The only big add-on I played was Death Wish. I really enjoyed the tight level design. Comparatively, I was a little bit disappointed with Cultic Ep.2 because the levels were huge and it was often hard to determine what to do next or where to look for the last item required for progression.

How are Cryptic Passage and Marrow? I like Blood a lot, but I know nothing about those.

Cryptic passage is just more classic blood, hard for the first 2 levels due to low ammo then a gradual ease in difficulty with random spots that are a hassle to get through due to annoying enemy abundance or placements.

Marrow can go from classic blood to atmospheric horror (similiar to cultic's mirrored house and haunted mansion in episode 2) to doom slaughter maps with some really trippy sections in between all that. It's 100% worth playing imo.

Cool. Maybe I'll give those a shot someday. It sucks that making whole, fully functional levels is probably a lot more difficult and time consuming as far as new, full 3D games are concerned. I'd imagine that making a level in Build is still a lot of work, but not that much compared to something made with UE5. I was never that much into a single game to make new content for it though, so I wouldn't know.

Highly recommend grabbing BuildLauncher and going from there. You can just... just download mods and run 'em easy as pie from a handy simple little application. If you didn't grow up in the early, dark days, you have no clue how painful it was getting mods to work properly.

What Lies Beneath is next level
Fate of the Damned is great
Marrow is very good
Death Wish is very good

I maintain that because Blood modding was/is so niche the quality is generally very high and with some extraordinary autism being employed to the best of their abilities.

If you're on a BuildEngine modding spree I'd recommend the following Duke 3d mods. They all belong to the Brutal Doom style of mods where they add lots of stuff to the original game and it's more its own set of games but I enjoyed them a lot.
  • Duke: Alien Armageddon is the closest of the bunch to the original duke but still goes wild with upgrade systems and revamped enemies and weapons and you can also play as Bombshell who has her own weaponset. Also adds two extra original campaigns, one's a normal build engine campaign but it's story focused and switches between bombshell and duke, and the other is an Unreal Tournament-like 2v2 gladiator arena affair with some hidden missions on the side.
  • Demon Throne another everything and the kitchen sink affair. Bit more fantasy based, you have the choice between Duke and some guy who looks like he belongs in Hexen. Lots of stuff in this one too.
  • The AMC TC the most ambitious of the three, for better and for worse. To give you a rough scale of how ambitious this thing is, it's been in development for more than a decade and it's still not complete. Duke is dead(not really) and the EDF has formed a new squad to make those alien bastards pay. You get the choice of (this may be a few years out of date) 7 characters, each with their own unique playstyles and weapons. One guy's a knight with mainly melee focused weapons. There's totally not-Caleb who's a gunslinger, a few voodoo/magic users and I forget what else. There's a weird x-com lite base management/research thing going on the side. You can apparently find spirits in secret areas in the levels and I vaguely remember your mission tablet spooking you by switching backgrounds to the exorcist girl when you're close to a spirit. It's overwhelmingly huge as far as total conversions go and I've been waiting on a full release for quite a while and haven't played it for what feels like 5 years in that wait.

I finished the game about a month ago. It's OK, but if you're an experienced FPS player like me, you should set the difficulty above normal. It's a cakewalk otherwise.

I like weapon wheels...

Especially that any weapon after the 5 key is both annoying to press and usually situational enough that you don't get used to it.

This might be heresy but I enjoyed it in the Quake remaster or enhance or whatever it was called. You hit Q, it slows down the action, you quickly select the desired weapon on the wheel and carry on without ever taking your left hand off WASD.

I found it less clunky than using the number keys.

Do PC gamer actually use the 1-9+0 keys?

I always rebind according to my preconceived pattern:

e - pistol
f - trajectory weapon
c - automatic weapon
x - hitscan long range weapon
q - rocket launcher
ALT - plasma weapon
TAB - shotgun
T - BFG class weapon
V - exotic weapon
WheelUp - melee action
WheelDown - melee weapon
Mouse4 - grenade type 1
Mouse5 - grenade type 2
Mouse3 - health related action

The number keys 1-5 are reserved for mines and items.

It reads like heresy.

Plus if you play Boomer Shooter you do it for nostalgia, and doing the mental math of whether to try to reach the number 7 or scroll until you get the weapon you want is peak nostalgia.

AMC Squad became hands down my absolute GOAT game for several years.

Have you played the most recent versions? Some retardation went down in the team and I had a very brief conversation with Mr. Stanfield which made me hesitant to trust him or the game again.

It would be nice to have confirmation from someone who's played new versions that it hasn't been turned into Stanfield's personal soapbox. I'd like to make another video on it again one day (I deleted my old hour and a half one because after the fact I had some problems with it).

Also Alien Armageddon is god-tier, that shit 'won' the roguelite genre for me for like a year straight with its War of Attrition mode. I haven't played it since Wesley Snipes was added as a playable character, I really need to make time for it again.

He had more energy and actually seemed to dig this.

This game really looks up my alley and I'll play it. To be It's like a Brutal Doom + Hexen. I'm fucking sold bros.

I want to play Cryptic Passage and Marrow. What's the most hassle free way of doing this? I replayed Blood + Last Wish a few years ago and I just can't remember what I used. I don't know anything about ports, frontends etc. for this game.

What I did was download One Unit Wole from GOG cough you can acquire it on gog-games.to and then use the files from that to launch nblood, which is what I'm currently using for my Death Wish 2.0 run.

I'll try that, cheers. I'm glad gog-games.to seems to be doing fine. It was briefly down a while back, if I recall.
