Saw that one gay jewish boomer youtuber who talks about classical music shit on this recording, no clue what's wrong with it. I guess Szell's style is something that you either like or don't. I for one quite like it. Just feels weird to call this one recording uniquely bad.

He mostly shits on sound engineering, and he has a point - it's very weak, especially for 1967. In fact all these famous Szell/Cleveland/CBS recordings sound a bit dull, especially when you compare to what Mercury, Decca or even East Germans were doing at the time. As for the interpretation... I think he finds it too "classicizing", which I generally don't mind in Mahler (on the contrary, I find what he calls "schmaltz" tacky and unnecessary), but that's just my opinion.

He loves martinu so he's alright in my book

Yeah, he's ok, in fact I often agree with his choices of recordings, as well as his scepticism of HIP. He really did dig up some gems which are barely mentioned by more "mainstream" reviewers, who are kind of stuck on DGG slop
He is fine when he is praising things, but whenever he criticizes something it is almost always done for the most retarded reasons and he never elaborates on anything. His videos are riddled with value judgements masquerading as real critique which is absolutely insufferable to watch.

His low-iq bashing of Furtwangler's 1942 recording is unforgivable. It is just repetitive nitpicking for the sake of being a contrarian and showing everybody how much he dislikes Nazism(so brave!). All while he completely ignores the actual reasons why it is loved buy way more musically educated and talented people than him while only focusing on minutia in isolated moments. We won't even mention the tone in which he presented it all. Made me mad. Just generally people consider him a bad critic.

Him calling Eduard Van Beinum's Mahler 4 better than Mengelberg's made my clitty leak. That's such a fucking gay thing to say, and it's pretty clearly motivated out of the fact that Mengelberg was pro-nazi.

I don't hate Van Beinum's recording and I quite like him as a conductor, but Mengelberg's interpretation is from someone who knew Mahler in real life and it's a lovely interpretation that is extremely fresh to my modern ear.
