. In the creator's own words: "(DO NOT USE UNCOMMON OR RARE TRAITS FOR YOUR MYO.)". Now you might be thinking, oh! That sounds fairly alright! But here's the problem. A lot of the most simple of design choices like curly hair or almond shaped eyes are Uncommon or Rare traits. And whenever somebody, even the side creator, wants to make their own character, the creator (labeled Komaeda) always acts like a bitch about it.

Roll the footage!

And as a fun fact, this character here actually fits in Komaeda's "lore". And when Aren asked her what was wrong with it, she responded with nothing but a period. And as of this mini-thread, hasn't responded since.

So basically, Komaeda here doesn't like it when people want to have fun with their designs and stuff. Plus, according to Aren, she has more than 17 Cudjuus, maybe even 20 or more. And guess how many she expects a member to have? 5-10. And guess what! Almost all of her Cudjuus are in some way extremely overpowered and "Mary Sue-ish". Don't take my word for it, take Aren's. She's the side-creator.

Now, speaking of one of her Cudjuus, here's the main one of her story. If you have a distaste towards bright colors, please know that Komaeda has her computer brightness pretty damn low.

@Yukari Yakumo aw man, these things are a great example of 'that's literally just a catboy', what a joke.

Side note though, please be so so careful bringing up small species like this-- it's super tempting when it's something you've got a personal tie to because it means jucier drama and more detail/insider info/whatever but when a species only has like twenty-thirty active members in it you can become a lot easier to identify. Stay safe Kiwis.

Fucking kek all mighty what a shit show. Just because you tell them to fuck off after buying a supposed product - which ffs why would you even spend 5 bucks on A DESIGN ORIGINAL OC PLZ DO NOT STEAL OR USE IN A WAY I DON'T WANT YOU TO opening you up for that - you pretty much get robbed of it and there goes a thousand dollars...

This has to be a new level of stupidity. Financial Darwinism.

Maybe we can make like a inbred retarded drooling dog Closed Species and profit off of it for the farms?

KeKiwians - Closed Species, pay me munny simps to use it for your OC.

I love taking the piss out of closed species, glad to see there's finally a thread up for them. I've never had any personal interactions with these sorts of people, but I've certainly been tempted on occasion to touch the po.op and mess with 'em. Someone already suggested it above, but I second the motion--I wanna find a species with the most uptight creator and draw one of their creatures in a KF shirt.
