"The Power of Love" is one of the folk songs Percy Grainger collected in Jutland. His informant told him the story behind this song (a maiden has a secret lover. Her seven brothers challenged the lover to a fight and are all killed. The girl declares that even should he kill her father, she would not think of leaving him), but unfortunately only remembered the last verse.


The lyrics of that only verse make little impact, but the music is a different matter. The words may speak of orchard and tree, but there is something watery about the music. The opening piano are like gentle waves that welcomes you at the sea, while the harmonium drones lazily murmur. Yet before long, the harmonium becomes dissonant and grows in vehemence; the harmonically unsettled strings pile on, like an irresistible force that drags you down. The piano hammers, as if to push your head underwater. The mood recalls, as Grainger himself wrote, "the doom-fraught undertow that lurks in all deep love." The song ends with a light piano arpeggio: however much the violence experienced by the drowned person has been, the sea has swallowed it all, all is calm except the slightest ripple.

What makes the brass sound like this sometimes? When I hear it I instantly recognize it as "Mid 20th century Hollywood brass"
It's the "old style" brass playing, generally louder and more expressive, here also captured with multiple close microphones. That style presisted in some East German or Russian orchestras until the 80s, particularly Staatskapelle Dresden and Staatskapelle Berlin, where it even kind of evolved into its own thing. This is why some people like the Jochum/Dresden Bruckner cycle, which I personally find slightly over the top.
In the West (and also in Poland and Czechia) since the '60s-'70s the brass started playing quieter but more precisely in tune, which sounds "nicer", but somewhat inexpressive, like a synthesiser.


Crazy how this work was mocked and belittled on it's first performance. I know the orchestra in question didn't like wagnerian-influenced music but how can you listen to this and not think it's even of a little value?
Bruckner trying to conduct for the first time was probably a factor here, the rest is just politics. This stupid Brahms vs Wagner war was just the earliest example of such conflicts. A few decades later basically all high art was consumed by this cliquish mentality, where the work itself becomes completely unimportant and instead the chattering classes only care if it's by "our guy" or "one of the bad ones". This basically corresponds with the end of wealthy aristocratic patrons having any influence and the emergence of mass "intelligentsia" and state-funded institutions.

By the way, what I always found more baffling was the reaction to Brahms' first Piano Concerto in Leipzig. Like, what exactly were they hating on? It's a very accessible piece, firmly in the tradition of Mozart's C-minor and D-minor concerti, and Beethoven 3rd. To add to confusion, it was apparently the conservatives that were the haters, and the New School liked it. Maybe it was a completely different version at the premiere? Cause you know, Brahms also reworked his pieces, he just had enough leverage to buy up the old manuscripts and destroy them.

Cortot's resemblance to Chopin is self-evident. And nooooooo, Jèws do NOT all look alike. Pnina would probably be Cortot's daughter. Martha Argerich looks like the lovechild of Pnina and Arthur Rubinstein. (Rubinstein also taught Pnina when she was a young girl...and also chased her around the piano trying to fuck her, according to what I heard directly from Inbar, who was told that by Pnina herself.) Inbar looks like the Zionist eugenics experiment hybrid of Argerich and Ehud Barak. Barak is one of only 3 or 4 celebrities Inbar has ever met, or so she said. Inbar's auntly 1st cousin is Esther Koren, a globalist lawyer. Esther Koren looks closely related to Barak's right hand man, who is also surnamed Koren. Inbar is the only person in the entire world who can artfully equal Martha's signature rapid perfection. For a reason. They even have the EXACT same lush, raven hair.
