@deermeat has been threadbanned for signing up to whine about someone on DeviantArt who pissed him off.

And DA looks even more cancerous than what I remember it.... Wtf is that shitty board design? They trying to be edgy or something?
It's their new iteration known as "Eclipse". While they used to give fans the option of reversing back to classic DA, they're apparently removing that and forcing the shitty new theme upon users. Many prominent users are threatening to leave the site because of it.
I'm guessing this is gonna be a Tumblr situation in which there's gonna be a mass exodus of the site once the option is removed, with the artists moving to Twitter and Instagram. The site will remain alive, albeit with only the most die-hard fetish artists remaining on the platform.
What I've heard is that DeviantArt is falling into the classic "dying site tries to rip off another site's layout" trap to stay relevant. They've been bleeding users for years thanks to the rise of Tumblr and later Twitter in the art scene, they don't have the ability to upload straight up porn like Newgrounds/Inkbunny/Furaffinity allows, and ArtStation is becoming the Vimeo/LinkedIn of art sharing sites as it tries to attract "professionals" instead of kids. To add to DeviantArt's troubles they were bought out by Wix, that website building service you see ads for.

In this case they're trying to desperately ape ArtStation's layout because a bunch of web design/branding "professionals" and corporate suits think it'll bring them more money. The problem with this is not only is it discarding DeviantArt's branding and color scheme, but it's changing the layout so much it's driving old users out. Just like what happened during YouTube's yearly layout changes and the Windows 8 experiment, users of websites actively despise any major layout change.

Awww now why did you kick out the thread-resident retard? :(

And I see. Looking at Artstation though they certainly made it way better looking and not as cancerous. You'd think they'd learn from other companies/websites' mistakes.

Rip Deviantard. Guess the degenerate cockroaches are gonna skitter somewhere else like whatever that shitty website was with all the furry art porn.

I am gonna be honest, some of the closed species actually look creative and fun to look at, and have some nice thought put into them.

But then you realized that some fat fucking loser is holding them in some kinda jail that you gotta PAY to even use them, even though they are just imaginary characters, and don't really have a limit on how they are drawn or made, but that isn't stopping the creator.

I swear, some people take one step forward and five steps back when it comes to art.

The story is generic and strangely dark in some places for a neopets-lite artstyle. Tends to be the case with creators who sell cute adopts to older audiences (like the guys who make edgy pokemon fangames and comics).

It's not uncommon to see more grim subject matters pop up in CS groups, due to the nature of their split attempts to appeal to both a younger and more adult audience. Though it's more common in CS groups that incorporate breeding mechanics; as themes of incest, adultery and paedophilia are all too casually picked up by creators who just want to throw around their OCs like they were the town bicycle, all whilst under a thin veil of it all being "deep". Bonus points if it happened through rape.

It's entirely inappropriate and more often than not treated with the same level of maturity as a gaggle of school boys snickering over the word 'penis'. Often leading to such jarring artwork.

To get back to CS, one that should not go without mention is Sushidogs, as their monetary success can be attributed as one of the factors to why there's so many original species that are just any one animal mixed with a specific item of food.

Originally created by DA user Witchpaws ( link to their current, protected twitter handle Spikedpeach ) and currently under the ownership of DA user Chital ( also current founder of the DA group ). Sushidogs, as the name would suggest, started out as shiba inues with mixed traits of Sushi slapped on, just about one of the most basic yet widely appealing concepts for a CS. However, the core concept was quickly shifted to any article of food mixed with a shiba inue, before being thrown out all together in favour of mixing a shiba inue with whatever either Witchpaws, or one of her many guest artists, desired.

One of these arn't even food.jpg

Back in their prime (circa 2016) it was not uncommon to see any one design go for less than a hundred, in rarer cases, less than a thousand. They had multiple guest artists providing designs and were widely sought out by furries and causal users alike across multiple platforms, easily raking in thousands for Witchpaws every month of the year. Being so popular, it had it's fair share of drama. Including a scuffle between itself and ( previously mentioned CS ) Bagbeans ( owned by Griffsnuff ) where the owner of Bagbeans was blacklisted from auctions due to allegedly drawing a Sushidog with it's eyes open.

Only if you want to be a part of their club and RP along with all the other paypiggies. This whole thing looks like crude, homespun, gacha games to me. It's not really about the art, you can download/create that for free. It's about showing off to the other players, showing them how much you have invested into the game.

