Ah I obviously don't have Refreshed so wasn't clear what he meant with Marrow. The fact that DW and Marrow are both releasing their new/updated editions as usual on ModDB makes this even less interesting.

And like he said, how fucking insane would you have to be to play this on a console? I appreciate the novelty of seeing a game from the mid-90s played on your 69" flatscreen but... why
somewhat related but DOS Blood was keyboard only by default, and even after tinkering it to make it WASD + Mouse, the mouse aiming still sucked ass, imagine trying to use TNTs with that shit, its why I never got to finish the game until Fresh Supply came out.

I got to about 80% of the way through the PS3 port of HL2 but gave up since it was so much more frustrating than on PC, and even baby mode modern FPSs like COD BO3 and BF4 were too much for me to be played on a controller, gyrosticks were never designed for precise aiming, what kind of masochistic freak still tries playing shooters on consoles in 2025?

I thought this guy was a corny YouTuber but now, thanks to this thread, I’m scrutinizing everything that comes out of his mouth, it’s exhausting. I was happier when I thought he sucked in a normal way.

Civvie is (was) at his best when covering a game he has a history with and has knowledge of. I still go back and watch his Pro series for the Build trinity and Doom for that reason. It's cozy when he's essentially doing a descriptive let's play without interjecting his personal shit into it. He has a good narrative cadence and reminds me of sitting around with a friend going on a rant about something he enjoys and has experience with. He holds a one-way conversation with the viewer that helps with the flow of the videos. Very verbose for what he does. Has a pretty nice taste in horror schlock and b-movies as well. He would be smart to just continue doing what he's good at and not interjecting personal opinions pertaining to shit outside of the subject matter. He makes good money through his Patreon alone to make videos on old/bad video games in a mental prison gag. I would imagine this is his primary source of income and he'd be an idiot to find a way to fuck it up.

There's a reason recharging health and aim assist became prevalent. Playing just about any old FPS (sans Doom) is a pain in the ass on controllers, ESPECIALLY Blood. Even with the game pulling shots towards targets with auto aim, you still end up dying a death by a thousand cuts by hitscanners with almost unfair reaction times. Duke3D also plays like shit on a controller.

Finally, I have an excuse to post this. [source: Alice In Borderland]

It's probably been asked many times, but is this really him? Or is he anonymous outside of his friend group like Mandalore, for instance?

TBF, recharging health has a good reason to encourage aggressive play. Else you need to be very careful with each encounter otherwise you become a dead man walking.

Are you talking just about SP? Health pickups were an important part of MP in games like Quake. It's a shame that Halo popularized health regen because it took away an aspect of map control. Remember the trickjump to get the megahealth in Q2DM1?

New Civvie video is out, he's doing a Christmas game. A janky 2002 Die Hard game that I didn't even know existed. Those industrial drywall areas are unmistakably Lithtech, it looks like a less-polished FEAR.

Have his videos gotten any better? I believe the last video I watched had something to do with Rise of the Triad… and there was some annoying forced musical hit that made me actually groan. I think all of his content started to take a nosedive when gay indie developers purposely put sewers in their games for the shout out, but especially when he was made as a character in Postal 4.

I really liked his older stuff. I think the TekWar video is great and I really like the Postal 2 stuff. One thing he has done a lot in recent videos is include death montages. Doing it once or twice for the gag is fine, but doing it for nearly every video makes it seem like you have no idea what you’re doing. It becomes a question of rather X or Y game is actually difficult or janky, or if you’re just bad at games.

The Stanley Parable had that moment where the narrator muttered."goddamn it, Ross,” and for me that’s the death of Game Grumps.

It's pretty hit-or-miss. Some videos definitely feel like they have more care and attention to detail to them. The quality of the video seems to directly correlate with how much he enjoys the game. The musical Enforcer bit was something he did for shits and giggles because RotT is probably up there with Blood for his favorite games. It also ended up in marketing material for RotT: Ludicrous Edition. As it should have, Civvie was a pretty big factor in exposing the game to people who either remember it as a relic from their past that they never got around to trying it, or newer generations who are looking to dip their toes into older games without any fiddling or compatibility issues. As someone who really appreciates the work that went into Ludicrous Edition, I'm glad Civvie was helpful in making it a successful business venture. It's probably the most feature-complete Nightdive "remaster", to contrast against their recent work with Outlaws, Blade Runner, and Blood:Refreshed Supply.

I'll also agree the game dev fellatio gets old, but it makes business sense to try and appease someone who could potentially give your game enough exposure to push significant sales. Nightdive and indie FPS devs pretty much owe their success to people like Civvie, Gman, Trav and LGR collectively, because it's hard to market obscure and ancient games to an audience without that outreach. I still find it kind of funny that despite Hakita putting Cancer Mouse in Ultrakill as a hidden boss, Civvie hasn't expressed any interest in making a video on it due to "skill issues".

Yeah, I check on him periodically when he pops up on my YT feed and it's mostly misses for a while. He chose to focus on a very niche segment of games (old school fps/jank/modern adjacent stuff). A lot of these games don't have much meat on them for an extended lets play commentary, in the Plinkett-esque edutainment style he settled on. So he often uses hacks like the sewer counter, death montage, glorifying and excusing middling FPS developers like Raven, or doing Randy Pitchford jokes any time he can to pad out a video.

It's and odd self-imposed limitation, he's clearly shown to be more talented than the vehicle he chose to be chained up to allows him to be.

I hope he does a re-review on his old sin video, although maybe he's waiting for the Nightdive remaster that will never come out to release first.

I just watched his Sin Episodes review. That game sure was an oddity. The first episode of a sequel to an old game made using the engine of Half-Life 2 and CS? I can't of another game like this. The "adaptive" difficulty really does make it a lot harder. Some of the later enemy spawns are just ridiculous, which makes them memorable. Somehow it's rewarding despite its unfairness. I would definitely plays more episodes, I don't even care if it's based on a 21-year old engine.

Yeah, it's a clever dumb shooter, lots of fun. The Source lighting looks bloody brilliant in it, I liked how levels were more contemporary than HL2. The enemy mercs had way more charm and personality than HL2 Combines, although they're essentially the same enemy but reskinned.

But playing with a mouse and keyboard is totally cheating, pimp! Wings of Redemption told me so (and is said masochist)

Also DH: Nakatomi plaza. Fuuuuck that game with a cactus. The Max Payne Die Hard TC from ancient times was better.