I would compare it more to playing any kind of pet site rather than a gacha game because, at least in the ones I've played, the pretty jpegs are useful for clearing game content or are a skin for other useful characters. The people that make up pet sites are also far more autistic about getting the "perfect pet" that has no real use outside of just being looked at, especially when the game gives ways of having exclusive tiers of value. The kind of individuals that buy into CS crap are the same kind of people that spend far too much time caring about the "lore" or "pedigree" of their pixel pets so they can show off and get thrown into fits of rage when anything happens that might take away perceived value of those pets.

Plus the jpegs are actually yours and there's not gonna be some sperg screeching that they blacklisted you and steal your character apparently to sell as if it's their own.

"Useful" would give the gameplay of gacha games too much credit for my taste, but I do agree with you that CS operate on a much higher level of autism. It looks like both schemes have the same three kinds of victims: The players, people who care about the gaming aspects of gacha games or actively role play in CS communities, the whales who get off by wasting money, and traders who get off on how little real money they spent on their horde of pixels.

Hell yeah, closed species thread! I was looking forward to this.
I know someone who has a Toyhou.se account, so if you have a name, just PM me it and I'll see if they can find anything.

Trying not to PL too much, but I actually had an incident with an artist who tried to stiff me money for a MYO contest I won - it was even mentioned in the original post they never thought to go and edit to make me look like a liar lol. Didn't pole vault well that year for the Mental Olympics.
The sad thing is I used to be a very good friend of hers and helped her make her rip-off species something totally different.

Guess who decided to go on a vendetta that ended with her begging them to stop because she was sewer waste and couldn't stop being waste to other people and those people started airing out their encounters with her?

That's the thing about these sorts of artists: they're so riddled with anxiety nonconfrontational that they'll let the internet tar and feather them for a stupid mistake or hell, get fucked over by others instead of standing up for themselves and saying, "The only reason you have friends is because they want their characters drawn by you for free, your personality is your art and fuck you for thinking you were special than anyone else."

These """creators""' should be fucking grateful that people will spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on their cut and paste pastel chimeras, but if they were humble then we wouldn't have Kiwifarms, would we?

GodDAMN I missed a whole rise and fall of power level in being gone for like a day.

Hey @Sangria is there any chance we could get a special 'no personal army / this is not the thread to dump on that one species with like ten members because you have beef with the owner' in the intro post? It's kind of the nature of the beast that a lot of the CS drama is going to involve a big risk of power level, and a reminder for people might head off a little of that- if it's not a drama happening on a big scale, its gonna get really obvious really quick.

Tsk, 8 pages in and no mention of Grems?
I don't have a lot of insight on it, but they're basically these chicken-legged furries with fat arms that have an exclusive rarity called 'cypherus' that people sperg out for, to the point where an auction for a custom one went up to 20.5k only for the end result to look like this

I was reading up on closed species and people's opinions on it, and someone commented "You're not only paying for the art/design/right to have one, you're also paying to be in such a wonderful community." Paying to get in a community full of people who fight over who has a better/rarer design and the design is something that literally anyone with creative juices can make. It's kinda sad tbh, I will never understand CS.

20,500$ for what looks like a shitty rushed sketched that's not even rendered. If I even dared to spend that sort of money on a dumb species I would expect there to be so much more than a colored sketch. This just tells me the artist who did this just doesn't care about the person paying or the quality of piece. Just the fact they scammed a moron for 20 grand.

Thanks, I needed to see some good old fashion nonsense after the powerlevel :)

If the PL deermeat did is any indicator, the farms might be in for more drama, whether its people white knighting their species or their purchase, or some really petty people who act like theyre not there to write a hitpiece on another glitterfox creator but totally are. How lucky, I guess? At least there will be plenty to talk about between threadbans.

If i wanted to pay money so i could get into a trashfire of a community, i would be giving drug money to Lowtax instead.

I'd love to add it to the thread, but it seems as though I've lost editing privileges to it. If a mod could please either do that for me or give me the ability back, then I'd appreciate it.

I don't think that design is horrendous; it has a nice color scheme, but it's a bit overdesigned and the chicken legs make it look odd. It's certainly not worth $20.5k though.

I wonder if this is a front for selling something else
